I wanted to share a few highlights from my recent trip to England with you. There were so many high-
lights, and contrary to what you might expect, we actually had really good weather the whole time!
Lambeth Palace is the home of the Anglican Archbishop of Canterbury, kind of like their Vatican, as it
were. I went there to attend a reception and launch of a book written by a contemporary of mine from
my Rome days, Fr Mark Vickers. Reunion Revisited: 1930s Ecumenism Exposed sounds like a provocative
title, but the book is a important historical testament to a fascinating period of history. From 1921-
1927, there was a series of informal conversations between Anglicans and Catholics about reunion. The
conversations ended after Cardinal Bourne, the fiery Archbishop of Westminster, intervened and called
foul on the direction that some of those conversations were going, particularly in light of Pius XI’s encyc-
lical Mortalium animos in 1928, which warned against excesses in ecumenical dialogue.
Conventional wisdom has it that ecumenical dialogue went dead until Vatican II. The Anglican-Roman
Catholic dialogue (known as ARCIC), has produced an impressive series of joint declarations, and they
do bear witness to those impressive points of unity between the two communions. Fr Vickers actually
documents a fascinating story of Anglican and Roman Catholic laity and clergy who continued to quietly pray for and work towards unity in the decade after the Malines Conversations. There were all kinds of
eccentric and elegant personalities who engaged in these unofficial conversations.
By the 1990s, several small attempts at groups of Anglicans coming into communion with Rome oc-
curred, some more successful than others. Pope Benedict XVI, as a theologian had a clear vision of how
unity could and could not be achieved. And so in 2009, he established a structure by which groups of
Anglicans could be “united and not absorbed” into the Catholic Church, preserving those parts of the
Anglican patrimony which were not antithetical to the Catholic faith, while being authentically Catholic.
Those quiet conversations in the 1920s and 1930s finally bore fruit in a new and creative way of achiev-
ing unity.
It was a bit odd being in the headquarters of the Church of England among so many priests and laity who
are converts from Anglicanism, who have traveled this journey to reunion in different ways, even as the
Archbishop of Canterbury was holding a garden party for journalists a few feet away. But it struck me
how sometimes it takes a very long and winding road that requires patience, fortitude and creativity to
overcome the divisions and barriers of the past.

encounter Mary's loving guidance
in little ways on a daily basis. In
this presentation, she reflects on the joys and sor-
rows that Mary prayerfully experienced during her time on Earth, and shares how her example leads
us closer to Christ.
