Hi all and welcome to the June edition of the Community
Newsletter.
This month is a very short and sweet one. Not a lot happening
around town. This time of year is always quieter due to the colder
weather.
I’m afraid my creative juices were not flowing that well this month
so even the front cover is a bit unexciting. It does however represent
what is happening in town at the moment. The farmers are busy
putting the crop in, we are patiently waiting on some more rain and
the mice are certainly about. Too bad the mice weren't as cute as the
ones of the front cover.
It’s been a fairly quiet time in my life as well. Just trying to stay
warm. Tyler heads away on school camp this week so its going to be
very quiet at our house for a few days.
Like I said at the start, the newsletter is pretty small this month
however there is some good articles to read as well as 3 new arrivals
to get clucky over.
I have added the NCFL ladder in this month so you can see how
Charlton is going at this stage of the season.
The Rex theatre has some fantastic movies coming over the next
few months, might see you there.
Hope you all have a great month.

A project six years in the making came to fruition when Trevor Adem,
CEO of the EWHS, officially opened the Gazebo at the Charlton
Hospital on Tuesday the 16th May.
The Hospital Gazebo was a project of the Rotary Club of Charlton.
Funding for the project was provided by Rotary District 9780, who in
2011 provided $40,000 to be spent at the then newly built Hospital.
The money was given in response to the severe flooding which
afflicted the town in January of that year. Following consultation with
Hospital management it was considered that a gazebo for the residents
of the Aged Care Facility would be a suitable project.
Rotarian Phil Stafford was given the role as Special Projects Director
and worked closely with hospital management to build a serviceable
structure. Phil was involved in designing a building that would fit in
seamlessly with the current hospital architecture. Local builder Mark
Boyle constructed the main structure and Rotary working bees were
held to paint, attach the wall panelling and apply the finishing touches.
Trevor Adem, in officially opening the gazebo, spoke of the value of
Service Clubs such as Rotary to their communities. With regard to the
gazebo he felt that it was important that visitors to the facility could
meet with residents in a quieter, more private area, and the gazebo
would provide this locale.
The opening consummately chaired by Charlton Rotary President
Bevan Olive was attended by residents of the Aged Care Facility, Staff
of Charlton EWHS, Friends of the Hospital, Mayor of Buloke Shire,
Councillor David Pollard, CEO of Buloke Shire Lucy Roffey,
Manager of Charlton Campus EWHS, Dallas Coghill, Local GP Dr
Stephen Webb and members of the Rotary Club of Charlton.
A scrumptious morning tea, provided by the campus catering staff,
followed and was enjoyed by all in attendance.

It was time to raise a cup and enjoy the taste sensations at Charlton’s
Biggest Morning Tea last Monday as local Country Women’s
Association (CWA) Branch Cabbaritta hosted the annual Cancer
Council fundraiser.
With a spread of delicacies beckoning, restraint was nigh on
impossible, and clearly showcased why CWA is so revered for its
culinary skills.
But it wasn’t just the pulling power of tasty goodies which captured
the community support. While a special morning tea is a great way to
start the working week, knowing your contribution is aiding cancer
research is also important.
“So many in our communities are touched by cancer” said Cabbaritta
President, Bernice Kenny. “Either directly or indirectly through
family or friends, and this event provides an opportunity for people to
offer support through their donations.”
Decorations of pink and white balloons, dainty china and subtle table
settings greeted attendees, while CWA members took care of
everyone’s needs with their trademark hospitality. A gorgeous stand
cupcakes iced in the Cancer Council colours of turquoise and yellow
and topped with daffodils was a drawcard for the younger attendees.
A featured display of teapots added to the “tea” theme, and drew
plenty of interest, thanks to the variety of styles, shapes and sizes.
With individuals and groups dropping in during the morning the
warm and convivial atmosphere saw morning tea gradually slide on
past “elevenses” towards lunch!
Support for the Biggest Morning Tea tends to bring out the best in
communities, and Bernice was keen to acknowledge the assistance
Cabbaritta had received to make the morning a success.
“Our raffle hamper was donated by Lyn Donaldson,” Bernice said,
“and the delicious scones were made by Bruce Gardiner from local
business, “Timeless Treasures and Tea Rooms”.
The Charlton Neighbourhood House also contributed, presenting a
cheque for $100 to be included with the funds raised from the
morning.
26 businesses showed their support taking up the offer to start their
week with some mouth-watering munchies which had been delivered
earlier by CWA members.
With 9 years of hosting behind them, Cabbaritta was pleased to
announce that this year’s Morning Tea raised a grand total $789.00.
“We are very happy with the response” said Bernice, “and look
forward to making next year’s event even bigger.” Liz Minster (r) Manager of the Charlton Neighbourhood House,
had much pleasure in presenting a cheque to Bev Turner
(Cabbaritta Assistant Secretary) for $100 to aid in the fund
raising for cancer research.
Getting ready to raise a cup in support of cancer research, Cabbaritta
CWA President, Bernice Kenny is pictured preparing for Charlton’s
Biggest Morning Tea last Monday. Behind Bernice is the display of
teapots which featured novelty items, bone china, silver and miniature
tea sets, along with a unique glass-blown teapot.
After enjoying the colourful cupcakes 3 year olds Cody Jenkyn (l) and
Hudson McGrath (r) took time out to play with the balloons.
Delectable cupcakes make by Cabbaritta member Donna McCallum were
an eye-catching feature of Charlton’s Biggest Morning Tea.

