TERM 1 WEEK 4 2019
School Captains and Leaders Induction
We had a wonderful day on Tuesday with the induction of our two school captains
Will and Aidan and our leaders, Cain, James H, Jake, Ethan, James R, Sage and
Henry. We were very proud of the boys and the leadership they are already
showing. Thank you to all that attended and to the families for being involved in
such a special event. A big thanks to Mrs Luther and Mrs Kennedy for all the
organisation and of course, making our young men look so terrific.
Relay for Life
This year we will be holding a mini relay for life on Friday 15th March. We will
have a continuous relay for 6 hours from 8:30am—2:30pm. We hope you can all be
involved and join us for a lap or two and to raise funds for this worthy cause. See
the flyer in the newsletter and more information will be sent home soon.
Sickness
We have had a few cases of the vomiting and diarrhoea bug in the Junior School.
Just a reminder NSW Health recommend students do not return to school until 24
hours after the vomiting and/or diarrhoea have stopped. We do have a number of
students with low immunity and their health is easily compromised. Thank you for
your assistance with this. Have a great week, Jane
We acknowledge Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the traditional
custodians of our lands, Australia. We acknowledge the Wiradjuri nation as the
traditional custodians of these lands we now call Bathurst, and we pay our respects to
their Elders both past and present.

This is a very busy time of year for Assisted School Travel and we are endeavouring to make sure
all of our students’ needs are met with minimal disruption to routine. To assist us with this, please
make sure you let us know of any changes to your child’s needs as soon as you can. This includes
change of address, change of days transport is required due to respite or visitations, change to
student level of assistance required and temporary withdrawal of transport. Changes to transport
arrangements take a minimum of 2 weeks to occur and longer for new applications. Please
remember the sooner you notify us of your requirements the less disruption to your child's
transport.

Class K Janelle Kemp (Teacher)
Yvette Smith (SLSO)
Class K have had a wonderful start to the year and have settled really well into their daily routine.
We have almost finalised our weekly timetable and it is jam packed full of fun learning activities.
The students of Class K are great workers and have shown that they have great skills in a range of
areas. We have started a Unit of Work on Australian Icons and Places and we are also linking this
to our Friday Cooking Program.
Each week we have 2 Key Word Signs and 2 Jolly Phonic Sounds that we are learning. If you visit
our room ask us what they are!! Group story time has been a hit with the students and we have
enjoyed completing activities based on the books: Hairy Maclary and the Three Little Pigs.
Volunteers from Quocka also come to our room on Mondays and we love listening to the stories
they read. But the biggest hit with our students so far have been our trips to the park, our gym
and Tuesdays sport (cricket skills).

CLASS F
Sue Flude (Teacher)
Emma Rush/Katherine Porter (SLSO)
The students of Class F have settled into our classroom and class routine very quickly. This term
we are doing lots of exciting work. We are reading lots of books and completing book studies
including spelling, grammar and comprehension activities. The book we are reading at the
moment is called Pearl Barley and Charlie Parsley which looks at how people can be great friends
even though they are different. In maths groups we are focusing on numbers, place value,
addition and subtraction. Students have enjoyed participating in science experiments discovering
sound and light sources with Ms Couchman. In geography we are learning about our place in the
world, exploring our town, state and country. We were all very safe cutting our strawberries for
our fruit and jelly cups last week. In the mornings we enjoy exercising our fingers in our fine
motor activities. Then we exercise our bodies in our weekly Health Hustle on Thursday and
develop our cricket skills on Wednesdays. Wow! Lots of learning and fun.

7 CLASS D
Dezarae Bastow (Teacher)
Emily Smith (SLSO)
Class D have settled into Term One really well! We’re working hard to get into a class routine,
follow the PBL Rules and learn lots of new skills like Key Word Sign.
We are enjoying reading ‘A Different Dog’ by Paul Jennings and exploring narratives through HOT
(Higher Order Thinking) activities. We’ve also written a short narrative about some children who
got lost in the forest and encounter a bear. We’re enjoying using Reading Eggs and the hands on
activities that were made to accompany the program.
In Mathematics we’re exploring whole numbers and beginning to use Mathletics which is a lot of
fun. We’re doing a lot of hands-on activities using number lines and hundreds charts.
Every Wednesday we enjoy cooking and expanding our food preparation skills. Although we
mostly don’t like to try the foods we thoroughly enjoy cooking for others. We’ve made cookies, a
celery/cream cheese snack, an egg salad and a fruit salad. Yummy!
Every afternoon we come in from the playground and listen to Smiling Minds Mindfulness which
helps us to focus on the ‘right now’ and control some of our stronger emotions. We feel so much
more relaxed afterwards.
What a great start to the year!

Well another year has started and we are off and running at our usual frantic pace. All the
students and staff are ready to spend a fun filled year together.
Kaydee is still not very well but we are looking forward to seeing her back at school very soon
when she is up to it. We welcome a new student to the ‘Resort’ this year and a new teacher, Aatif
has come to us from Class Mc, he is fitting in really well and Mr Woodward is class teacher on
Wednesdays and covering my RFF.
Our program this semester has a very strong sensory focus and incorporates themes of the Circus
- under the big top. Communication and therapy are always a priority.
IEP’s are underway and are a great opportunity for all stakeholders in our very special students
lives to come together and set their priorities for the year.
We would like to congratulate Will on being one of Carenne’s 2019 School Captains.
Until we catch up next time, take care and stay safe from all of us in Class B.

