A FOOR BREAKFAST

Very Few People Ent a Good BreakfUKt

All I want for breakfast Is a roll andof coffee

This remark is heard not only in hotelsrestaurants and lunchrooms but it is theusual breakfast order In the home ircleas well After a twelvehours fast itwould seem that the first meal of the dayshould be a hearty substantial one and Ifwe all lived natural unartlflcial lives itwould so but none of us do hencebreakfast is a mere pretence

Says a latter day philosopher Duringmany years of active business life I neverremember having eaten a good substantialbreakfast but supposed it was of no Im-portance until I began to lose appetite forlunch and dinner

My physician told me I vas a victim ofnervous dyspepsia and must take rest andrecreation as no medicine would reachthe trouble but this advice I could notfollow as my business affairs would notpermit it and to get relief I resorted tomedicines and prescriptions and it waspurely accidental that I hit upon one rem-edy which did the business While In adrug store one evening I noticed a number of people buying Stuarts DyspepsiaTablets a widely advertised preparationtor stomach troubles and the force of ex-ample was too much for me and I boughta fiftycent package

I took a tablet or two after each mealand in a week my appetite picked up Ibegan to feel my old ambition for work re-turning and could eat a good breakfastbecause wanted it and from that time tothis I take Stuarts Dyspepsia Tablets asregularly as I take my meals not becauseI now have any trouble with my stomachbut because I dont want to have

A fiftycent box of Stuarts Tablets witlast me a month and keep my digestion ingood order and I know of no better investment a business man can make

PERFECT

Used by people of refinement-for over a quarter of a century

Smith he went from Moyamcnsing prison-to Joffees store on North Third Streetnear GIrard Avenue and there identified-a number of gold bracelets rings watches and cuff buttons which he says he soldto Joffee for a paltry sum of money Thearticles were claimed by Clara Fairfieldof 1009 South Fortysixth Street Melvillesaid he robbed her house of 200 worth ofJewelry

The prisoner has rendered the detec-tives every assistance possible in recov-ering the stolen property and nearly allof it has now been found and identifiedby the owners Melville Is sixty yearsold and has served twenty years in prison

Melville said Superintendent Quirkis in my mind the most adroit board-

ing house thief ever captured by the Phil-adelphia police The man operated here-for two months and despite the most

j thorough work on the part of the detectires he eludtd us and It was more by

j good luck than anything else that wefinally arrested him

The mans method of robbing a housewas an ingenious one There is nothingabout his appearance that would lead oneto suspect him of being a thief The police say he always dresses fashionably andwould readily pass for a welltodo business man

In planning his robberies according tohis story he consults the lists of boardinghouses as published In the newspapersHaving selected a house to rob he wouldpresent himself to the mistress and engage a suite of rooms saying his wife andtwo daughters would Join him on the fol-lowing day He would make It o pointto request a private table in the diningroom for his family and would then tellthe landlady that ho wished to write afew letters and when she went downstairs-he would ransack the upper rooms andthen leave the house

Despite the fact that complaints weremade at police headquarters and descriptions of the stolen property were sent outalmost every day to Jewelers and pawn-brokers none of the plunder was recov-ered until Melville was arrested Two arrests have already been made of Jewelrydealers who are charged with having re-ceived some of the plunder and other ar-rests are likely to follow

It is believed that Melville has been operating in other cities The prisonerspicture has been sent to the police of Bal-timore and Washington whore many

robberies have committed re-cently The police argue that he couldnot possibly live in the manner he did onthe small sum he received from the plunder he disposed of here

Joffee refused to make any statementregarding his alleged dealings with theprisoner and was held In 600 bail for trialby Magistrate Cunningham

Expresses His Views ConcerningBeforetlieCurtain Speeches

Insist That an Actor Step Out ofCharacter to Express Thanks

for nn

The refusal of W H Crane the comedian who is presenting a dramatized ver-sion of David Harum at the NationalTheatre this week to accept a call for abeforethecurtain speech between thesecond and third acts of his play has oc-casioned not a little comment favorableand otherwise Local theatre assemblageshave become so accustomed to havingtheir favorite players step out of their assumed characters for brief oratorical efforts that Mr Cranes deviation from theusual course of his contemporaries comesto the majority of theatre patrons as muchof a wholly commendable innovation

