FAQ
Rules! Rules! Rules!
Within our PowerChart Maternity
content packages, we have several
offerings of rules. Rules are
designed to provide an action when
certain criterion is met.
This month we are highlighting our
“7 Day Re-Admission” rule. If this
rule is being utilized, it will notify the
patient’s OB provider and Delivery
provider if the patient is re-admitted
to the hospital within a week of
being discharged after the delivery
of a baby.
This rule can be found in PCM
package 63529.

FAQ
Finalizing a fetal monitor episode
Finalizing is an important last step
as it removes the patient from the
FetaLink Census, while making her
archived episode available to clini-
cians for future viewing.
Once an episode is archived, you will
not be able to add annotations to it.
To finalize your patient’s fetal
monitor episode, simply select the
Finalize button from the FetaLink
toolbar in your patient’s single
patient view. If your patient is still
associated to her fetal monitor
device, the button will display as
Finalize & Disassociate. Selecting
this option allows you to perform
both actions with one click.
Don’t forget to add a Reason for
Monitoring when prompted, so that
the episode can be easily identified
later.

Birth Log Extract Report
Provides a comprehensive summary and extraction of pregnancy delivery
information (mother and baby) to record and preserve statistical data.
Can extract data and save in a .csv file and then import the data into an Excel
spreadsheet.
Nurse Managers / Administrators can use the report to run stats as needed
(such as on a monthly, quarterly or annual basis).
A reporting spreadsheet is available that provides examples of reports that can be
created using Excel and the Extractable Birth Log Book. Report examples include:
an Apgar report, an EBL report, an episiotomy /degree of episiotomy report, and
an abbreviated delivery summary report.
Note: The Extract will display up to 13 months of data. An error message indicating
that the dates cannot be more than 13 months apart will notify the user if the
timeframe of 13 months is exceeded.

Involvement
February is American Heart Month
On Friday, February 1, 2013, join us
in observing National Wear Red Day.
Heart disease is the No. 1 killer of
women and is more deadly than all
forms of cancer combined. While 1
in 31 American women dies from
breast cancer each year, 1 in 3 dies
of heart disease.

Symptoms of a
Heart Attack Uncomfortable pressure,

more than a few minutes, or
goes away and comes back.
Pain or discomfort in one or
both arms, the back, neck, jaw

Shortness of breath, with or
without chest discomfort.
Other signs such as breaking out
in a cold sweat, nausea or light-

As with men, the most common
heart attack symptom in women is
chest pain or discomfort. But it’s
important to note that women are
more likely to experience the other
common symptoms, particularly
shortness of breath, nausea/
vomiting and back or jaw pain.
Maintaining Industry Awareness
Cervical Cancer Screening - Have you updated your health maintenance rule?
Cerner is staying in touch with the latest industry standards as we have on our
roadmap for this year to develop a Pap smear Tracker to be included as the first piece
of a new GYN documentation workflow.
The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) - The Committee on
Patient Safety and Quality Improvement recently published a new article (Number 546
in December 2012) entitled ‘Tracking and Reminder Systems.’
They are recommending providers establish a simple, reliable tracking and reminder
system to facilitate communication, improve patient safety and quality of care, and
minimize missed or delayed diagnosis.

What We’re Doing
Workflow Assessments
Since June 2012, the Women’s Health Client Service Managers have completed 11
workflow assessments in an effort to continue to engage our clients, identify opportu-
nities for improvement and build client satisfaction within our existing client base.
Over the course of three days at the client site, end users, IT staff and leadership are
interviewed and shadowed as a way to identify possible gaps in workflow against the
Cerner recommended workflow around PowerChart Maternity and FetaLink. Findings
are reviewed and owners of identified issues are assigned.
In doing these assessments, we are seeing that additional education on the system
and small fixes are all that is needed to help the clinicians optimize their workflow. A
follow up call is arranged in order to verify that the issues are being worked toward
resolution. The ABU has received nothing but positive feedback to date. Clients feel
there is a true partnership and that we help to mitigate any current issues they are
facing. Additionally, we want to obtain client feedback on ways in which we could
strengthen our solutions.
The cost of this assessment will be travel and expenses for one or two associates,
there will be no charge for the consulting service hours.
For more information please contact Kaisha Norgren at [email protected]
or Lindsey Ackerson at [email protected].

Yavapai Regional Medical Center
Yavapai Regional Medical Center went live
with 55 Cerner solutions on June 11, 2012,
including PowerChart Maternity and
FetaLink. The Family Birthing Center is a
Level II facility, located on the East Campus
of YRMC, with 80 – 100 births per month. It
has 16 LDRP beds, a 6 bed Continuing Care
Nursery and 2 dedicated OB Operating Room
Suites for C-Section patients.
For the implementation project, the hospital developed a “Race Car” theme, with vari-
ous departments having their own representative racer in the field. It was fun to have
a little lightheartedness going on when everything was so intense. Our core PCM
work group even renamed PowerChart Maternity to “MamaNet”.
After an incredibly intense build period, we launched our training program about 6
weeks before Go-Live. PCM developed a program of 20 hours of class time for the RN,
16 hours of class time for the US/NA/OB Tech. The classes were taught by the PCM
Work Group Team (5 of us). The Education Department of our hospital developed the
concept of “Application Coach” to assist in the training and coaching through Go-
Live. The hospital supplemented the training process by providing open labs where a
staff member could go in to practice the various applications. Also, a Train domain was
available for anyone to use at any time to practice.
Application Coaches were recruited from both shifts; serving as Rovers during the clas-
ses to give elbow-to-elbow help. At Go-Live and for two weeks thereafter, two Applica-
tion Coaches were on duty without patient assignments in order to provide that all-
important elbow-to-elbow support. They also were able to troubleshoot and escalate
issues as they came up.

Client Spotlight
At one point we realized that “MamaNet” really encompassed 5 different solutions
that our staff had to learn:
PowerChart Maternity (Tracking Shell & CareNet)
FetaLink
SurgiNet (Our nurses circulate our C-sections)
Registration (We Quick Reg all of our patients)
Scheduling (We manage our own scheduling for Inductions, C-sections,
Antenatal Testing, and so on)
The staff did a great job learning as much as they could as fast as they could….and that
learning process goes on today as we go deeper into what PCM & FetaLink can do for
us.
Our Application Coaches now meet twice a month to discuss design revisions, work-
flow and functionality issues. At our monthly staff meetings we highlight two or three
items in PCM or FetaLink that need reinforcement, such as re-evaluation of pain or the
scanning meds process.
We have also developed an in-house “MamaNet Stuff” newsletter to get the word out
for updates, changes and refinements. Our Transformation Leader also puts out a reg-
ular newsletter for the whole house.
