2011 Charity Ball Ric-
cardo's by the Bridge
Astoria, New York
Dear Guests,
It is my pleasure to welcome you tonight to our annual Charity Ball; and to congratulate all who have
worked this year to make tonight's event a huge success. Our gathering is the culmination of many
months of meetings, planning, selling and organizing. On behalf of alii would like to thank the Knights of
Columbus - Long Island Chapter; the Columbiettes, Ladies' Auxiliaries, Squire circles and everyone who
have given of time, talent and treasure to bring us together. I especially would like to congratulate Donald
Curran, the chairman of the Chapter; Bertrand Derrick, Vice Chairman; Joseph Marino, Charity Drive
Chairman and David Crum, Journal Chairman.
We are pleased to support Calvary Hospice at Lutheran Medical Center of Brooklyn with our charita-
ble efforts this year. The work of Calvary Hospice has greatly impacted on individuals and families at a
most difficult time. The love, care and concern that are offered by the staff of Calvary Hospice embody
the principle of charity which is a hallmark of our Order. It is indeed fitting and proper that Calvary Hos-
pice and the Long Island Knights of Columbus should join together tonight in our 2011 Charity Ball.
I am certain that you will enjoy your evening of fine food, drink and entertainment. Again, I congratulate
and thank all who worked on this event. I thank you for your support; and I pray that our Lord may bless
you; your families; Calvary Hospice and their work; and the Long Island Chapter of the Knights of Colum-
bus.
May God bless you,
S.K. Father Richard Ahlemeyer

Chapter Chairman’s Message
The 2011 Long Island Chapter Charity Drive Dinner Dance celebrates 106 years of ser-vice and support to many charitable organizations, such as Calvary Hospice at Luther-an Medical Center. I would personally like to thank the General Chairman of this years charity drive Joseph Marino and his staff for all their hard work and many hours of unselfish work. A very special thanks to our sister Columbiettes, who worked hard to make sure every payment and chance book were properly recorded right up until dinner time.
Tonight, once again, we are happy to honor and support this years recipient – Calvary Hospice At Lutheran Medic al Center, as they are well known for their good works throughout Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Queens.
As always, we thank all the Councils in Brooklyn and Queens for their unending sup-port in our charitable endeavors. May God bless all the members of the Knights of Columbus and their families.
Fraternally Yours,
Donald L. Curran

Chairman
Charity Drive Chairman’s Message
Dear Brother Knights, Sister Columbiettes, Family and Friends,
On behalf of the members of the Long Island Chapter of Brooklyn and Queens, I would like to welcome every-
one to the 106th Annual Long Island Chapter Charity Ball.
There is no greater gift than charity, the first principle of our order. As we dedicate our efforts this year to sup-
port Calvary Hospital, there is no better feeling than to aid a group that works so hard in helping and bringing care to
those who are afflicted with terminally ill diseases.
They do this daunting task and sometimes depressing work, with professionalism, compassion and dedication,
each and every day with unflinching hope and the idea of despair does not cross their minds under the grimmest circum-
stances.
As Saint Luke writes in the Gospel 4:40:
When the sun was setting, all those who had any that were sick with various
diseases brought them to Him; and He laid His hands on every one of them
and healed them.
So does Calvary Hospital, it places a special touch on each individual they have in their care and bring comfort,
strength and hope to all. I salute all the wonderful caring individuals at Calvary Hospital for a job well done, and may
GOD Bless all your future endeavors bringing the finest medical care to our communities.
I would be remiss if I did not take this time to thank all those from the Knights of Columbus who have made
this Charity Drive a success. I want to thank Donald Curran our Chapter Chairman for giving me this opportunity to
serve as Charity Chairman. I thank both the Brooklyn Chairman John Hardy and Queens Chairman Andres Colon for
their support. I thank all sub-chairman for their support and help, for each of their assignments were critical in putting
this drive together. I also thank our Lady Columbiettes for their hard work of sending meeting letters, tabulating monies
and keeping track of chance books. I thank Father Richard Ahlemeyer our Chaplain for his spiritual guidance through
this entire process.
In closing, The Knights of Columbus should be proud tonight that we as Catholic gentlemen have accomplished
a good deed and have lived up to Father McGivney’s dream, that is to live our lives as Jesus has taught us. Vivat Jesus!

Mr. Joseph Marino
Grand Knight, Knights of Columbus
Long Island Chapter of Brooklyn and Queens
P.O. Box 5356
Astoria, New York 11105
May 4, 2011
Dear Mr. Marino:
Thank you, on behalf of all of us at Calvary Hospital, for your extraordinary generosity and support. Your philanthro-
py has very special significance this year, as we prepare to observe the tenth anniversary of Calvary’s Brooklyn satel-
lite at Lutheran Medical Center, in Sunset Park. Over these ten years, we have been privileged to care for nearly 4,000
patients suffering from advanced cancer, and to provide comfort and support for their loved ones. We are proud to be
part of the great heritage of compassion and caring exemplified by the Knights and Columbiettes.
The satellite, which has been filled to capacity since it opened in October of 2001, has been only the beginning of
Calvary’s presence in Brooklyn. We now offer home hospice care, for people with all illnesses who can be cared for
at home. We have formed affiliations with three excellent Brooklyn nursing homes – Bishop Mugavero, Cobble Hill,
and Lutheran Augustana – where we provide hospice care. We hope to be able to extend our home health care to
Brooklyn residents in the near future.
We offer home health care in Queens, for people with all illnesses who are receiving active treatment. This year, we
have begun a new program focusing on Queens, for home health care patients who can benefit from comprehensive
palliative care – pain and symptom management, social support and counseling, and advance planning – while they are
receiving treatment for their primary illness. We also serve Queens residents through our home hospice, and we pro-
vide hospice care to terminally ill residents of Silvercrest nursing home.
We have two bereavement groups, held at St. Francis College, for adults who have lost a loved one. This spring, we
will replicate our robust bereavement programs for young children and teens, which are a lifeline for our Bronx chil-
dren, in Brooklyn. All of our bereavement groups, whether for children or adults, are free of charge, and open to any-
one who has suffered the loss of a loved one, whether at Calvary or in the community at large.
In addition to direct care, we have brought information about hospice and home care in general, and about Cal-
vary in particular, to congregants of several Brooklyn parishes. We look forward to continuing these programs
in the future.
Christ’s teachings to comfort and care for the sick are the model for Calvary’s core values of compassion, respect for
the dignity of our patients and families, and non-abandonment. Thank you for standing with us at the bedside of our
patients.
Sincerely,
Frank A. Calamari
