A+ Scholarship Program
What is the A+ Program? The A+ program provides scholarship funds to eligible graduates of A+ designated high schools who attend a participating public community college or vocational/technical school, or certain private two-year vocational/technical schools. How do I apply? If you would like to apply for the A+ program, contact Shauna Farmer or Kathy Ungles. You will be required to fill out these pa-pers: the mentoring and tutoring compliance form and the student agreement form. How do I know if I am eligible? In order to maintain your A+ eligibility, you must meet the fol-lowing requirements: • Attend an A+ school for three consecutive years prior to
graduation.• Graduate with an unweighted overall GPA of 2.5 or greater
on a 4 point scale.• Graduate with an overall attendance rate of at least 95 percent
for grades 9-12.• Perform 50 hours district supervised, unpaid tutoring or
mentoring.• Maintain a record of good citizenship and avoid the use of
alcohol and unlawful drugs.• Apply for non-payback scholarships by completing a FAFSA
(Free Application for Free Student Aid). When can I get my hours in?The guidelines for participating in mentoring/tutoring activities with the Rock Port R-II School District are as follows:• Eligible students may participate in mentoring/tutoring only
during their assigned A+ Cadet Teaching period. Students who have no assigned Cadet Teaching Class may accumulate tutoring credit before or after regular school hours, and dur-ing classes at the discretion of the instructor of that class and the A+ Coordinator.
• Tutoring participants are to consider themselves as guests of their assigned activity and are to conduct themselves in ac-cordance with all rules, regulations, and guidelines found in the student handbook and in accordance with the supervisor in charge.
• All established “Mentoring and Tutoring Guidelines” are to be followed in completing a tutoring assignment at Rock Port R-II Elementary and High School activities.
Questions regarding tutoring, mentoring, tuition reimbursement,

Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar ChildrenA Book Review by Chloe Sierks
Congratulations to senior Ty Jones for playing 14th at State Cross Country. Ty ran on Saturday, November 7, and finished with a time of 17:40.8. He is among the few boys from Rock Port who have received a medal at State Cross Coun-try. We’re proud of you, Ty! Pictured above is Jones with cross country coach, Chris Gebhards. Elementary BasketballLittle Jays basketball is, once again, underway. Each year, students in grades K-3 look forward to this season where they can experience friendly competition and have fun with their peers. This year, there are 8 teams that are coached by high school basketball players. The elemen-tary students play on Saturday mornings in November in the high school gym. By Chloe Sierks

Over the years, I have fre-quently heard the quote, “Don’t judge a book by its cover.” Using it literally, the quote ad-vises readers to not choose or dismiss a book solely based on the appearance of its cover. Seems self-explanatory, right? As much as I would like to say I don’t base my book selection on the covers, I do. The cover is what pulls me in or, on the other hand, what makes me put the book back on the shelf.
I had seen the book “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children” for quite some time, but I noticed that the cover had an oddity about it and I was dissuaded me from reading it. Written by Ransom Riggs, this novel takes you through a young boy’s journey at discov-ering himself and uncovering the peculiar life of his grandfa-ther.
After the mysterious pass-ing of his grandfather, Jacob is burdened with solving the death and deciphering the child-
hood stories told to him by his grandfather. These bizarre tales of levitating girls and invisible boys keep Jacob up at night. Finally he receives a letter that propels him to an island where encounters his grandfather’s childhood firsthand. Jacob finds himself in a life-threatening situation where he is forced to make a decision that could fol-low him for the rest of his life.
This haunting and out-of-the-ordinary trilogy captivates its readers from the first chapter. All three books provide chill-ing images that intensify the plot and bring the stories to life. The photos were discovered by Riggs himself and helped to in-spire all three novels.
“Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children” received countless positive reviews and was given four out of five stars on goodreads.com. I would highly recommend this book to those readers who love a good adventure story with an eerie twist.
