Your Associate Priest Writes Dear Friends, The wedding season is approaching and part of my
responsibility during a Marriage Service is to give a short address, often on the theme of the response “I will”. As the couple pledge themselves to each other I reassure them of God’s “I will”. I believe that marriage is God’s ideal relationship uniquely between a man and a woman. (I’m with the Archbishop of York, Dr John Sen-tamu, on this subject.) Marriage is wonderful, beautiful, and used in the Bible as the model of the relationship between Jesus and the Church. But marriage is not for everyone - perhaps through chosen, enforced or circumstantial singleness. Neither can it be denied that there are marriages that have turned into a personal “hell” for one or both parties - marriages that end in divorce. Then the Church (and the many excellent secular counselling agencies) needs to be alongside the couple doing all in its power to bring about reconciliation. But sometimes a married relationship breaks down where there is deep emotional and romantic love – but little real commitment associ-ated with those words “I will”. That commitment is partly a legal re-quirement, and also a promise made before God - and one I believe echoed by God with the promise of his “I will” to bless the man and woman as a newly created single entity. That’s the big difference be-tween a Church wedding and one in the Registry Office - a loving commitment blessed and strengthened by God. I’ve used the word commitment many times in this letter. It is a word key in so many areas of our lives - yet it is a word that can frighten us. A commitment to today’s children changes from “They are a nuisance and a disturbance” to “I’ll be there to welcome them at a family ser-vice.” A commitment to the Church means that the loose change in the plate is replaced by the weekly Envelope Scheme or a Standing Or-der, offering a generous* amount (Gift Aided where possible, and topped up when returning from a holiday!). And a commitment in Christian marriage is summed up in the words “I will” which change an open relationship into “one flesh” joined and blessed by God with his “I will”. Jesus used this very intimate relationship of marriage as an exam-ple of the faithful and unifying love between himself and us, his Church. Let us take this analogy seriously and reflect on our loving commitment to God, and our lasting commitments to each other. I will …. will you? Yours, committed to you, Malcolm * Generosity is a measure or yardstick of our love of God and his Church … and as a willing gift offering, not a half-hearted collection!

work in the shop in 2012. However, there will have to be reduced hours of
opening, so if there is still anyone with two and a half hours a month to
spare, please contact me. The emergency meeting on Friday 23 March will
be in the Oak Room of the Parish Hall in Caldbeck at 12.30pm, to decide on
the future of the shop and perhaps draw up a new rota. Bring a shared lunch
and meet those who are committed to the idea of a fairer world and to discuss
the proposals about our shop which will include opening again as usual on
Monday 2 April. Lynette 016974 78544

WENDY MACLEAN Wendy died at the end of November last year after a long spell in hospital
and then in a nursing home near to her family in Edinburgh. For many years she and her late husband Bruce lived at Sebergham where Wendy was an active member of the community and a regular member of our Church family. Some of Wendy's family hope to be with us at our morn-ing service at St. Mary's, Sebergham, on Sunday March 4th when we will take the opportunity to thank God for all that Wendy meant to us. We would be delighted if you were able to join us.

BIBLE STUDY AT THE RECTORY - AKA BREWERY HOUSE! Starting on Monday 23rd April (I know it’s a long way away, but you are all such busy people!) there will be a twice monthly (2nd, 4th and 5th Mondays) Bible Study at the Rectory in Caldbeck. It will be at 7.30pm, very informal, sitting in comfy chairs, lasting about an hour, and concluding with tea/coffee etc. The theme each week will be the previous Sunday’s Bible readings giving an opportunity to explore them in more depth, and ask the questions that are not possible in the context of a sermon. HOW-EVER, attending the Sunday’s service is not a prerequisite of com-ing along as we will be starting our reflections from scratch and un-biased view points would be greatly appreciated. It is fun when people ask where I live and I say “Brewery House”. It’s the name of a place where I hope you will be refreshed in mind and heart, as well as the body. Why not give it a try and put the first date in your diary? Malcolm Riches

The Third Lunch@Millhouse At our third lunch David Kerry spoke about some of the thrills and spills of being a
road safety officer for Cumbria over the last 20 years, the last ten of them as the
senior Road Safety Officer. He kept people amused with a quiz about road signs
and how much we thought we knew! Thank you very much David.
Philippa Groves and Alison Ostell again made and served a delicious lunch which
was enjoyed by 27 local residents. The willing hands of Dorothy Knowles made
light work of the dishes and then tables and chairs disappeared as if by magic ... and
willing helpers. Our next lunch is on Wednesday 28th March, as places are limited,
booking in advance is essential. Please contact Philippa Groves on 016974 78555 to
book your place at least by Monday 26th March.

