What is Characterization?
the process by which the author reveals the personality of the characters.
There are 2 types of characterization:
direct and indirect
![Page 3: Characterization](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022083010/5697bfca1a28abf838ca9630/html5/thumbnails/3.jpg)
Direct Characterization
Direct characterization is when the author TELLS the audience what the personality of the character is.
Example: “The patient boy and quiet girl were both at the
game.”

Indirect Characterization Indirect characterization is when the
author SHOWS things that reveal the personality of the character.
There are 5 different methods of indirect characterization: (STEAL)
Speech, Thoughts,
Effect on other characters, Actions, & Looks.

Speech
What does the character say? How does the character speak?

Thoughts
What is revealed through the character’s thoughts and feelings?
Example: I wish it would stop raining. I am tired of
sitting inside!
![Page 7: Characterization](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022083010/5697bfca1a28abf838ca9630/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
Actions
What does the character do? How does the character behave?
Example: The girl rode the lawn mower through the
house and into the garage.

Effects on Others What is revealed through the character’s
effect on other people? How do other characters feel or behave in
reaction to the character?

The Difference Remember, the difference between
direct characterization and indirect characterization is
TELLING vs. SHOWING
Indirect characterizations are like clues about the characters. WE INFER by using flashpoints.
![Page 11: Characterization](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022083010/5697bfca1a28abf838ca9630/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
How to Use Flashpoints in Characterization:
Make a prediction about what a character will do in a text by relying on observations of what a character is like.
Look for interesting, strange or
revealing flashpoints involving that the character. These flashpoints will serve as evidence for the prediction.
