Brothers,
As we begin a new fraternal year, I would like to thank those members whose efforts were vital in
making this past year a success for our Council. The involvement by these Brother Knights in completing
the various fundraising projects made it possible for our Council to fund many worthwhile and deserving
charities, support our seminarians as well as our community at large. No less important were those
activities and projects that were carried out not as fundraising but as building on our support for our
community, such as our annual Basketball Free Throw event and our Adopt-a-Road highway clean up just
to name two. Built into these events is the camaraderie shared by our members as well as our community.
A good example of this is our annual Shrove Tuesday pancake supper where all involved feel a sense of
accomplishment shared by all. We can look forward to repeating these annual fun filled events this
coming year. One area that needs improvement on our part is attendance at both our general and executive
meetings. All members’ opinions are important and need to be heard at the general meeting. Please make
a greater effort to attend as you are needed by your Council. Recently there have been two executive
meetings where we did not have the required eight executive members necessary to conduct business.
When this happens, the meeting is essentially cancelled and the business that needs to be completed has to
be put off until the next month. Without this necessary quorum of 8 executive members, we cannot pass
motions, plan for events or generally make progress. In short, this hampers our efforts to be successful. Of
course, we all have things come up and may not be able to attend every single meeting. When this
happens, an executive member is expected to let the Grand Knight know that they need to be excused
from that meeting. A phone call, text or email is all that is required. Being absent without notice from an
executive meeting is disrespectful to your Council and to those who made the effort to attend the meeting,
only to be told it has to be cancelled. If you feel this requirement is too much to ask of you, please
reconsider accepting an executive position. On the brighter side, we have a new slate of executive
members who I am sure are eager to continue the good work we do. Your new executive for the
upcoming year:
Chaplain Fr. Gerard Pilon Grand Knight Mike Sangregorio
Deputy Grand Knight Mike Phillips Chancellor Jason DeHetre
Recorder Domenic Sanfilippo Advocate Lorne Winkler
Financial Secretary Michael Dynes Sr. Treasurer Harry Cogill
Warden Angelo Vivona Inside Guard Rudy Bulfon
Outside Guard Joe Gerynowicz Third Guard Mike Farley
Trustees Gene Cudney Sal Greco Adam Monid Lecturer – Jim Groves
Let us all look forward to another good year for our Council and our community made possible by all our
efforts.
Fraternally, Mike Sangregorio GK
Saint of the Month
St. Thomas the Apostle Feast Day July 3
Poor Thomas! He made one remark and has been branded as “Doubting Thomas” ever since. But if he
doubted, he also believed. He made an explicit statement of faith in the New Testament: “My Lord and
My God!” and, in so expressing his faith, gave Christians a prayer that will be said till the end of time. He
also occasioned a compliment from Jesus to all later Christians: “Have you come to believe because you
have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed” (John 20:29).
Thomas should be equally well-known for his courage when he expressed his willingness to die with
Jesus. The occasion was when Jesus proposed to go to Bethany after Lazarus had died. Since Bethany
was near Jerusalem, this meant walking into the very midst of his enemies and to almost certain death.
Realizing this, Thomas said to the other apostles, “Let us also go to die with him” (John 11:16b).
Traditionally, he is said to have travelled outside the Roman Empire to preach the Gospel, travelling as
far as India in AD 50. There he baptized several families, founding what today are known as Saint
Thomas Christians. According to Syrian Christian tradition, Saint Thomas was allegedly killed at St.
Thomas Mount, in Southern India in 72 A.D. and his body was interred there in Mylapore. This is the
earliest known record of his martyrdom. In 232 AD, the greater portion of relics of the Apostle Thomas
are said to have been sent by an Indian king and brought from Mylapore to the city of Edessa,
Mesopotamia. After a short stay on the Greek island of Chios, on 6 September 1258, the relics were
transported, via three ships to Ortona , Italy and now rest in the Cathedral of St. Thomas the Apostle
in Ortona, Italy.
The relics resisted both the Saracen looting of 1566, that the destruction of the Nazis in the famous battle
of Ortona, fought in late December 1943.
Thomas shares the lot of Peter —indeed all the apostles in their weakness and lack of understanding. We
must not exaggerate these facts, however, for Christ did not pick worthless men. But their human
weakness again points up the fact that holiness is a gift of God, not a human creation; it is given to
ordinary men and women with weaknesses; it is God who gradually transforms the weaknesses into the
image of Christ, the courageous, trusting, and loving one.

Summer greetings to you and your family. The summer brings joy and memorable family BBQs.
With our executive in place we will begin a new fraternal year. If I could ask a question? As a member
what does your Knights of Columbus Council mean to you?
For me: it brings fellowship with members, it brings me closer to my Church and it brings an opportunity
to serve our members, Priest, parishioners and our community. It also brings self-satisfaction that I am
giving back to others, but most of all to those that need help. It brings a challenge to do more as did our
past members that made Father Lally Council 5793 great. The results of my activity; I feel I am a better
person and sometimes think before my quick tongue kicks into gear. Ha, Ha, I said it first. To complete
this I will end with what I started the question:
As a member what does your Knights of Columbus Council mean to you?
Our Treasure Brother Harry Cogill and myself will present the budget for 2018- 2019 fraternal
year to the membership as a notice of motion at our July General Meeting, Come out and have your input
heard. Please note when approved by the membership it is a goal not written in stone.
The end of our financial fraternal year is fast approaching and we will start preparing with our
semi- annual audit. This is under the control of our Grand Knight and Trustees. Your Treasurer and your
Financial Secretary will present all necessary material for the completion of this task.
Please come and join us at one of our General meetings the 1st Tuesday of each month. Your
input is a necessary part of our future.
Read our Take 5 Newsletter and please share your thoughts these are mine.
Respectfully
Michael Dynes FS