Fellview School News February 2012
There have been plenty of sporting activities at school, with some of the Juniors
participating in a Cross Country race and gymnastics training.
We continue to welcome Malcolm, Lee and the team from the Open the Book
project into school to lead assemblies.
Our main topic this term is the project on The Spectral Army of Souther Fell.
We are using this theme as a basis of a course for parents working with their
children under the guidance of an experienced teacher from the Adult Literacy
Team. The aim is to give parents the opportunity to use speaking and listening
and first hand experiences to help inspire children to write. On 31st January,
Stephen Matthews, who wrote a book about the legend, came into school to
launch the topic by talking about the story and the sightings of the Spectral
Army. In the afternoon, all of the children and some parents walked up Faulds
Brow to get an idea of what it is like on the summit of a fell. The weather was
crisp and cold, which made walking easier on the ground. Unfortunately, the
weather was not very clear, so we could not get an all round view. At the top,
we practised marching in rows of five abreast, as the army reputedly did. It was
not easy.
Back in school, all of the children have been writing about the Spectral Army
and more activities are planned around the subject. Everyone is enjoying the
topic immensely and, so far, some fantastic newspaper reports and recounts
have been written.
The Nursery continues to flourish. Some more children have been admitted this
term and our full day sessions are proving to be very popular. A DVD sale is
planned as a fund raising activity, so if you have any unused DVDs, suitable for
children, please pop them into school.
Our next Community Lunch will be held on 6th March. Contact school on
78437 if you would like to book a place. A two course meal with coffee/tea and
biscuits is £4.50. Breakfast Club for pupils is available daily and, on the last
day before half term, we had a Big Breakfast, serving sausage sandwiches and
croissants as well as the usual cereals and toast. A bargain at £1!

Notes. Our average rainfall for January over a ten year period is 111.56

corded rainfall for January is 2.70 mm (0.10 ins) in 1997, and the
highest recorded rainfall is 223.10 mm (8.78 ins) recorded in 2008.
It is interesting to note that the total rainfall for year in 1997 was
858.24 mm (33.78 ins) and the total rainfall for the year in 2008 was
1140.10mm (44.87 ins) so I will leave it to the reader to predict the
total rainfall for 2012!

Notes. January has been a warm month and we recorded frost on 9 days
during the month, of which five days were consecutive, 13th – 17th &
then only again on the last four days of the month, 28th -31st. Again
it is interesting to remember that the winter of 2010/11 had heavy
snowfalls and extreme cold but it all occurred in November and De-
cember and by January it was a lot warmer only a few degrees down
on January 2012 as you will see from the figures above.
Wind
The average wind speed for January was 6.1 mph and we recorded a
high on Tuesday 3 January of 60.9 mph at 07.09 hrs. The dominant

CAFS Report for March 2012
This month’s film is shown on Fri 23rd March at 7.30pm in Caldbeck
Village Hall. The Illusionist is a French animation made by Sylvain
Chaumet, who previously made the Award-winning Belleville Rendez-
vous. This is a much more subtle type of animation than the current
computer-enhanced efforts. It is hand drawn and artistically rendered.
There is minimal dialogue so you don’t even have to worry about sub-
titles. It was released in 2010, in colour, cert PG and lasts 80 mins. The
story is based on an unmade script by Jacques Tati and is Chaumet’s
homage to the great French comic actor.
Tatischeff is an old-fashioned, rabbit out of hat magician, whose career
is on the wane in the late 1950s, as TV and rock and roll take over from
traditional variety entertainment. He is on a tour of pubs and halls in the
Western Isles when he meets Alice, a girl working as a chambermaid in
a hotel. She longs for a more exciting life and follows the magician on
his return to Edinburgh.
He feels obliged to look after her, treating her as an adopted daughter,
but as his career fades, he takes on menial jobs to support them both.
Meanwhile, Alice meets a young man of her own age.
All this takes place against a beautiful, artistic depiction of Edinburgh
50yrs ago. You will certainly recognise the streets and landmarks of the
city. It is a wistful story with a touch of melancholy, as an era and a rela-
tionship start to fade.
It is not lacking in gentle humour, from the rabbit with attitude to the
wry observation of Scottish character and habits.

