Cat 3116 engine. This modern, turbocharged and aftercooled, six-cylinder engine provides highperformance in a fuel-efficient, lowemissions package.
Superior lugging performance. Hightorque output and high torque rise makethe 3116 engine very responsive. Theengine's lugging capability allows it topull through sudden, short-termincreases in loads, reducing the need todownshift. As a result, the operator canmaintain consistent, desirable workingspeeds, which means the work getsdone faster.
Fuel efficiency. Unit injectors deliververy high fuel injection pressures toensure proper mixing of fuel to air. Thisvery high injection pressure, coupledwith the precise metering and timing ofthe fuel injection, results in superiorfuel efficiency and reduced emissions.
Extended engine life. A strong, rigidcylinder block, large-sized bearings androbust reciprocating parts are designedto withstand the rigors of high-pressure,low-emissions engines.
Dual secondary fuel filters provide anextra measure of assurance againstengine and fuel system damage causedby fuel contaminants.
Engine power management delivers afull-rated net power of 116 kW (155 hp)in gears 4-8 forward. In lower gears, where the machine is traction-limited,engine horsepower is automaticallyreduced to 101 kW (135 hp). Enginepower management works to lower fuelconsumption as well as reduce tireslippage and wear in the lower gears.
Electronic overspeed protection helpsprevent engine and transmissiondamage from premature downshiftingand grade-induced overspeeding.
Power TrainMatched Cat components deliver smooth, responsive performance and reliability.
5
Power shift transmission. Caterpillardesigns and builds transmissionsspecifically for Cat motor graders. Thetransmission provides on-the-go, full-power shifting as well as inchingcapability.
Direct drive delivers superior fuelefficiency and better ÒfeelÓ of bladeloads, material hardness and groundspeed.
Gear selections. Eight forward speedsand six reverse speeds give the operatora wide operating range. With four gearselections below 9.7 km/h (6 mph), theoperator can precisely match workingspeeds to job conditions for maximumproductivity in earthmovingapplications.
Electronic transmission controlproduces easy, smooth shifts, whichenable the operator to maintain uniformsurfaces if shifting is required. Smoothshifts also extend the life of thetransmission by placing less stress ontransmission clutches. A single levercontrols direction, speed and theparking brake.
Inching capability. Low pedal effortand excellent modulation provideprecise control of machine movementswhen using the inching pedal. This isespecially important in finish grading orother close-quarter work where machinecontrol is critical.
Dual air system supplies brakingcapacity to each side of the machine. This system ensures secondary brakingcapability in the event a failure occursin a single brake line. The dual airsystem also has a large reserve forstalled-engine braking.
Oil-disc brakes. Caterpillar designs andbuilds multi-disc brakes that arecompletely sealed and adjustment-free.The brakes are oil-bathed, air-actuatedand spring-released. They are located ateach tandem wheel to eliminate brakingloads on the power train and to reduceservicing time. The large brake surfaceprovides dependable braking capabilityand extended life before rebuild.
6
HydraulicsBalanced hydraulics deliver consistent, precise and responsive control.
Power on demand. Normally, thevariable displacement pump idles atnear-zero output. When it senses a loadrequirement, the pump supplies flowand pressure to match the demand. Theresult is less hydraulic system heat andlower power consumption.
Implement control valves are designedand built by Caterpillar specifically formotor graders. They provideoutstanding operator ÒfeelÓ andpredictable system response forunmatched implement control. To helpmaintain exact blade settings, lockvalves are built into all control valves.Line relief valves are also incorporatedinto selected control valves to protectthe cylinders from overpressurization.
Low operator effort. Implement controlsare designed to reduce operator fatigue. They feature short lever throws and loweffort in both directions. Properlyspaced control levers and short leverthrows allow the operator to usemultiple controls with one hand.
Balanced flow. When the operator usesseveral controls at one time, flow isproportioned to ensure all implementscan operate simultaneously. If hydraulicdemand exceeds pump capacity, cylinder velocity will be reduced by thesame ratio.
Large independent oil supply preventscross-contamination and providesproper oil cooling, which means lessheat build-up and extended componentlife.

7
Drawbar, Circle & MoldboardEvery component is designed for maximum productivity and durability.
Blade positioning. The blade linkagedesign enhances moldboard positioning. This blade linkage is most beneficial inditch cutting and cleaning.
Blade angle. A long wheel base allowsthe operator to obtain an aggressivemoldboard angle. This aggressive anglepermits material to roll more freelyalong the blade, which reduces powerrequirements. This is particularlyhelpful in handling very dry materials, cohesive soils, snow and ice.
Rugged construction. The Y-framedrawbar is constructed of two solidbeams. To resist wear, teeth areinduction-hardened in the critical areas. The circle is secured to the drawbar by four support shoes.
Replaceable wear items. Tough, durable nylon composite wear insertsare located between the drawbar andcircle, and between the support shoesand circle. This wear system helps keepcomponents tight for fine grading andallows easy replacement. In addition toproviding extended life, these insertsallow higher circle turning forces byreducing the friction between the circleand drawbar. Replaceable metallic wearinserts are used in the blade lift andcentershift cylinder sockets, draftballsurface and moldboard slide rail.
Circle drive slip clutch. Protects thedrawbar, circle and moldboard fromshock when the end of the bladeencounters hidden objects. It alsoreduces the possibility of the gradermaking abrupt directional changes, further protecting the machine, operatorand surroundings.
8
Operator’s StationCaterpillar sets the standard for comfort, convenience and visibility.
9
Excellent visibility helps improveoperator confidence and productivity inall grader applications. The well-positioned blade linkage provides anunobstructed view of the moldboard andfront tires. The operator has a clearview of the moldboard heel and tandemtires. A tapered engine hood providesgood visibility to the rear of themachine.
