Building on strong foundations
BIELD BUSINESS STRATEGY SUMMARY 2016-21
Looking forward with confidenceIn life, it always pays to plan ahead. To keep an eye on where you’re going and how you’re going to get there.
In the current environment, it’s more important than ever that we clearly set out what we hope to achieve in the next five years, and beyond.
At the heart of everything we do is our belief that older people should have the freedom to make their own choices and be free to live as independently as possible.
It’s a promise which, thanks to the experience, dedication and passion of our wonderful staff, we have delivered on since 1971.
Since then as a not for profit organisation and registered charity, we are one of the largest providers of housing and care for older people in Scotland. We now manage over 5,400 properties, providing a wide range of housing, care and support services across 23 local authority areas.
This new 5-year strategy keeps our focus firmly on our customers, on strengthening our foundations for both current and future customers, and on bringing together key outcomes which will ensure that we keep delivering on our promise.
Our core values have not changed in the last 40 years, the market we operate in most definitely has, and there are many different challenges now and in the future.
But we are fully committed to tackling these head on. And this Business Strategy reflects that commitment, with a comprehensive set of objectives and outcomes.
Looking forward, we are confident that our talented team will rise to the challenges we face over the next five years, and help take Bield through to its 50th anniversary.

Bield Business Strategy Summary 2016-21
Moving with the times The aim of this Strategy is to enable Bield to continue to improve the lives of Scotland’s older people for many years to come.
We can do this by continuing to grow as a financially stable, highly effective and innovative, customer-focused organisation.
The Strategy has been developed following extensive consultation with our stakeholders – our tenants, service users, staff and Board members.
Our new strategic objectives reflect the changing, challenging external environment in which we now operate. We have to take into account that in such a tough economic climate, there are a lot of factors outwith our control – which have a significant impact on how Bield will deliver services in the future.
This is a Business Strategy to secure Bield’s future, move us towards achieving our vision and place us in a strong position to celebrate our 50th year in 2021.
Our Business Strategy 2016-2021There are four main objectives to our Business Strategy, shown in our Strategy Wheel.
The core of our Strategy remains our customers. They are the reason we exist and the delivery of our four objectives, and their respective outcomes, will ensure we always put our service users first in all our decisions.
We believe the outcomes included
will ensure we continue to:
• Develop existing services
• Improve levels of customer service
• Maintain the financial strength of the organisation
• Develop the skills and abilities of our staff team, volunteers and Board members
• Help our residents to make their own choices and be free to live as independently as possible.
Strategy themes The four main objectives to our Strategy will allow us to build on our strong reputation and our many years of experience, and to respond to new challenges.
1. Homes and Services
Our properties are our customers’ homes, so they couldn’t be more important to us. Which is why we will continue to actively manage our housing, care and other services to ensure we provide better places to live. Better value for money. Better quality person-centered services.
2. Our People
We want our staff to truly love where they work and what they do. We want them to feel valued and feel that their contribution is fully appreciated. We will work at creating a culture that provides staff with more autonomy, more responsibility and the chance to progress.
3. Working Effectively
We will minimise bureaucracy, and simplify our processes to help us provide better value for money to our customers.
4. New Opportunities
We will develop new homes and services, and take advantage of new opportunities, through the creation of key strategic partnerships which will add value to what we do and help us grow in a sustainable and cost effective way.