OIL SYNDICATE SCHEME
Around forty people have now signed up to a Caldbeck/Hesket Newmarket
area oil syndicate. Allan Stobart is the supplier; he is very keen to help and
will offer a discount per litre on bulk orders. This discount will be dependent
on the size of the order at the time but will be available for everyone making an
order regardless of the individual amount ordered, although a minimum order
of 500 litres is preferred.
These orders will probably be placed quarterly, by the co-ordinator of the
scheme who will contact each member of the scheme to take orders. There is
no obligation for members to order every time, just when their personal need
arises. An added benefit is that individuals will not have the hassle of phoning
Stobarts themselves. Existing customers of Stobarts will be able to continue
with whatever payment arrangements already exist; new customers will be
given a choice of payment terms.
It is still not too late to sign up and full details will be provided to you at the
time.
If you are interested in joining the scheme or just wish to know more, please
contact : Rosemary Bailey – scheme co-ordinator,
[email protected]; tel: 016974 78575.
Please give your details, including email [if possible] and telephone number.
Valentines Quiz at the Old Crown, Hesket Newmarket A very successful event was held on Sunday 12 February. Thank you to
Keith and Edna for offering to host this evening. In all £201 was raised to
help towards the costs of maintaining and insuring the Play Area in Hesket
Newmarket. A great result and a good evening. A big thank you to all who
supported us and pitched their brains against friends and neighbours!

CASTLE SOWERBY PARISH COUNCIL The bi-monthly meeting of Castle Sowerby Parish Council met on the 19th Janu-
ary 2012.The Chairman, Mr. John Foster welcomed Parish Councillors. County
Councillor- Mr. Bert Richardson and three members of the public.
Highways. Mr. R. Lawley – area Highways transport manager for Eden has
stated that no additional road planning's are available to improve the Coal Road at
the present time, he had also investigated the flooding at Sour Nook, the drains at
Sour Nook Inn were in good order, the problem seems to be caused by several
problems, the valley grates were silted up, a considerable amount of water was
coming into the highway from nearby fields, since investigating the sucking out
of the drains to date no flooding has taken place. Flooding is also a problem on
the road leading from Newlands to Hesket Newmarket where gravel and soil
washing down the steep hill causing flooding as the drains appear to be blocked.
The Clerk was instructed to notify the highways about this problem, as water
freezes causing ice at a very bad bend.
Finance. The Parish Council has set the precept for 2012—2013 at £1600.00,
same as last year, it was decided to make a payment of £ 200.00 to the Northern
Fells Group. A recycling payment of £ 179.13 was received. The recycling pay-
ments enable the Council to keep the precept low.
Diamond Jubilee. It was decided that Councillors would find out how many
children are attending Primary School in the Parish with a view to donating a
Commemorative mug to each.
Planning Planning application decided by Eden District Council for Fisher of
Thackmire House Stables----Approved. New Application to the Parish Council--
-Wind Turbine for Messers Stalker, Ratten Castle, Sowerby Row for a 20metre
Mast Turbine, Councillor Stalker retired from the meeting while his plan was
discussed, it was agreed to support this application as it was felt it was for farm
use. Another application was received from Councillor Richard Little who also
retired from the meeting, while plans were discussed for a roof over a cattle yard
to prevent rain water entering the a slurry system, this was also supported by the
Parish Council.
Parish Plan Councillor Philippa Groves had attended an Eden Rural meeting
at Skelton. She also presented a DVD on how another parish had set up their Par-
ish Plan, she said this would be a Community Plan and not necessarily a Parish
Plan, it was decided to discuss this at the next meeting, The Chairman thanked
Philippa for her presentation of this subject. County Councillor Bert Richardson
gave a report on the County Council matters, he was then thanked by the Chair-
man for a very interesting report.
District Councillor A letter was read from Mr. Kevin Beattie who sent his
apologies, as he was unable to attend.
Broadband. A request was received for finance from Northern Fells Broad-
band, the Council decided at the present time due to the rapidly changing proce-
dures for Broadband, also to the current paucity of funds, it was decided not to
contribute at this time.