Appropriately 60 Rotarians and guests gathered at the East Charlton Hotel on
Thursday evening for the Changeover dinner of the Rotary Club of Charlton. The
night marked 60 years of service to the Charlton and District community, and
among the special guests were District 9780 Governor Elect Ray Herbert from
Mount Gambier, Assistant Governor Rosanne Kava from Swan Hill, together
with rotarians from St.Arnaud and Kerang. Members of the Lions, OASIS and
Probus Clubs of Charlton also attended.
Guest speaker for the evening Ray Herbert congratulated the club on reaching the
60 year milestone and made mention of the positive effect the club has had on the
community. He commented on the part clubs played in the bigger picture of
Rotary International, whose health and educational programs are having a
profound impact in the world. In concluding he presented the club with
certificates from Rotary International and its President John Germ, honouring its
60 years of service.
The event also marked a changing in the leadership of the Charlton Club with
outgoing President Bevan Olive handing over the reins to joint Presidents Wayne
Litton and Elizabeth Whykes. Bevan thanked his club for the support they had
given him through the year and highlighted many of the good works the club had
achieved during his term.
Long serving member Brian Walklate (Brian though not a charter member, was
the club’s first inducted member and brings up 60 years service himself in
August this year) gave a brief resume of the history of the club. Commenting that
the first major project of the club, the Senior Citizens Rooms, was not without
some controversy at the time. Other major projects of the club included air
pageants, car rallies and more recently the hospital gazebo.
The ceremony concluded with Brian and DGE Ray Herbert cutting the 60th birthday
cake.

On 11th June Doug Gretgrix celebrated 20 years as a Starter for
Harness Racing Victoria.
His first meeting was at Geelong on the 11th June 1997. Today he has
travelled to Hamilton for his 3,157th meeting.
During these years he has started at every track in Victoria, including
some that are now closed. Doug has started both Hunter and Victoria
Cups, Ballarat, Bendigo and Mildura Cups as well as those at his
home club of Charlton. He has started the Redwood Carnivals which
are meetings for Trotters, with mostly standing starts. Doug was
called the Country Cup King at one stage as he started most of the
country cups.
It is the people he meets at each meeting that he enjoys. The
stewards, judges, timekeepers, broadcasters, ambos, Clerks of Course,
owners, trainers and drivers. Then there are the Club people. Those
who turn up at every meeting to help their club run their race meeting
smoothly. Those who support their Club, a lot are volunteers, and are
there because they love harness racing.
However Doug started his first race meeting at Charlton in 1980 when
he took over from Barry Roberts and Bevan Olive as Club Started.
In those nearly 40 years he has seen Charlton’s 3 tracks, Moonee
Valley come and go, and Melton as it is today. He has started many
top horses but regrets that he never had the opportunity of starting
Maoris Idol.
If you ever get the chance to have a ride in the Mobile Barrier when
he is starting a race, it is an experience you will never forget. And to
think he has done that for around 19,000 times and is still happy
doing it today.
Well done Doug and congratulations on this milestone.

