Clare Frankl-Bertram has recently moved from running her own architectural practice back to, her first love, ceramics. Triggered by an increasing desire to have a hands-on engagement with the stuff of making, her work seeks to use the memory, strengths and vulnerabilities of clay to embody ideas of place and displacement in her pottery.
Pottery is generally considered to be a utilitarian practice concerned with containers made from clay. Potters, the makers of pots are part of a craft tradition which was absorbed and then almost obliterated by industrialisation. More recently in the era of novelty consumerism respect for the slow iterative acquisition of craft skills has diminished. Clare’s work deliberately embraces the value of craftsmanship.
‘For me it is precisely the labour intensive work processes in clay that make it a legitimate form of self expression. and as such ceramics deserves a valued place in contemporary art practice.’
‘Hand building allows me to slowly find the space which is enclosed or implied by its clay carapace. The form of each piece comes from this process of space making and exposure. The pieces to be shown at the Paul Mcpherson Gallery are a mix of sculptural vessels and anthropomorphic forms.’
