Calicut (Kozhikode) is tagged as the second best city of the country and

is located in the most beautiful state of India, Kerala. This beautiful city

has the most beautiful lakes, beaches, hillocks, parks, rivers, churches,

temples and sculptures. Calicut is said to be the most significant trade

center of Kerala. Because of the presence of marshy land in this place,

the city is often called Chullikkad meaning a shrubby land of jungle.

The spices of this place are famous throughout and attracts traders from

round the world for spices and many other commodities. The economy

of this city is dependent on agriculture and fishery on one hand and

timber, tea, coconut and coffee industry on the other hand.

There is an intensive network of railways in Calicut which connects it to

the major parts of the country such as Mumbai, New Delhi, Chennai,

Mangalore, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Coimbatore, Vijaywada, Palakkad,

Vishakapatnam, Kochi, Trivandrum, Kollam and Kannur. Apart from

these, there are bi-weekly and tri weekly trains for destinations such as

Calicut cuisine

The cuisine of Calicut is under the influence of Indian and foreign

cuisines such as British, Chinese, Arab, European and Gujarati, North

Indian, Jain food and South Indian food. One of the amazing dishes here

is the sweetmeat known as 'Halwa' which is prepared with flour and is

available in every sweetmeat shop. Another one is sadya, which is a

meal accompanied with sambhar, rice, papad and other curries.

Calicut culture

The people of this city give immense importance to the traditional

values that is passed on to them from their ancestors. The language,

dance, songs and music of Calicut reflects its culture in the most

beautiful manner. The songs of this culture have a different tune with

lyrics which synthesis of Malayalam and Arabic. The major dance forms

include Kathakali, Koothu, Kaikottikali and Ottanthullal. The dance

performances are usually made over the mythological tales. The most

significant festivals here are Madapalli and Pooram festival. The love

for art that these people have can be understood from the fact that the

city is famous for art galleries.