St Joseph’s School will be celebrating 120 years of Catholic
Education in Charlton on Show weekend 21st & 22nd October.
From Our Lady of the Missions archives:
“In response to an invitation from Fr Kelly, Parish Priest of Charlton,
four sisters came from Perth to take charge of the school. They were
delighted to find such a flourishing school and to meet the bright
happy children who, for many years, had been receiving a Catholic
Education from devoted lay teachers.
In 1930 boarders were taken in and secondary classes began in 1940s.
Their work progressed and numbers increased so that in 1959 a new
school of four classrooms was built and another two were added later.
The Sisters of Our Lady of the Missions withdrew from the parish in
1968 after teaching in its school for 45 years.”
More stories and information of the history of Catholic Education in
Charlton will be displayed at our reunion in October.
Wanted: If you have any photos of school days could you please
hand them to the school or Anne Kenny.
On Wednesday the 17th of May, three Catholic primary cluster schools came
together in Charlton to celebrate Catholic Education Week. The day
commenced with St. Mary's, Donald, St. Patrick's, St. Arnaud and St. Joseph's,
Charlton receiving a traditional Welcome to Country by Jida Gulpilil, a Dja Dja
Wurrung man. Jida explained his culture, his region and played his didgeridoo
to the school children.
The schools then were led to Mass by Jida where Fathers Paul & Eugene
commenced a ceremony based on the Scripture from the Corinthians, 'Strive for
the Greater Gifts.' A theme based on love and sharing. Children planted a
sunflower for each school to take back to their gardens and transplant the gift of
love, hope and nurturing. The day was enjoyed by all schools where new
friendships were made

Charlton Probus Club heard from Kathleen Pamment about her cause
in helping the street dogs that roam around Kathmandu. Starved,
injured, diseased and abused, these dogs are the forgotten animals of
Nepal.
Kathleen grew up in Melbourne close to the Lost Dogs Home which
was founded in 1910. The Lort Smith was founded in 1927. So she
was aware of dogs who need to be rescued. Just 7 years ago Kathleen
adopted a small puppy she named Minnie, and that changed the focus
of her life her completely. She joined a group called Small Paws
Playgroup, and it was through this group that she found out about the
Street Dogs of Kathmandu and Nicole Chauhan. There are 25,000
street dogs there and their life is tough. Friends of Nepal’s Street
Dogs was established by a group bound by the love of dogs and
wanting to help and improve the terrible life of these forgotten,
unwanted dogs.
There are 3 main groups who are making a difference in Kathmandu.
They are Bhaktapur Animal Welfare, Project Humane Nepal and
Street Dog Lovers.
Bhaktapur Animal Welfare provide care and safe havens for the
street dogs Through rescues, emergency treatments, vaccinations and
adoption programs. Project Humane visit schools and orphanages to
educate children about street dogs and pet ownership. Street Dog
Lovers is represented by Romi Lama who cares for and feeds the
dogs around her community. Every day she goes out and feeds the
dogs and takes those that need urgent medical care to a vet.
Here in Australia, the group, as well as fund raising, are making warm
coats for the dogs in Nepal. Kathleen Pamment is working hard to
help this cause and making people aware of this need. All this
involvement for Kathleen has come from the love of a little puppy
named Minnie, who was present at the presentation, 7 years ago and it
is a very rewarding journey.
Charlton Probian Aileen Wolfe, is one of the workers for this cause.
She is busy making warm dog coats for all size dogs and is always
appreciative of donations of discarded fabrics such as polo fleece and
blankets, also any Velcro as well as cottons to help her produce as
many coats as she can. Aileen has created over 200 dog jackets in the
past 3 years (well done Aileen) for the unwanted dogs of Nepal.

