The President’s Page ……….by John Nowicki

Happy Holidays ! Sitting here at my desk thinking about the Holi-days that just seem to creep up with out warning’ as usual, I realize another year really has passed. I remember as a kid waiting forever for things to happen like school to let out, vacation and Christ-mas. My folks would say that patience was a vir-tue and things would happen when they were ready and that when you get older you would wish and hope for the opposite. I now know what they meant. We have had a very busy and exciting year. It’s difficult to remember all the activities we sup-ported this year as well as or own. Some of the more memorable ones always are at the top of the list such as Oshkosh and Sun N Fun. The other one that comes to mind that made the most im-pact at least in my mind was the chapter silk screening night. We were so proud how smoothly everything went and how many shirts we were able to screen. The assembly line was running like a finely tuned 27 cylinder high horsepower radial engine without oil leaks. The equipment and materials performed without a hitch, the cleanup crew shut the lights out well before midnight. A few days later, it was brought to our attention that something had terribly gone wrong. The ink did not dry on some of the shirts. I guess our finely tuned radial encountered some problems. It was later learned that the ink needed to be heat- set. It was very easy to recognize our chapter members at Air Venture 2007. All you had to do was look for a blue-inked tie-dyed type of a shirt and you knew where they belonged. We will get it corrected for the next time if you all trust us. There is a lot to be said for our bunch, we defi-nitely know how to have a good time, make a diffi-cult situation work, always be there for for fellow chapter members and most importantly, we make some great memories. Merry Christmas and

happy New year from my family to yours. Safety/Maintenance Pull-type starters on older Cessna aircraft: – When you flip on the master switch, click the mags to both and pull that “T” handle, you are actually causing the starter to engage with the engine through a set of gears. You can’t be lazy, you have to pull with some authority. If you don’t, you may start to cause improper wear on the gear teeth. If this mechanism is not properly adjusted you will do the same thing. If either of these conditions continue, the wear will also continue to a point where a fracture of one or more of the teeth will occur and your engine may not start. More importantly, all the broken teeth and metal shavings are now in your engine. I don’t think we need to elaborate on what comes next. Coupe Chronicles I thought painting an aircraft was fairly difficult. I think the engine parts are worse. Finishing up the engine case proved to be a bigger ordeal than anticipated. Taping over smooth aluminum is one thing, but taping over rough cast surfaces is an adventure. I think there is more time in pre-paring everything for paint than the actual assembly. I con-tinually get reminded on how long things take. It’s amazing how quickly we forget. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Story of the Month A friend of mine, who is an airline copilot, told the following stories about a captain with whom he often flew. This guy was an excellent pilot, but not real good at making passen-gers feel at ease. For example, one time the airplane in front of him blew a tire on landing, scattering chunks of rubber all over the run-way. He was asked to hold while the trucks came out and cleaned up

Next Meeting Tuesday, December 18, 2007

7:30 P.M. Schaumburg Regional Airport

Schaumburg Regional Airport is located approximately one mile west of Roselle/Bloomingdale Road on Irving Park Road at Wright Boule-vard. Chapter meetings are always held on the third Tuesday of the month in the terminal building (in the ‘Meeting Room’) at Schaumburg Re-gional Airport. Everyone is welcome. Bring a guest.

November Meeting Notes

The meeting was called to order at 7:32 P.M by John Nowicki. . The min-utes and treasurer’s report were accepted. Kathy Thompson introduced new member, Walt King, and gave a short ex-planation of what our chapter is about. Bob Haney volunteered to host a builder’s night, probably in January. Chuck Soumar reported on Young Eagles and stated that any money do-nated to our Young Eagles program will be put into an interest-bearing ac-count until it’s needed. Glenn LaRocco gave an explanation of the airplane he is preparing that will be displayed on a pedestal at the VFW in West Chicago. The meeting adjourned at 8:11 P.M. followed by the program presented by John Nowicki. Submitted by: Dolores Neunteufel, Secretary

Program Ed Godfrey will be our guest speaker this month. Ed served in WWII, Korea and VietNam and has flown many different air-planes including the F4U Corsair and jets. He’s also had some experience in building and racing cars. This should be a very interesting program.

Chapter Chicks Our next meeting will be in mid-January. The date, time and place will be published in the January newsletter. Our next project will be making centerpieces for chapter dinner which will be in March. We found a cute idea at AirVenture last year and will probably duplicate that as a party favor. We still need an idea for the centerpieces, so if you know of something we can make, let us know.

PRESIDENT: Continued from page 2. His announcement: “Ladies and Gentlemen, I’m afraid there will be a short delay before our arrival. They’ve closed the airport while they clean up what’s left of the last airplane that landed here.” Then there was the time they were flying through turbulence. Some of the passengers became alarmed at how much the wings were bending in the rough air and one of the flight attendants relayed that message to the captain. His announcement: “ Ladies and Gentlemen. I’ve been informed that some of you have noticed our wings bending in the turbulence. In fact, the flight attendant told me that the wings are bending as much as ten feel in the bumps. Well, that’s perfectly normal; there’s nothing to worry about. Our wings are designed to bend as much as thirteen feet at the tips and, as you can see, we’re nowhere near that yet.

December Young Eagles By Chuck Soumar

Well, even with all of my optimism about having great weather in De-cember like we had in October and November, it wasn't meant to be. Our last Young Eagle Rally of the year was weathered out with grey skies and low clouds. But this gives me a chance to say ‘Thank You’ to all the great people of chapter 101 who made our year so enjoyable and so much fun. I first want to thank the board for having the trust in me to take on the
