Flight Time Early High School senior takes to the
sky — just like mom
STeve naSH | broWnWood buLLeTInABOVE: Gerrit Zondag checks the engine oil as he pre-flights a Cessna 172 prior to flying the plane on a recent afternoon. BELOW: Gerrit Zondag goes over the engine-start checklist as flight instructor Pete Michaud watches.

It was a breezy and sun-splashed after-noon when the teenage student pilot began a
pre-flight inspection of 5586 Romeo, a four-seat Cessna 172.
Gerrit Zondag, a 17-year-old Early High School student, had a bit of an audience at Brownwood Re-gional Airport that included his mother, Leann, and his grandparents, Jake and Carrol Zondag. The senior
Zondags were visiting from Canada.
“Mind your own business, Mom!” Gerrit joked as his mother — also a pilot — scrutinized his work while he pre-flighted the Cessna. His mother just laughed.
Gerrit waited for his in-structor, Brownwood Flying Service owner Pete Michaud, to arrive. Plans were for the two to fly together for a few minutes and land, then Gerrit would take Cessna back into the air for some solo work.

Members of Coggin Avenue Baptist Church are preparing for this year’s Operation Christmas Child collection campaign, which will take place Nov. 17-24.
The campaign is a project of Samaritan’s Purse which has provided gifts to needy children in more than 95 countries.
Since 1993, more than 113 mil-lion children around the world have received gifts from caring people.
“We do this because, yes we like to give gifts to children around the world who don’t mauve much, but the main thing is that when these children are presented these boxes they’re also told about Jesus Christ,” said Coggin Avenue Baptist Church Relay Center Coordina-tor Kathy Pettit. “Ultimately the goal is to open the doors to Jesus Christ to these children
so that the can see God’s love in action.”
To donate, follow the easy steps below, then delver the box or boxes to the church, located at 1815 Coggin Ave.
• Decide whether your gift will
be for a boy or a girl, and the age category: 2-4, 5-9 or 10-14.
• Fill with a central item that a child will cherish, like a doll or a deflated soccer ball with a pump.

Several items on agenda for Monday’s BCC meeting
BY CALEB MCCAIGBROWNWOOD [email protected]
The Brown County Commission-ers will meet Monday, November 3 with several items on the agenda, including the consideration and pos-sible approval of action regarding the burn ban.
Currently Brown County is not under a burn ban, but according to Precinct 1 com-missioner Gary Worley it’s an important action item to keep on the agenda.
“We keep it on the agenda every meeting, so if we need to implement one we can,” he said. “We’ll discuss the topic Monday morning, but as of now, Brown County is not under a burn ban.”
Other items on the agenda for Monday morning include the con-sideration and possible action on the reappointment of Robert Porter to the Brown County Hospital Au-thority Board, the possible approval of a replacement air conditioning unit for the jail and the possible ap-pointment of a constable in Precinct 1.
The Commissioners will meet at 9 a.m. in the Commissioner’s Court-room.

The griddles are warming up and the mouths of Brown County residents are water-ing in anticipation of the upcoming annual Brownwood Kiwanis Club Pancake Supper.
The 62nd year of the even is bound to be its biggest, and Kiwanis president-elect Royce Blackburn is looking forward to it.
“I think over the years the community of Brownwood have come to appreciate the sup-per as a social event and by attending they know they’re helping local youth-oriented programs,” he said. “The people who come appreciate seeing everyone else who is there and it really shows exactly what the city of Brownwood is all about.”
The supper is approaching quickly, as stomachs will be filled with fresh pancakes Tuesday, November 4 starting at 4:30 p.m.
“We’re expecting around 3,000 people, not counting those who pick up orders and take