Sebergham WI Report February 2012 Fourteen members arrived carrying family heirlooms and treasured china for the expert
eye of our speaker, Mr Howard Naylor. Margaret Mattinson, president, welcomed eve-
ryone and plans for our birthday party in March were made and menu choices chosen.
The County News was read and two talented members thought they would enter the
competition to design a Diamond Jubilee card for Her Majesty the Queen.
An outing to Wensleydale and Richmond, the formation of craft clubs and an after-
noon tea with a flower demonstration caught our attention. Four invitations had been
received from WIs to attend their guest nights and these have been enthusiastically
accepted. It was decided to ask guests to our September meeting when we have a
speaker with rather a chocolate theme to tickle our taste buds! Margaret Mattinson
then introduced Howard Naylor an Auctioneer and valuer. Howard had worked for
David King for 22 years, where he had started by sweeping the floors. He certainly
swept up a lot of knowledge as after a further 10 years with Harrison & Hetherington
he has set up on his own as a valuer of antiques. We were then intrigued as Howard
described and valued all the brought items. A knuckle duster caused some amusement
but the owner assured us it was not now used! A sovereign scale, a magnificent pranc-
ing horse, an Egyptian lamp and many different types of china were assessed. The
only item to cause a furrowed brow was what looked like a gentleman’s shaving mug,
but so finely decorated with delicate flowers, it must surely have been made for a lady!
We had thoroughly enjoyed seeing our treasures valued and Howard was thanked by
Christine Rule. While enjoying refreshments prepared by Christine Rule, Doreen Ward
and Margaret Watson, Howard was quizzed by lots of members on some of their other
antiques at home. Mr Naylor judged the competition from amongst the items brought
and 1st was Poppy Hollins-Gibson with Anne Ludlam 2nd. Poppy Hollins-Gibson
Sebergham & Welton Parish Council Parish Clerk : Ms P L Gauntlett
54 Inglewood Crescent Tel 01228 534565
Carlisle CA2 6JL E mail [email protected] www.seberghamwelton.org.uk
The Parish Council met on 1 February in Welton Village Hall. Several residents of the
Parish attended the meeting to voice their concerns about the planning application for a
storage facility at Sebergham Castle House. It is felt that the proposed building is too
large, not in keeping with its surroundings and visible from the road. The Parish Coun-
cillors agreed with these remarks and they will be passed on to Allerdale Planning dept
for consideration. The SIDS machines have been taken off the road for the winter.
The Highways stewards are hoping to do some work on the road alongside the river
but the money will not be available until the new financial year. Work has started on
the Cumbrian Way at Dentonside, a 400m stretch of path is being drained. Earth mov-
ing equipment is due to arrive at Parkside Quarry to start work in the next couple of
weeks. A business plan for the Northern Fells Broadband group has been submitted to
DEFRA. It is hoped that trials could begin in the area in the final quarter of this year if
everything goes to plan. The ranger from the Red Squirrel group has been trapping and
killing grey squirrels, there has been a 60% increase in the grey kills in 2011 (1323)
and a 70% increase in red sightings. The precept for the coming year was set at £3400,
a £100 increase on last year. The Parish have been able to keep the precept at £3300
for the previous 3 years, the increase is needed due to increasing costs. The next meet-
ing of the Parish council will be on 28 March. Ms P L Gauntlett: Parish Clerk 23

what it is possible to achieve by purely voluntary efforts which aim to “make a dif-
ference”.
At home, Ann stressed the importance of taking part in meetings outside the branch.
Deanery and Diocesan meetings are opportunities for us to learn more about wider
aspects of our membership of this world-wide family.

CALDBECK CAROL SINGING 2011 Once again our apologies to those we did not reach on our carol singing evening in
December, and our thanks to those whose generosity enabled us to reach a total of
£309 from our collecting boxes and related donations. We divided this between the
three children’s charities NSPCC, NCH and SCF.
To singers and drivers and all others who helped in any way thanks again on behalf
of the three children’s charities that are supported.
It was particularly nice to have some new singers joining in this year and equally to
see familiar faces again.
Next Christmas we would hope to visit some of the areas we missed, depending on
singers available. So come along then if you can, you will be most welcome.
David and Antoinette Ward, and Hilary Mattinson.

DIAMOND JUBILEE I have lost track of three Caldbeck Parish Magazines dated March, April and May 1977. They contain accounts of the preparations for the Queen’s Silver Jubilee celebrations in Caldbeck. I may yet find them but, if anyone has copies, I know the committee arranging the Diamond Jubilee celebrations would be very glad to see them.