We have been riding gyro bikes and really happy with everyone’s ability to steer and navigate the
bikes.
We are delighted to see all students engaged in our sensory art lessons using the blender

11 CLASS R
Adam Ryan (Teacher)
Mick Phillips (SLSO)
We have enjoyed the start of the year, getting to know each other and adjusting back into school
life. We have started a Science unit on ‘The Environment’ which has involved us continuing the
recycling efforts from last year, by utilising the Return and Earn Program. In Food Technology we
acted as food critics, tasted all different fruits and ranked them by flavour, before creating our
own yummy fruit salad and yoghurt. The School has had its new basketball ring installed and the
class all enjoy using it during their breaks. We are playing cricket for school sport on Tuesdays
which will be used as practise for some students to attend the indoor cricket carnival later this
term. The school swimming carnival has been and all students who attended really enjoyed the
day. The ‘big splash’ and ‘best dive’ were favourite events. We would like to congratulate Stanley
on performing his first Acknowledgement of Country at the School Captain’s Induction. Well
Done. We are looking forward to a fantastic year of learning, fun and adventure.

Class S
Peta Sykes (Teacher)
Karina Molenkamp (SLSO)
Class S have settled in really well to our daily routine. We have welcomed a new student to the
school and our class, Jackson. A few of our favourite things to do so far is our bus trips to do
shopping for the classroom and also for our cooking lessons on Tuesday after sport. Each week
one of our students chooses a recipe to create and they find the recipe online. We focus on
healthy but delicious recipes and the students really enjoy the ownership of creating their own
cooking ideas. This year we are also focusing on movement and physical exercise to promote
healthy bodies and waken up our brains to learn. We are enjoying our Health Hustle Program
every Thursday where we move our bodies to music. We also love our warm ups and cool downs
and finish it with a big high five to encourage a positive attitude and a happy day at school. We
are looking forward to a lovely year in Class S.

We have had a great start to our first Term. We would like to welcome Angela, Logan and Lily to
Class N, who have come from other primary schools, to their new Year 7. They are settling in well
and made some great class and school fiends, very quickly. We have enjoyed talking to all our
student’s parents and carers, with the IEP meetings, and sharing some important information
about their children and working out where we should go, for this year.
We have been establishing our class subject, lessons and routines as well as having some fun
both in the class and in the playground. We had a great time at the Bathurst Aquatic Centre—at
the Carenne Swimming Carnival.
We have also had a few students and staff’s birthdays lately, and enjoyed showing our new
students the RDA and Pets as Therapy Complex—as well as the Greenhouse that we are going to
use soon with our Agriculture subject, of growing winter vegetables.

14 CLASS O
Christine Okello (Teacher)
Robyn Staader (SLSO)
Welcome back to school this year! We hope that you had a really enjoyable holiday and are ready
for the school year ahead. We have had a great start of the year and students have settled to
their routine. We have been meeting with parents and carers to discuss Individual Educational
Program. It was great showcasing the work that the students have been doing since the
beginning of the term and we were able to discuss work planned for the year. For classroom
strategies and behaviour management, students in my class are enrolled in the ClassDojo, a
program that uses a reward system and keeps record of students’ achievements and engagement
in class. Students need to earn 3 Bronze Medals (30 ClassDojo points for each Bronze Medal), 3
Silver Medals (30 ClassDojo points for each Silver Medal) and 30 ClassDojo points for a Gold
Medal. Parents can be included and they can access their child’s progress at home. We look
forward to another year of great work.

15 CLASS L
Ros Luther | Myles Woodward (Teacher)
Paula Hundy | Melinda Gavin (SLSO)
What an awesome beginning to the year with everybody settling in so well to either their new
class or new classmates.
We have been very busy getting to know each other as well as reminding everybody of class and
school expectations. As we are a Senior class we are encouraging independence as much as
possible in readiness for either leaving school at the end of this year or in the next couple of
years.
We have 4 School leaders in Class L who celebrated with family and friends on Tuesday at the
Leader’s Induction Ceremony. Aidan Bedwell, Henry Ryan, Sage Kalayzich and Ethan Kavwenji.
Our other classmates are Connor Drewe, Matthew Read and Dylan Cowan.
Class L will continue to run the Coffee Club each week and our ‘newbies’ have slotted in very well
to the program already. Matthew and Connor being an awesome help with delivering the goodies
to staff at their tables at recess and Mrs Gavin has been learning to use our new coffee machine
which last years school leavers donated to the school as their end of year gift.
We have been very impressed with the work ethic in the classroom and can’t wait to see how
much we can get through this year.

17 Macquarie Tutorial Centre
Leeanne Graham / Katrina Johnston / Katie Moss / Tania Pringle (Teacher)
Jodie Toomey / Khiara Ryan / Julie Buining (SLSO)
Macquarie Tutorial Centre students have been using their creative abilities through the use of
STEM challenges. Every fortnight all classes are provided a STEM challenge design brief. Students
are provided with a variety of materials, requirements, specifications and time allocations. So far
students have been challenged with the requirement to design and build a cantilever and a
bridge. It has been wonderful seeing the sportsmanship, participation and dedication in meeting
the design briefs. Well done to all of the fabulous creators. We look forward to seeing your
future creations.
