In tight fiscal times, resource allocation is frequently a challengefor districts and states. Human capital resources can be stretchedas schools try to meet state requirements for teacherqualifications and class sizes. At the same time, fiscal constraintscan also present opportunities to reimagine new ways of humancapital allocation.
Please join the Center for American Progress for a conversationwith experts in research, policy, and practice to discussopportunities and constraints in taking innovative approaches to
school staffing. We will launch the conversation with two papers:one by Matthew Chingos that reviews the evidence on class sizereduction policies; and one by Julie Kowal and Dana Brinson thatanalyzes innovative staffing models used at RocketshipEducation, a national nonprofit elementary charter network, andFairfax County Public Schools in Virginia. We will continue andexpand on the discussion with a panel of distinguished policy andresearch experts.

A year ago, the W.K. Kellogg Foundation announced its "America Healing" initiative, a five-year, $75 million program ofgrants focusing on bringing healing to divided communities and bridging racial gaps in the areas of education, health, juvenile justice, economic s uccess, the media, and other areas.
Writing in NCRPs Responsive Philanthropy , Dr. Gail Christopher, Kelloggs vice president for program strategy, notedthat the initiative reflects a belief that our racialized social and opportunity structures have g enerated and continue togenerate two consistent outcomes: privilege for some, and obstacles, pain and suffering for others. Acknowledging thisfact, however painful, is the beginning of the healing process. In mandating that the W.K. Kellogg Foundatio n become
an effective anti- racist organization, she wrote, the foundations board of trustees acknowledged both the implicitbenefits of white privilege and the foundations obligation to be responsive to the needs produced by centuries of structural rac ism.
Kelloggs announcement was viewed skeptically by Stephan Thernstrom, Winthrop Research Professor of History atHarvard University. Writing for the Wall Street Journal , he asked What evidence convinced Kellogg that racism is such aclear-and-present danger to the children of America today? Foundation officials point to racial and ethnic disparities. . . .But is it self- evident that these economic and educational differences are simply or even largely the consequences of racism?
Join us for a d iscussion of the America Healing initiative and its intellectual underpinnings, featuring Sterling Speirn,President and CEO of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation; Kellogg Vice President Dr. Gail Christopher; Harvard ProfessorStephan Thernstrom; and Ron Christie, political strategist and author of Acting White: The Curious History of a Racial Slur . Bradley Center Director William Schambra will moderate the discussion.

Howard University graduateand D.C. Public Schools worker
The Washington Post has reported that recent
census statistics show the Black population inthe place once affectionately known as theChocolate City has dropped by more than 39,000over the last decade, going from 70 percent of residents to less than 50 in the last few decades.
Public schools and social services are underattack. Housing and rent prices have soared, making city living almost impossible forworking-class families, laying bare the lines of income, class and race.
At the same time, working-class people face constant threats to our jobs, homes and livelihoods, while the police set up racist checkpoints in our neighborhoods and gun down our youth in thestreet, driving us from our homes.
Join us for a discussion, including:
Why the D.C. government relentlessly pursues gentrification at the expense of District workers
How gentrification is changing the face of Washington Why do those who claim to represent us continue to attack us while pandering to the rich?
and
Tax the Rich!
Congress has again extended tax cuts to the most wealthy while workers are fighting for our jobs, homes and basic needs. When polled, 61 percent of respondents have stated that the solution tothe budget crisis is to tax the rich.
Working people get it ... why wont the government do it?

artist talk starts promptly at 3:00 p.m.
In Interconnected , Stan Squirewell explores conditions revolving around the empoweredand the powerless: institutions and identity, categories as boundaries, and assimilationvs. transformation. The very sharpness of digital media amplifies his confrontationalimagery. Traditionally trained, the artist adopted digital media because its immediate, cathartic process "keeps up with my thoughts," and echoes the frenzy of contemporaryculture.

Drawing on scholarship and his Center's experience in supporting pro-democracy activists in Egypt and aroundthe world, Peter Ackerman will describe factors such as strategy and careful planning that are common tosuccessful civil resistance movements. Investing in agricultural development has long been recognized as one of the best ways to reduce povertyin the long term, whether the goal is to feed individual families or to help economies grow. In addition, research has shown that women in developing countries carry out much of the work with agricultural cropsand production. Women are also more likely to use income from these activities for food, healthcare andeducation for their children, helping lift entire communities out of poverty and achieve sustainableeconomic growth.
This panel will focus on successful value chain strategies, particularly those involving women, to boostincome and achieve food security. Specific interventions, success stories and private sector alliances willbe discussed in the context of capacity building, access to markets, quality standards and post-harvesthandling.

Art Gallery & Interior Design
Our first exhibit in our new space, Hidden Images , presents abstract artwork rich in variousinterpretations. Local artists challenge viewers to find unseen symbols, storylines, images, andmeanings within their work. The exhibit runs from Monday, April 4, 2011 to Saturday, May 7, 2011.
Opening Reception Saturday, April 23, 5:00-8:00 p.m.
HYATTSVILLE, MD (04-11-11) -When we moved into our space located withinthe Lustine Center, many passer-bys thought our gallery had closed. However, things are not always what they seem. Our new space is part of anexciting gallery collaboration where we will host and co-host exhibitsalongside of artdc. Our first exhibit, Hidden Images , invites viewers to take asecond glance, peel away layers: both optical and metaphorical, and ask the question: What do you really see and why?
In any form of art, each individual has the potential to see somethingdifferent. Art's power is in its ability to affect the soul, to summon memory, topromote dialogue, and communicate visually what cannot be described inany other way. Art has the ability to manipulate, to control, and to transform.
Often the desire to see a single concept, a single identifiable subject, a single answer is an initial response toart. With Hidden images we invite viewers to closely examine each work and find multiple meanings. Workswithin this exhibit will require and motivate viewers to take a more concentrated and in-depth look at eachpiece. The artwork is meant to communicate a deeper meaning than what is initially interpreted. HiddenImages contains abstract work with dual-meaning which is illustrated via optical illusion, satire, layering, etc.truly indulging the viewer's imagination.
Selected works for Hidden Images were juried by Justin Fair, Abigail Hunt, and Erica Riggio.
