Cause #1: Alliances A number of alliances had been signed by countries
between the years 1879 and 1914. These were important because they meant that some countries had no option but to declare war if one of their allies declared war first.
Cause #2: Imperialism the policy of extending the rule or authority of an
empire or nation over foreign countries, or of acquiring and holding colonies and dependencies
Cause #3: Militarism the belief or desire of a government or people that a
country should maintain a strong military capability and be prepared to use it aggressively to defend or promote national interests
Cause #4: Nationalism a feeling that people have of being loyal to and proud
of their country often with the belief that it is better and more important than other countries
Cause #5: Crises
a difficult or dangerous situation that needs serious attention
