It is a non-ending materialhas a low energy contentcan isnsulate well (heat and noise)has a reasonable thermal masscan give a healthy buildingIs in dry form very stableprovides storage of large amounts of CO2 is good recyclable / compostable
There are few materials that score better on all these points.
Why build with straw?
Why build with straw?
Primary energie needed and CO2 produced per m2 insulation materials
Why build with straw?
Primary energie needed and CO2 produced per house
History2 more reasons to build with straw:
- The bale-press was invented in Amerika around 1893
- In Nebraska was, due to poor supply, in 1900 a lack of construction materials.
HistoryAround 1900 arose in the area of Nebraska the first straw bale buildings.
And some of these still exists…

STRAW & STRAW
- 48x36cm, length: 60-110cm (small bale)
- 90-110 kg/m3
- RH: <15%
- Weed: <0,5 % (mass)
- Residual weat: <0,4 % (mass)
- Conductivity (on edge): 0,04 – 0,05 W/mK - Conductivity (flat): 0,07 - 0,08 W/mK
- Fire rating: B2
- Fire protection: F-30 tot F-90
- Biological degradation: classe 2-3
STRAW & STRAWThermal conductivity is determined by the main direction of the straw itself, not by the density.
STRAW & STRAW
A wall of straw can be is as thick as a standard wall with the same thermal quality.(Rc = 7)
STRAW & STRAWWith a 10mm plaster layer the straw wall gives you fire resistance of 90 min.
Modcel did successful tests with their straw module reaching over 2 hours of fire resistance.
STRO & STROWood-frame construction with straw may increase earthquake providence security.
STRO & STROStraw gives increase attenuation of sound.

STRAW airtight
Continues to be a very importannt but often forgotten aspect.
STRAW airtight
-design of wood structureneeds to be based on straw-airtight tape between rigid parts
-use softwoodboard as render support
