It is a voice that has taken Lane around the world, performing major festivals in the US, Canada, UK and Australia, and touring with the likes of Billy Bragg, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Old Crow Medicine Show, Neko Case, Cat Power, Ruthie Foster and The Moody Blues. The bespectacled multi-instrumentalist and composer from Iceland had already been around the world and back with her band, Seabear, before she discovered her own voice. Now celebrated for her intricate, spellbinding vocals, Sóley has re-emerged as a charismatic storyteller who has created her own dream-like wonderland.
Sóley plays piano, guitar, organ and percussion, creating enchanting indie pop. Since the release of her debut album, We Sink, Sóley has wowed audiences with her shimmering songs. The intimate, velveteen Spiegeltent is the perfect venue to catch this talented Icelander before she becomes a main-stage regular.
From the TSO Chorus come this bold group of twenty-four choristers who push the boundaries of choral performance. For this special Spiegeltent show they are coupling two unlikely bedfellows: chorus and electric guitar!
Chorus Director June Tyzack has partnered her ensemble with Baroque specialist, soprano, Helen Thomson and guitar virtuoso Zane Banks, winner of ABC Limelight’s Best Newcomer Award 2011, for an invigorating and unexpected program. Exquisite classic choral writing will contrast with spoken choruses, bizarre incantations, vocal percussion imitations of Indian Mridangam drums and Latin texts will be performed alongside searing Eric Clapton-esque electric guitar explosions. It’s choral, it’s electric and it’s extreme!

Experience the Polar Regions as never before through the eclectic artistry of composer, author, musician, and National Geographic 2014 Emerging Explorer Paul D. Miller, aka DJ Spooky. Long a legend in the hip hop world as a master turntablist, Miller is a sonic artist who hears music in almost everything; from visual forms and economic theory to the great outdoors.
In December 2007 and January 2008, Miller undertook an expedition to Antarctica to shoot a film and create an acoustic portrait of the rapidly changing continent. This led to his celebrated book The Book of Ice, being published in 2011 and the album Of Water and Ice in 2013. Then, in summer 2014 and sponsored by the environmental organisation Sierra Club, Miller took a trip to the Arctic Circle that inspired the second volume of music, Arctic Rhythms.
With this Spiegeltent performance Miller, accompanied by a violinist and a cellist, will create an evocative multimedia trip to the Arctic landscape for the audience, juxtaposing images with live and recorded hip hop, electronic, and minimalist music to create an unforgettable experience.

Whether playing the tin can, the jack-in-the-box or the toy hammer and rattle, Leng Tan fulfills her mentor John Cage’s philosophy that you can make music with just about anything. Suitable for ages 8 to 108, Clangor! is a diminutive music-theatre experience of nostalgia and humor performed exclusively on all manner of toy instruments. From toy pianos and bicycle bells to a hand-cranked music box, Margaret Leng Tan treats them as real instruments in keeping with the French artist Marcel Duchamp’s statement, “poor tools require better skills.”
Since moving to New York, Leng Tan has become a major force within the American avant-garde, as well as being the first woman to earn a doctorate from Julliard. Who knew that toys have so much potential?!

POLLAK’S CREATIVITY ShINES…COMbINING COMEDY AND MUSIC MAKING.hong Kong standard
Watch in wonder and listen in amazement as Linsey Pollak uses electronic wizardry neatly combined with DIY ingenuity, to play an array of surprising instruments such as the saxillo, the rubber glove bagpipe and Mr Curly – a contra-bass clarinet made from plastic garden hose. Using these instruments as well as voice, balloons, melodica, jawharps and a carrot clarinet he cunningly creates layers of delightful music. Linsey is guaranteed to have audiences bopping in their seats.

FAMILY
Tasmania’s revered contemporary puppet theatre company, Terrapin, joins the Spiegeltent family program with their much-loved production Boats.
Written by Finegan Kruckemeyer, Boats is classic storytelling with skilful physical performance. The audience experiences the world transformed around them using everyday objects found in a boat’s galley. Each scene is a unique and highly inventive use of space and puppetry; a boat is made from a piece of bread; an island is made from a hat; a circus is made from a jacket and a storm is made in a teacup.
Winner of the 2012 Helpmann Award: Best Presentation for Children, Boats is a moving story with a twist at the end which will leave a lump in your throat and a smile on your face.

After touring the globe for over two decades, world-renowned performers The Chipolatas finally land in the Hobart Spiegeltent with their universally acclaimed show Gentlemen of the Road. Transcending trends, capturing hearts and crossing boundaries, these three actors/musicians/clowns work seamlessly together in a celebratory performance where circus meets theatre and live music.
Gentlemen of the Road is a story without words – moments of inspired stillness, physicality and dynamism, rhythmic squeezebox, breakbeats and ballads, wit and charm - performed with impeccable timing.
For this dynamic family of entertainers the journey has no destination, the journey is a celebration! Welcome one and all. Sit down and enjoy the show.
