If any of us were asked to imagine what honor looks like, many would likely conjure an image of a working American cowboy. A man short on words, but long on character. One who cares far less for his own well-being than for ensuring that of others. The particular honor belonging to cowboys has somehow always seemed different from honor anywhere else.
These are the things we were thinking of when we named the 2009 Ball “Honor of Cowboys.” It’s also the defini-tion we come up with when we think of you. Every one of you is here because of your giving spirit. You’re here because your character wouldn’t have it any other way. And because you know that the cure for cancer can never happen without the commitment of honorable people.
We are so privileged to be with you tonight in the presence of so many genuine American heroes. This night will be one we will always remember, and it is a night in honor of you. Katherine Wynne LaLonde, 2009 Ball Chairman