Mr Crane shares with Mr RichardMansfield the belief that it is Inartistic toindulge in the superfluous curtainspeeches and each provides a substitutewho thanks the audiences for their approv-al of the work of the actors and their as-sociates

On last Monday night when Mr Cranefirst showed his admirable character crea-tion of the Homeville bankerhorse traderat the National the audience applaudedwith a vigor and persistency that werequite remarkable and seemingly could onlybe satisfied by the appearance of the chief

i actor before the curtain and the customa-ry address of thanks for the appreciation-of the efforts of himself and the othersconcerned in the performance But in-stead of the comedian Mr Devere thestage manager stepped in front of thecurtain and explained that Mr Crane didnot approve of the Idea of comingout of the character of David Harum during the action of the piece Hethen proceeded to thank the audience onbehalf of Mr Crane for their cordial re-ception of the production Mr Crane

j his present local engagement hassteadfastly refused to favor his patronswith a speech between any of the actsalthough doubtless if one had been re-quested of him at the conclusion of theplay he would have been only too happyto personally address his admirers-

In discussing the matter of beforethecurtain speeches In his dressing room atthe theatre last night Mr Crane said toa Times representative

Almost every critic who has seenDavid Harum has said that as a play

pure and simple it is slight In structurea mere series of character sketches morethan anything else and yet they havetaken me to task in some instances

i I have refused to come before thecurtain in response to the demands of

the audience for a speech there Isno man in my profession who appreciatesany more than I do the applause andcommendation of my audiences and Ialso realize that It means a great deal toany player to occupy a position in theaffections of the theatregoers that makespossible the demand for a iew words between any of the acts Li David Harummy sole capital Is my characterisationand my makeup I have never tudiedany part In which 1 have previously

with the thoroughness that I haveHarum I have followed the descriptionof Mr Westcott the author as given onpage 119 of the book most minutely Ihave reproduced the famous wart on theside of the nose the diamond In the shirtfront even the red tie you will find inevidence I make no claim that DavidHarum is a great dramatic compositionnothing of the sort but it is a very enjoyable least the peo-ple who come to see it say Iwould most assuredly be sacrificing all ofmy capital to step out of the characterand for a few disillusionizethe people on the other side of the footlights by showing them some one elsethan the character they have been Interested In during the performance If anaudience would but reaize what a dis-tinct loss it would mean and bear in mindthat I could not get back Into the at-mosphere of the piece and personality ofthe character once more were I Id allowmyself to step out of It they would notthink of calling for speech let alonecriticise me for refusing to grant theirseemingly reasonable request-

I dont know of anything more ridicu-lous to the average theatre patron than towitness an actor who has Just beenthrough the throes of a stage death comebefore the curtain a moment later and tellhis audience how delighted he Is that theyseem to take kindly to the idea of thetemporary supremacy of the villain It isnot only ridiculous it is inconsistent anddecidedly inartistic sad yet some of ourvery best actors will persist In the absurdpractice-

I realize that In a comic opera bur-lesque comedy or some of the lighterforms of stage entertainment It Is part ofthe performance and I suppose that ifsome of our comic opera comedians failedto tell how much pleased they vere withthe enthusiastic demonstration on the partof the ushers and other attaches of thetheatre the major portion of the audiencewould feel as if they were not receivingthe worth of their money But I mustfirmly decline to come out of my DavidHarum getup and display the real W HCrane Understand I mean between anyof the acts Were the same volume of applause to be accorded me at the end ofthe piece or the audience to evidence thesame feverish desire to have me open theflood gates of my eloquence when I couldremove the bald wig of Harum I shouldbe most delighted to accommodate themThis compliment was pad me on severaloccasions in New York State earlier thisyear and I was only too glad to thank myauditors for their appreciation of the merits of the performance without any loss toeither myself or them-

I want to repeat that after working forthirtyeight years for the honor no actorunderstands or appreciates better than I dowhat it means to occupy a place In theheart of the public to the extent that Ismanifested when it applauds ones effortsto please and asks to be favored Just-a few words outside of the play If peo-

ple would only bear In mind that It is nofarther from Washington to Baltimorethan It Is from Baltimore to Washington-and that If I detained them five minutes-at the end of tho play they would not be

d to remain in the theatre anylonger than If I had occupied the samespace of time between the second and thirdacts this beforethecurlaln speech busi-ness would be a very simple propositionand might be easily solved to the entiresatisfaction of everyone concerned
