Panama scores victory over Turks & Caicos
SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador, May 19, 2012.- Panama scored their first victory at the NORCECA First Round 2014 Men´s World Championship Qualification Tournament Group G taking place in Gymnasium Adolfo Pineda at El Salvador, winning over Turks & Caicos 3-0 (25-8, 25-6, 25-15). Panama took control over Turks & Caicos right from the start; their stronger and more experienced volleyball earned them the win. Panama faces host El Salvador
on Sunday in the closing match of the tournament. Top scorers for Panama were Jose Cunningham with 12 points and Domingo Avila with 10. For Turks & Caicos, James Cuero topped with 12 points. “Glad with today’s win even though it was difficult to come back from yesterday’s loss, but we have to turn the page. During today’s practice we prepared for any eventuality, that’s why everyone had a chance to play today. We must be focused in tomorrow’s match against the home team” said Ricardo Brown, Panama´s captain. Verwyn Jervis, captain for Turks & Caicos expressed “we were less distracted, we had a good third set as we showed a bit improvement.” Head Coach for Panama, Marco Perez, said “we worked on yesterday’s faults against Honduras looking to win today in 3 sets using different combinations thinking about tomorrow’s match”, he urged Turks & Caicos to compete more because it’s the only way to see results and he congratulate them. “I’m excited because the team had better blocking and hits, our defense was more effective; we’re looking ahead positively” words of CJ Edross, Turks & Caicos Coach.
Honduras remains undefeated
SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador, May 19, 2012. - Honduras beat El Salvador in a thriller five setter by 21-25, 31-33, 25-18, 25-14 and 15-9 at the NORCECA First Round 2014 Men´s World Championship Qualification Tournament Group G and remains undefeated. This was the best match so far of the Qualifier showing offensive and blocking skills from the winners who came from behind and virtually became the winners of the tournament. A spectacular recovery from
El Salvador in the second set from 4-11 under to tie it at 20 wasn’t enough to seal the deal. Luis Salgado the best scorer for Honduras with 31 points, Wilfredo Lopez contributed with 14 and Carlos Osorio with 13. Honduras finished with a 16-11 advantage in blocks. For El Salvador, Rodrigo Chavez scored 21 and Carlos Leiva 16. Still excited and with tears in his eyes, captain Luis Membreño of Honduras said “after losing the first two sets I believed we had it lost, but with God’s will and always keeping our hopes high we knew how to recover”. “We were defeated because of our lack of attention and determination, even if we came from behind in the first and second sets. I congratulate Honduras for their great coordination” said Leonel Hernandez, captain of El Salvador. Prof. Rony Martinez of Honduras indicated “I don´t agree with Luis, I never saw the match lost, I had confidence in my team. I knew it wasn´t going to be easy because El Salvador has been doing a serious job in their preparation, but our blocking made the difference”. Cuban coach Juan Andres Leon for El Salvador congratulated the winners and said “we took advantage in the beginning as Honduras state of mind began to diminish, but in the end they have skilled players and a better physical condition which was why I had to win 3-0 and not extend the match as it happened”.
