SACRED HEART CATHEDRAL PARISH
Parish Established 1856 • Present Cathedral Started 1889
MISSION STATEMENT: We, the people of Sacred Heart Cathedral Parish, Davenport, are called together as a spiritual community to serve God and one another by building up the Body of Christ through proclaiming and living the Gospel.
January 3, 2016 • Epiphany of the Lord
Happy New Year Turning the calendar to 2016 seems
incredible. When I was young (a few years ago) the
year 2000 seemed like the far and distant future, and
now we’re in the 16th year of this century. As the years
pass by, they absolutely are going faster and faster. We
wonder what’s in store for us in this year to come.
As I think back through this past week in our celebration of Christmas, I can’t help but
appreciate and thank the many people of Sacred Heart Cathedral who collaboratively
worked together in making our parish and our liturgies as beautiful as they were. A
special thank you to our musicians and choir!! Awesome ☺ Those involved in the
environment and decorating. A huge thank-you to the Vietnamese Community for their
assistance decorating! As well the many ministers of hospitality, servers, Eucharistic
Ministers, readers, all who stepped up and represented Sacred Heart Cathedral with a
warm and generous heart. Our entire community thanks each and all of you for your
support and love of Sacred Heart Cathedral! Also, a note of thanks to All Saints Catholic
School for donating the garland and wreaths which beautifully decorated our Cathedral!
Thanks to all!!!
Regarding Sacred Heart’s building capital campaign, it is hoped that a newsletter/
update will be coming out in a couple of weeks detailing the progress of our campaign.
Plans for breaking ground and moving forward haven’t been sealed or announced to
this date-- we’re thinking more and more of being able to do so. This is something we
can look forward to as we head into the New Year. If you haven’t made a pledge or
contribution to our campaign yet, we certainly invite you to do so! Every contribution
counts! BIG NEWS!! Several weeks ago I met with Jim Collins and Jim Tiedje with
the request they “take over” the campaign! Jim Tiedje, recently retired from QCBT,
with the collaboration of Jim Collins, I think will help me out TREMENDOUSLY in
getting out to see/meet more people in the fund-raising prospects. I thank them for their
help and support. They’re going to help move our groundbreaking date ahead I’m sure!
Supporting our campaign AND Sacred Heart Cathedral is the upcoming
CATHEDRAL SUNDAY weekend February 13 and 14th!! This year will be the 2nd
Annual Cathedral Sunday in our diocese, established mostly to enhance the awareness
and identity of our Cathedral throughout the Davenport Diocese! As a part of this
celebration, SHC will host our 2nd SACRED HEART EVENT, a formal steak (and
chicken) dinner in our parish hall. The seating is limited, but the environment, food,
social and entertainment is phenomenal. Tickets are $65 each and all proceeds benefit
the new hall soon to be built. Held the 2nd weekend of February it’s oh so appropriate
to ‘give your heart to the Sacred Heart’ on this Valentine Day weekend!
January is also the month for the Catholic Messenger subscription drive. I would like
every family in our parish to subscribe to the Messenger to become more in tuned to
diocesan news, events and happenings as much as what’s going on in the world
regarding our Catholic faith. Not every paper gets read thoroughly, but having the
paper visible and readily available gives opportunities for even youth to pick up and find
out more about their church and faith. Just having it available can make a big difference in
our youth’s involvement and participation, a very important part of raising Catholic children!
Have a great and wonderful 1st week of 2016.

DEACON DAN’S COLUMN
“See, darkness covers the earth, and thick clouds cover the peoples; but upon you the
LORD shines, and over you appears his glory.” Isaiah 60: 2
What are you searching for in your life? What gets you up and moving when you arise in the morning? This week the Church celebrates the Feast of the Epiphany of the Lord. Epiphany means manifestation. What the Church celebrates today is the manifestation of our Lord to the whole world; after being made known to the shepherds of Bethlehem He is revealed to the Magi who have come from the East to adore Him.
The Christ Child appears to a world filled with the darkness of sin and as we know reveals how that darkness will be overcome. God offers God-self in the person of Jesus the Emmanuel so that God’s mercy and justice will be made manifest. As we know the Light that Jesus brings into the world reveals the sacrificial nature of the Holy Trinity who are in an eternal exchange of self-giving.
Jesus comes as a gift. The response to this gift by the magi is to bring their gifts to the Christ Child. Filled with excitement, wonder, and expectation they drop everything to follow the light. With them, they brought gifts. Perhaps, what is most powerful is that they brought themselves and their faith in what God had promised through the prophets, like Isaiah in today’s first reading, was fulfilled in the Christ Child.
In this year of Mercy we are reminded that mercy itself has been given to us and we in turn are to continue to follow the light and offer ourselves as a gift to the poor, the lonely, the hungry, and the forgotten. To whom will you bring your gift this week?
Merry Christmas!