$26,500 IN COMMUNITY AND NATIONAL SUPPORT FOR
CHARLTON PARK 2020
The Charlton Park 2020 fundraising campaign received a major boost
this week with two significant contributions. Firstly the Charlton
Urban Fire Brigade made a presentation of $20,000 towards the
campaign. In presenting the cheque to 2020 Secretary and fundraising
committee member, Kim Thompson, Brigade Captain, Craig Walsh
said he was delighted to be able to support the new development at
Charlton Park.”It is so important that the community pull together to
proved the necessary modern facilities for our town and we are proud
to show our support. I urge all community organizations to get behind
this wonderful initiative and donate what they can afford to Charlton
Park.” Craig indicated that the Charlton Urban Fire Brigade expects to
upgrade its own facilities in the near future and “we acknowledge the
support we have always had from the Charlton community.”
The fundraising campaign was further boosted by a donation from a
national company – the Deutsche Group of $6,500. As part of the
campaign, fundraising committee member Kay Cossar has contacted
many National companied and she said that she was delighted that their
support has started to flow. The Deutsche group has banking interests
as well as well known labels such as L’Oreal and Puma.
CHARLTON A&P SOCIETY COMMITS SUPPORT FOR
CHARLTON PARK 2020
The President of Charlton Park 2020, Murray McLean has committed
the organizations support for the 2020 project. “The 137th Charlton
Agricultural and Pastoral Society annual Show will be held on October
21st 2017, at Charlton Park. The Show committee consists of eighteen
enthusiastic members, some of whom are new young members.
We see the new upgraded complex providing high standard facilities
within the building, and also the elevation ensures a new and exciting
dimension for viewing the many events that will take place on the main
sporting ground and trotting track.
This committee supports the fundraising campaign for the proposed
multi-purpose facility at Charlton Park.”
STRONG SUPPORT FROM CLUBS FOR CHARLTON PARK
2020
Charlton sporting clubs continue to show their support for the new
facility at Charlton Park. Charlton Netball Club President, Kim
Fitzpatrick said “ it is fantastic that all park users have come together
to design a facility that will satisfy the needs of all involved. The
current buildings have been in place for a long time and while much
care is taken to preserve them as best as possible they are definitely
showing their age. The netball club is looking forward to having a new
facility with great anticipation. The club is going from strength to
strength having the 13 & Under team finish Runners Up and the A
Grade winning the Premiership in 2016. Sound numbers see the club
field teams in all seven grades, from 13 & Under to seniors. The club
also runs a NetSetGo program from April to July each year with
healthy numbers. The new facility will be a fantastic space to display
club memorabilia and will aid the club encourage new members. It will
also be a great venue to utilise when the club hosts North Central
Netball Association training sessions and functions. I encourage all
netballing families to support the development in any way possible.
In a statement from the Charlton Football Club, President Rod McKee
and senior coach Aaron Walklate issued a joint statement. “Having a
new state of the art facility at Charlton Park would mean so much to us
as a community football club. The facility would enable our players,
supporters, volunteers and the community to enjoy the health and
social benefits of participating in sport and as part of a club in a
comfortable and inviting facility. It gives our members somewhere to
hold important family functions as well as giving the club the same
opportunity. The facility would give the club the chance to grow and
prosper. It gives our current and future generations certainty that
Charlton offers a quality sporting experience for them and their
Families.”
FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN CONTINUES
With 3 weeks to go before the end of the financial year, Campaign
chairman Peter Whykes urged local Charltonians who have not got
around to making a donation yet, to contribute. “ I urge them to make
their donation in the next 3 weeks” he said. “The committee is working
very hard and in the last 2 weeks has made contact by email or letter
with over 600 ex-residents of the town”. Already donations are coming
in with $1000 from both John Carmody and Peter Noonan, $200 from
Ron Bartlett and $20 from Kathie Secombe and we thank them for
their donations.
Donations in the last week include $2000 from Peter and Robyn
Soulsby, former residents of Charlton. In making their donation,
Robyn wrote, “ Good luck with the fundraising for this wonderful
project”.
There was also a$100 donation from former residents Tony and Teresa
Lane, all the way from Western Australia as well as a contribution
from the Charlton Croquet club and notification of a doubling of the
contributions from 2 of the park users, Charlton Hockey Club and the

Thank You
We wish to say a big thanks you to all the wonderful
people in our community who have so generously
supported the fundraisers which have been held for Ian.
Speacial thanks to all the businesses and local people
for the generous donations of money, vouchers and
items for the spinning wheels and raffles.
Thank you to The Charlton Club, Buloke Shire Staff,

at Charlton Hospital,
Thanks also to all those who have visited Ian, made
phone calls, given food, gifts, delivered wood, mowed
lawns and helped around our home. Your kindness and
support over the past 7 months has been amazing and
very much appreciated.