Westward Flower Club Demonstration on 27th February
by Margaret Nicholson
Susan Stamper gave a very interesting and skilful demonstration entitled Winters
Treasures. Susan was introduced by Shirley Martin.
The first arrangement included greenery of eucalyptus and phoenix palm. The flowers
were peach lilies, pale peach gerberas Mario roses finished off with orange twigs. The
next arrangement was done in a black vase with a long clear stem. This included phoe-
nix palm, eucalyptus, aspidistra leaves, bear grass, green blooms, orange lilies, pale
peach gerberas, mimosa, finished off with flat orange canes.
The third arrangement was representing a winter walk. This had black glitter twigs up-
right with green blooms, orange roses and peach lilies inside the twigs. The greenery at
the bottom of the arrangement included phoenix palm and eucalyptus. This was a very
modern and unusual arrangement. No 4 flower arrangement had a beautiful yellow
orchid as the centerpiece. This had aspidistra leaves, orange twigs and bear grass to
complete it. Susan then did two hand tied bunches with the remaining flowers using
spring flowers.
Prizes were won by Margaret Graham, Joyce Nanson, Dorothy Thompson, Shirley
Bragg, Marjorie Ballantyne, June Kitchen and Margaret Millican.
The colour theme was mainly orange. We hope everyone will think about Hospice at
Home Marmalade Festival fund raising event. The next meeting is a demonstration by
Judith Jarman on Monday 27th February at 7.30 pm.
Caldbeck Mothers’ Union Our first meeting of each year traditionally begins with a short service, and, this year it
was led by the Reverend Walter Wade. He took as his theme the subject of “light” and,
especially from his experience as a sailor, the light from lighthouses which, on a clear
day, can become beacons of safety many, many miles away. He mentioned in particular
the Eddystone lighthouse, a magnificent example constructed with infinite skill and
labour centuries ago, on a ridge of fearsome rocks. Not only does its light tell ships
their exact position as they travel up the channel, but gives them the direction they must
follow to reach the welcome of “home”. He compared this function to that of Jesus “the light of the world” who guides us on
our journey through life. We, who aspire to follow his example, should live our lives so
that they reflect this light on those we meet.
Following the service, Ann Wade gave a resume of our programme last year and em-
phasised how much we had learnt about the work of the world-wide M.U. from the
different speakers. She strongly recommended using the booklet “Families World-
wide” which, for each week, describes the outreach work of one diocese - anywhere in

BABES IN THE FELLS : Caldbeck Players’ Pantomime (January 2012) A Report (not a Review)
There were fifty in the cast with ages ranging from 7 to 96. The dialogue and the lyrics (sung to familiar tunes) were written by Teresa Richardson. The songs were accompa-nied by Lorraine Gash on the keyboard. The setting was Caldbeck. One main theme was the attempted rustling of sheep in the form of the three shapely ewes known as the Babes (Karen Atkinson, Phillipa Groves and Carol Hine) by two villains, the Broth-ers Grimm (Jonty Crosland and Geoff Hine) aided by Rambo, the handsomest ram in the North (Ewan Macfadzean). The attempt was eventually thwarted by the Young Farmers (Samantha Bell, Matthew Horne, Joseph Horne, Ross Macfadzean, Amy Rob-inson and Rosie Robson) assisted by two inefficient Community Support Officers (Alastair Macfadzean and Kieran Macfadzean). Matthew Horne as Robin Hoodie and Samantha Bell as Marian Maiden also provided the romantic interest. The other main theme was the arrival in Caldbeck to take up a role as country squire of Lord Sweetener (Bob Whitson) a businessman from South London who soon adopted the local Jimmy Quipment (Harry Bolton) as his faithful apprentice. Madama Bobba Clarka (Bob Clarke from Midtown in drag) adapted the Lambeth Walk to become the Codbeck Walk and performed it with Lord Sweetener and Madama Timotea Cartemala (Tim Cartmell, also in drag). Commentary on all the action, sometimes acerbic, was supplied by the WI Ladies (Bridget Archer and Pat Shaw) and the Villagers (Jennifer Collard, Sarah Lewin, Barbara Riches, Malcolm Riches and Hannah Smaile). Wallie the Collie (Toby Collard) ran round the stage and hall whining and barking vigorously and herding flocks. Periodically Beth Robson and Helena Watson dashed on to the stage dressed as jesters to tell jokes as stand up comedians. The beautician (Barbara Mitchell as herself) dolled up the three Babes in their fleeces for the final scene in preparation for Hesket Show while a Baa-rber Shop Quartette (David Kerry, Peter Krebs, David Ward and Ken Woolfenden) serenaded the audience with Baas to the music of Baa-ch. And all ended happily under the benevolent gaze of Lord Sweetener in coronet and ermine apart from the Brothers Grimm who remained in disgrace. Stars of the show were the seventeen Fellview pupils who made frequent appearances on stage throughout and also sang and performed set pieces. All had lines of dialogue to speak. Nathan Armstrong, Kelsey Hedley, Arran Horne, Martha Hudson, Holly Macfadzean, Josh Pigg, Megan Steadman, Jonny Trotter and Bob Watson did so as Village Children with Kelsey Hedley and Arran Horne also acting as Whippers to en-courage audience hisses, boos and aahs. Emma Glendinning, Zoe Glendinning, Robert Lewin, Laura Smaile, Molly Steadman, Joe Trotter and Cameron Wilson as Lambs and Katherine Lewin as Black Lamb played, scampered, bleated and entertain-ingly ran amok. The onstage performers had the support of about 35 production, stage construction, back stage, lighting, sound and front of house staff without whom the production could not have taken place. They all enjoyed it and hope the audience (which numbered about 400 over the three nights) also did. They seemed to anyway. From the proceeds a donation of £300 has been made to the Caldbeck Diamond Jubi-lee Fund. The next production of Caldbeck Players is Great Expectations on 20, 21 and 22 March.

