Bigger, Better Plans for Manufacturing Day 2015
H undreds of events are planned
for this year’s edition of Manu-
facturing Day as supporters
continue efforts to improve the public
image of manufacturing. At the end
of July, the number of planned events
nationwide already exceeded 330,
according to the event’s web site,
www.mfgday.com.
While Manufacturing Day is officially slated for Friday,
Oct. 2, many organizations will hold #MFGday15 events
throughout the month. Companies host students, teachers,
parents and others at open
houses to demonstrate
manufacturing technology
and discuss careers in
manufacturing.
“Manufacturing Day has had rapid acceptance by manu-
facturers of all sizes and industry sectors,” said Ed Youdell,
president and CEO of the Fabricators & Manufacturers As-
sociation, International (FMA), one of the co-producer groups
providing support for Manufacturing Day.
The co-producers are confident
that the tally of events this year will
exceed 2250, Youdell said. There
were 1679 registered Manufacturing
Day events in 2014.
“We are confident that this grass-
roots movement is reaching deeper
into the education community, which
is critical for the industry’s future,”
said Jennifer McNelly, president of the Manufacturing Institute,
another one of the co-producing groups. “One of the most im-
portant things Manufacturing Day can do is to introduce edu-
cators and America’s youth to
manufacturing and the career
opportunities it provides.”
SME, the SME Education
Foundation and Tooling U-SME are proud to be gold sponsors
of Manufacturing Day. Throughout October, SME will support
the event through its chapter activities and events, the Founda-
tion’s PRIME school network and Tooling U-SME. SME will also
host a 5K run near its headquarters in Dearborn, MI. Visit sme.
org/mfgday for more information.
Organizers are looking to exceed 2250 Manufacturing Day events in 2015.
New Institute to Focus on Photonics
A sixth public-private manufacturing
institute will begin operations with
more than $610 million in funding. The
Manufacturing Innovation Institute for
Integrated Photonics will be based in
Rochester, NY, the White House said in
late July.
Photonics is the use of light to
transmit information. The Research
Foundation for the State University of
New York will be the lead organization of
the new institute. The photonics group
will receive $110 million in federal funds,

with more than $500 million from other sources, including
universities and companies.
The manufacturing institutes are part of the National
Network for Manufacturing Innovation, or NNMI, an initiative
of the Obama administration. NNMI is intended to spur ap-
plied research developments and workforce development in
manufacturing. The photonics institute is a consortium of 124
companies, non-profit groups and universities.
The manufacturing institutes are designed to bring
companies and academic organizations together to develop
new manufacturing technologies and processes faster. Other
institutes concentrate on areas such as 3D printing and
lightweight materials.
The photonics institute will be supervised by the US De-
fense Department. According to a White House statement,
Rochester was selected to be the home base of the photon-
ics group because the area has companies already develop-
ing related technology.
Nine institutes have so far been authorized. The Obama
administration wants funding to increase the NNMI to 16
institutes by the end of 2016. The administration’s goal is for
45 of the institutes to be established over a decade.

US Auto Sales Cruise Toward Record Year
US sales of light vehicles could reach an all-time high in
2015, based on the industry’s performance through the
first seven months of the year.
Total light vehicle sales increased 4.5% through July to 10
million units, according to Autodata Corp. Light truck sales
gained 10.7% to 5.4 million during that period. Car sales
declined 1.9% to 4.6 million.
The seasonally adjusted annual rate, or SAAR, which ad-
justs for seasonal factors, averaged 17 million through July,
with the SAAR that month reaching 17.55 million units.
Most analysts have forecasted the industry closing the

year with 17-17.2 million in unit sales, which would put it
somewhere in the top five years of auto sales.
The industry’s best year of auto sales was set in 2000,
with 17.4 million cars and trucks sold., followed by:
• 2001—17.17 million vehicles sold
• 2005—16.99 million vehicles sold
• 1999—16.96 million vehicles sold
• 2004—16.91 million vehicle sold
The increase in sales is being driven
by low gas prices, relatively low unem-
ployment and new models.
Manufacturing Research Conference Creates Buzz, Draws Crowd
About 500 manufacturing students,
researchers and other profession-
als from around the world visited the
University of North Carolina Charlotte
from June 8 to 12 to discuss the latest
in international manufacturing re-
search and celebrate the cutting-edge
work underway in the technology of
making things.
They were there to attend two co-
located events, the 43rd SME North
American Manufacturing Research
Conference (NAMRC) sponsored by
NAMRI/SME, and the ASME Manu-
facturing Science and Engineering
Conference (MSEC) sponsored by their
Manufacturing Engineering Division.
The collective event is regarded as the
premier international forum for applied
research and industrial applications in
manufacturing and design.
In all, 120 papers were presented
during NAMRC sessions of the confer-
ence, with eight fast-tracked to SME’s
Journal of Manufacturing Systems and
12 fast-tracked to SME’s Journal of
Manufacturing Processes.
During the event, the North Ameri-
can Manufacturing Research Institution
of SME installed its new board, which
will remain in place through the close
of NAMRC 44. That event will be held
from June 27 to July 1, 2016, hosted
by Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, VA.

Johnson Controls to Spin Off Automotive Unit
Longtime automotive supplier John-
son Controls Inc. plans to spin off
its automotive unit, which accounts for
more than half of its revenue.
The auto unit will become a sepa-
rate, publicly traded company. Johnson
Controls disclosed the decision July 24
when it reported earnings for its fiscal
third quarter. Johnson Controls said it
expects to complete the separation in
12 months.
Bruce McDonald, vice chairman and
executive vice president of Johnson
Controls, will become chairman and
CEO of the new company, according
to a statement. Johnson Controls said
on June 10 it was exploring “strategic
options” for separating the auto unit,
which makes auto seating and interiors.
The unit generated $22 billion of the company’s $42.8 billion in
revenue for the fiscal year ending Sept. 30, 2014.

ing efficiency and power solutions businesses. The latter

efficiency unit produces heating and air conditioning sys-
tems as well as systems for management and security of
buildings. Exiting the auto seating and interiors business will
“drive more profitable growth,” Johnson Controls CEO Alex
Molinaroli said in June.
