Forproperdocumentationofsiteconditions,communicationofprogress,issueidentificationandforclarificationpurposesandnumerousotherreasons,manysitephotoshadtobetakenattheJohnLewisCheltenhamproject.Thechallengeisbeingabletocapturesufficientinformationandalsodocumenting,managingandlocatingimagesforcurrentandfutureuse.
Key Challenges

Takingtraditionalphotosofthecorrectsubjectsisnoteasy,youneedtoknowwhatwillcauseissuesbeforehand.360° imagessolvethis issue.Evenwhentheyshowthecorrectsubject, traditionalphotosoftenremain inthecamera,arelostasteammembersleavetheproject,orbecomedisorganisedinfile-systemphotofolders,withoutanylinkorrelationtotheactuallocationon-sitewheretheyhavebeentaken.
With our traditional documentation method of using traditional 2D images andmanaging them in folderstructures,it took our team in the field 5 hours to capture and 5 additional hours to manage all the data perweek.Thisisatotalof330hoursoverthedurationoftheprojecttime,resultingin£24,750fortheproject.Theresultingimageswerethenstoredinadeepfolderstructurethatwasneithereasilyaccessiblenorintuitivetonavigate,makingithardforstakeholderstoknowwhatisgoingon.

WiththeuseofaRicohThetaVcamera,an iPad and the HoloBuilder solution,theJohnLewisprojectteamhasreducedphoto documentation time by 50%whilealsogainingavaluabledeliverablethat’s shared with the owner, architect and other project stakeholders. Eventhough not the entire client team wasable to attend the site on a regularbasis, providing them with the 360°HoloBuilder documentation of theprojectallowedustoalwayskeepthemuptodatenonetheless.
With the new documentation method of using HoloBuilder,ittookourteaminthefield5hourstocaptureand0hourstomanagethedataperweek.Thisisatotalof165hoursoverthedurationoftheprojecttime,resultingin£12,375fortheproject.Includingthecostofthesoftware,adirectbenefitof£10,375couldberealised.Usingstraightforwardmath,theprojectteamwasabletoproveaReturnofInvestment(ROI)ofmorethansixtimes(6x)thesoftwarecost,excludinganyadditionalbenefitsthatarehardertoquantifysuchasQuality,Legal,aswellasHealthandSafetybenefits.

• Dedicateamobiledevice(iOSorAndroid)totheprocessofcapturinganduploadingphotoswiththeJobWalkApp.
• Establishthelocationsforphotosatanearlyprojectstage,e.g.byplacingLocationMarkersintheHoloBuilderWebEditorfortheteaminthefield(JobWalkPlanner),andsticktothoselocations.
• Dedicatea fewmembersof theteamtotakethephotos.Dependingonthesizeof thesite thecapturingprocesscantakebetween30minutesto2hours.
• MakeuseofHoloBuilder’sWebEditor“automaticfaceblur”function,which(whenactivated)blursoutallfacesinanimageaftercapturingandomitstheriskoffacesbeingvisibleintheimages.“Manualblur”alsoexistsifsomefacesarenotfullydetectedorotherareasneedtobeblurredout.