Notes from Caldbeck Parish Council’s meeting of 16th January District and County Councillor Duncan Fairbairn reported that Watery Lonning is
nearing the end of its consultation process for closure and will be closed soon, and
that following complaints and inspection by Highways the Contractors are returning
to redo the Whelpo to Parkend road free of charge.
Local gritting of priority 3 minor roads. The Clerk reported still no progress with
this scheme. She had emailed MP Rory Stewart twice to ask for his support. Clerk to
ask CALC to check whether other Parish Councils are in the same position of being
refused a supply of the parish salt/grit until the weather deteriorates and to consider
joint approaches to the County Council for a review of this inexplicable decision.
(Since the meeting we have discovered via CALC that we are one of nine parishes
wanting to grit some of our minor roads but being stymied by County’s refusal to re-
lease the grit. At the time of writing, 11th February, the County has at last agreed to
deliver a supply of grit/salt to the parish but we are awaiting its actual delivery, and
we also await the outcome of Rory Stewart MP’s appeal to Jill Stannard, CCC Chief
Executive, on our and Ousby parish’s behalf. We want to be in a position to at least
grit Hesket Lonning and the centres of the two villages).
The Green verge - vehicle damage, Caldbeck. The Clerk reported that she had writ-
ten and spoken to Westport Ltd about the damage but they explained that they only
supplied windows to Home Housing’s contractors and did not themselves visit the
site. The Clerk will contact Home Housing to whom she has also sent a letter about
the problem.
Unstable footbridge Hesket Newmarket reported to the LDNP Ranger and repaired.
Other matters regarding Parish maintenance: a. LDNPA plan to replace the maple
tree on Hesket Newmarket Green and to do the other planned works on trees there in
the next couple of months. b. The Clerk to report the following matters to Highways:
1. water seeping up through tarmac and ice forming across the road at Gillfoot, Pas-
ture Lane, 2. Gutter opposite Brooklyn, Ratten Row, needs digging out, 3. the cul-
vert at the bottom of Tanner Lonning is blocked under the road so water is running
across the road towards the pond, 4. potholes on the back Green road, Caldbeck, to
be reported again, 5. repairs are needed to the Faulds road - severe potholes, 6. Wath
Brow drainage has still not been attended to – water running down the road and
forming ice.
Consultation by County on Household Waste Recycling Centres. Clerk to write
and object to proposed closure of Wigton Centre. To suggest reduced opening hours
instead and explain concerns about the likely dumping of waste on the Common if the
HWRC is closed.
Antoinette Ward, Clerk to the Council. Tel 016974 78220.

ROSLEY WI Mrs Jean Harper-Tarr presided over the January meeting which was a meet and natter
night. The new green tablecloth with the WI motif and dates 1927-2012 for the presi-
dents table, was on show and Angela Gibson was thanked for all her hard work making
and embroidering it. Angela also collected subscriptions (Rosley now having 30 mem-
bers). Recently Rosley won £100 in the county 200 club. The resolutions for the
21
national AGM in London in May were voted on.
Then everyone enjoyed a cup of tea and lovely home made mince pies, provided by
Jean Harper-Tarr. Jean also produced a quiz to test members grey matter. The high-
light of the evening was a few games of bingo with Lindsey Watts acting as caller.
The secretary was asked to write to our MP regarding analogue radio being with-
drawn and that the replacement with digital is a poor substitute.
Members please note February’s competition is for a home made “valentine’s card”
and “Sandy Brow” group are the hostesses. There is a committee meeting on Mon-
