Janet Bustos — Attends Owasso & Pryor Support Groups
Center for Bariatrics Newsletter May 2014
"It is a reward both ways. I mentor to give back - helping
pre-op patients get ready and letting them know every
journey is different. I give them confidence in their
decision. It is the best decision for their future. It keeps
me focused on what I have to do still today to continue
my own journey. I believe in this surgery and tell
everyone about my surgery. I am off diabetes and blood
pressure medicine. My life turned around. I'm so thankful
I had the courage to do this!"
Celebrating success! We continue to have patients that overcome obstacles and breakdown barriers.
All of these patients understand that the surgery is a tool and have embraced
the post-op experience. They are active in Support Groups and follow a strict
follow-up schedule with the dietitian and Dr. Kirk. The program is proud of the
success of these patients and there passion to “pay it forward” to new patients
entering the program through support groups.

"After much research, I knew
The Center for Bariatrics at
Bailey Medical Center was the
best around. Dr. JoeBob Kirk,
Dr. Steven Katsis and all the
bariatric crew have been
instrumental in how successful
this has been for me. I have
researched, paid attention,
followed the plan, and continue
to use my ‘tool’ as it’s intended." Becky Parkinson — Muskogee Support Group
"So life has been going great! I am down 84 pounds! July 3 is my one-
year mark, so I am going for another 20 pounds by then to hit my 100-
pound mark! Energy has been through the roof! I am back to running
routinely and have added weight lifting back to my regimen. I am working
in the ICU so the exercise is a great stress relief. Before the surgery, I
had been paying for a gym membership and not going, because I had so
much negative self-talk
about myself. I was
defeating myself before I
had even begun! Now I
go to the gym with my
head held high and I
know that the only limits I
have in life are the limits I
set for myself. I am
excited about this journey
called life!"
Sandra Facey — Owasso Support Group
"I am totally blown away as to how different I look and feel. I have a new
lease of life and taking every advantage of it. I am back to riding horses
again as well as enjoying both my family and work family. My energy has
gone through the roof and at
60 years old I feel like 30. So
watch out Veva is back!!!
Thank you to all the Staff at
Bailey Bariatric, you guys are
the best, everyone has been
so supportive."
"This surgery gave me a
second chance at life. For
that reason, I want to pay it
forward. I was able to
donate a kidney to my son-
in-law and give him a
second chance at life. It
gives you a new lease on
life. You're living life again!"
Veva Moore — Muskogee Support Group Leader
Lisa Olinger — Owasso Support Group
“My only regret is that I did not pursue this option many years ago. Had I known how much better I would immediately feel, I would have jumped on the opportunity to have sleeve gastrectomy long ago. For me, this surgery was more about prolonging my life and making it possible for me and my
family to do the things we enjoy. The weight loss is an added bonus. In the month and a half since I began the pre-op liquid diet I have lost about 50 pounds, but more importantly I am already back to doing things I couldn't do before surgery. Bailey has not only changed my life, but the lives of my family, and for that I am eternally grateful!” Charlie Green — Muskogee Support Group
"I can honestly say if I had to do the
surgery again I would. After spending
over 20 years of my life overweight I
realize there was another whole per-
son waiting to get out and experience
life. I couldn't even bend over to tie
my shoe without being uncomforta-
ble. Dr. Varnell gave me my life back!
The whole team at Bailey has been
so helpful and kind. I'm blessed to
have found this group of wonderful
people who have been there to help
me through this journey! I'm only six
months post-op and not exactly
where I want to be but I am well on
my way!"

Fun with Flavor Add-ins
There’s more to life than chocolate and vanilla. Sugar free flavor add-ins
can be used with the no-added sugar Carnation Breakfast Essentials
before surgery or protein shakes and yogurts after surgery. You can use
flavor extracts you find in the baking section of the grocery store, sugar free
syrups (Torani or DaVinci brands in the coffee aisle), powdered flavors like
Crystal Light and liquid drops like MIO or Dasani. Look for generic
equivalents to save some money. Need some ideas? A few drops of orange
extract in a vanilla protein drink will have you sipping a “Dreamsicle” in a
hurry. Use sugar free caramel or hazelnut syrup in a chocolate protein
drink, heat gently and enjoy in the morning. Use sugar free powders and
liquid drop to add to plain yogurt. Yogurt can be high in added sugars if you
aren’t reading the food labels. Let’s have some fun with flavors.
Feeling Fuller Longer
Are you hungry or do you feel empty?
Figuring out which you are feeling can be
quite a challenge. There are a few things to
work on to extend feeling full. First, are you
eating enough solid proteins? Liquid sources
of calories will empty from your stomach
pouch a lot quicker than a solid form of food.
If you are having difficulty tolerating solid
protein like chicken after surgery, you can
work with the dietitian to help you find ways to
tolerate them better. Second, higher protein
intake will also keep you feeling full.
Carbohydrates are more quickly digested than
protein rich foods. Lastly, are you chewing to
applesauce consistency? Studies are showing
that thoroughly chewing your food leads to
longer periods of feeling full. How you eat is
as important as what you eat.
Multiple Tries at Finding the Right Multi-Supplement
It may take multiple tries to find the right multi-supplement for you. We
recommend a supplement like the regular or silver version of the Centrum
multi-supplement, because these contain a complete array of essential
vitamins and minerals needed for health except for iron and calcium.
Recently, a patient was in for the 2nd nutrition visit prior to surgery. This
patient wasn’t taking a multi-supplement, because the one that was tried
was “chalky and gritty.” This patient did a “one and done” without any
further research about what was available. Multi-supplements come in
powdered, liquid, chewable and small gel cap forms. If you are struggling
to find a multi-supplement, make an appointment with the dietitian, come
to a support group meeting or visit the websites on the reference and
resource list you got in the initial nutrition visit. Check it out!
When was the last time you saw the Dietitian?
The program now expect patients to see the Dietitian every 3 months the
first year after surgery. Bariatric dietary requirements are changing and
evolving as new research becomes available. Are you staying on top of
the latest research by doing follow-up appointments with our two
dietitians? You are responsible for your journey. Your decision to do
follow-up visits and attend support groups will be critical to your success.
Call 918-376-8410 to schedule your appointment with the Dietitian.
Calories After Surgery: Shooting at a Moving Target
How many calories should I have after surgery? The answer: It depends.
In the first few months after surgery, an average intake is between 500 to
800 calories per day. Your stomach pouch is very small so you won’t be
able to get much in that first few weeks. By a year out, you may need
1000 to 1500 calories depending on your activity level, height, gender,
bone density and musculature. Your dietitians can help you find a target
range of calories based on your activity level and weight loss goals.
Remember, protein first and then the rest.
