WelcomeClearfield® is a unique system for oilseed rape that offers unique benefits. A combination of vigorous, hybrid varieties and powerful, post emergence herbicides, which when used together, can revolutionise your approach to OSR management.
Using conventional breeding techniques, hybrid varieties have been developed that work directly with our Clearfield® herbicides. When a Clearfield® herbicide is applied to a Clearfield® variety, indicated by a CL suffix, it delivers powerful, broad-spectrum weed control in the most flexible way. Clearfield® herbicides like Cleranda® and Cleravo® control the widest range of broad-leaf weeds, including ‘problem’ brassica weeds and volunteer OSR. However, Clearfield® delivers much more than improved weed control; it offers greater confidence, flexibility and control of your OSR crop.

For greater confidence, control and flexibility of your OSR, choose Clearfield®
Given its notorious unpredictability and the challenges growers face with establishment and weed control, we recognise that growing a viable and profitable OSR crop is not something that comes easy these days. Yet with very few viable break crop alternatives, coupled with the potential to make a rewarding return, we think OSR is a crop worth standing by.
We think we have the solution to help fulfil its potential. It’s called Clearfield®.
Introduction to Clearfield®
“ The results were phenomenal. I have never seen anything like it! The Cleranda® annihilated the charlock as well as the volunteer rape from previous crops, wild-oats, brome and even severely checked the black-grass. It just wiped out everything - apart from the Clearfield® rape itself. Luke Hardy, Agronomist

Take control of these key weeds with the unique Clearfield® system
Volunteer OSR Erucic acid 57% in HEAR OSR
Description: Clearfield® is the only system which can remove unwanted volunteer rape within a crop of oilseed rape.
Why control volunteer OSR? 1. Helps achieve an optimum plant canopy - essential for maximising yields2. Helps achieve a purer oil sample - especially where HEAR OSR has been grown in the past
Charlock Erucic acid 32%
Description: Charlock is a 20-200cm high, dark-green to purplish hairy annual; it can be very variable in form, with irregularly toothed leaves. The pale yellow four-petalled flowers occur at the top of the flowering spike.
Prevalent soil types: found on well-aerated and well-watered but drained, alkaline-rich soils, which have a high organic matter content.
Hedge mustard Erucic acid 21%
Description: It is an annual or over-wintering annual, 30-60cm tall, with almost horizontal branching stems and deeply cut spear-shaped and lobed leaves. The yellow flowers are very small with four petals, in flat-topped flowerheads.
Prevalent soil types: likes dry, loose, nutrient-rich loams and sandy, stony soils.
Runch (Wild Radish) Erucic acid 27%
Description: Annual, growing to 1m tall, with rough hairy stems. The leaves have toothed lobes near the stem and a large lobe at the tip. There is a branched tap root.
Prevalent soil types: it prefers lime-free but nutrient-rich sandy and loam soils.
Shepherd’s purse Erucic acid 21%
Description: A very variable annual or biennial dicotyledon, growing to 5-60cm. Most of the leaves grow as a rosette at the base. The flowerhead is covered with small four petalled white flowers, developing into a characteristic heart-shaped seed head.
Prevalent soil types: it generally grows in nutrient-rich soils, with pH>5, such as humus-rich loams and nitrate-rich sandy soils.

Erucic Acid• A monounsaturated omega-9 fatty acid, found in plants
of the Brassicaceae family, such as natural forms of rapeseed and mustard
• UK and EU legislation sets a limit of 5% erucic acid in any oils and fats for food use due to toxicity at high levels
• Growers face significant penalties where erucic acid levels exceed 2%
• Crushers reported unusually high levels of erucic acid in some crops in 2016 resulting in deductions and rejections in the worst cases
• Although the source of the problem is not known, HEAR volunteers and brassica weeds are likely culprits.

FlexibilitySU toleranceIn addition to hybrid vigour, Clearfield OSR is tolerant to any possible residues from sulfonylurea (SU) herbicides used in the previous crop. This minimises establishment risk in difficult autumns.
• Flexible post-emergence timing – allows main weed flush to germinate while still early enough to protect yield
• Opportunity to wait for crop to establish before investing in herbicide
• Avoids issues such as dry seedbeds reducing residual chemistry efficacy
• Effective in all seedbed conditions, regardless of surface trash and drill depth
• Spreads workload at busy time
Hybrid traitsClearfield® varieties provide a range of growth habits, disease resistance, and competitive yields, along with additional benefits in some such as pod shatter resistance.
A unique system with unique benefits
Vigour & flexibility

The system
A system approach The HerbicidesThere are two herbicides available for autumn 2017, Cleravo® and Cleranda®. Both herbicides offer very similar weed control and can be used as a one-shot option. However, where high populations of weeds that get big quick are anticipated, such as crane’s-bill, poppy or mayweed, Cleravo® allows the option of an early application of metazachlor to sensitize them.

Choose CL variety1
Check weed burden3
Control volunteers*7
Sow variety Do not mix with non CL; record in farm software2
Apply Clearfield® herbicide Only apply to CL varieties & follow best practice advice4
Wash out sprayer Don’t apply washings to non CL crop5
Harvest* Actively manage seed losses from combine6
Clearfield® OSR requires no major change to your existing agronomic practices
Follow these steps to get the best from your crop Cleravo® (or Cleranda) + Dash – top tips
15
Avoid wash-off
Allow minimum of 2 hours (if applied to dry leaf) to become rain-fast
Add Dash HC
Always add Dash HC at 1.0 litres per hectare to improve control of ALL weeds
Dash HC is a non-ionic surfactant which improves leaf cover and uptake
How to get the most out of Clearfield®
Clearfield® herbicides must only be applied to Clearfield® varieties Cleravo® and Cleranda® must only be used on Clearfield® oilseed rape, indicated by a CL suffix. Treatment of non Clearfield® oilseed rape will result in total crop loss
TimingEases the workload at a busy time but don’t be late
Broad-leaved weeds- Target 1-4TL of actively growing weeds
Volunteer cereals- Target 2-3TL of the cereals
Water volume and application
Water volume - 100 litres per hectare is OK
Application - Angled nozzles will help if thick crop- Medium spray is OK but not coarse
*6 At harvestCheck the basics on the combine- Pay attention to the combine reel speed and its depth- Make sure the drum is not running too fast- Avoid high fan speeds, blowing seed over the back- Check the concave is clear and open
Take care on headlands- Direct trash and seed losses from straw-choppers
within the field
Reduce mechanical transfer of seed to other fields- Clean out the combine after use- Avoid losses from trailers / trucks during harvest
Post-harvest management
Encourage early germination of weed seeds- Use stale seedbeds- Keep seeds near the surface - delay cultivation until
2-4 weeks after harvest to minimize secondary dormancy
Use a combination of methods- Non-selective herbicides (glyphosate), cultivation
methods and selective herbicides
Consider rainfall- Delay cultivations / stubble treatments until after
rainfall to encourage weed seed germination
*7 Measures for control of Clearfield® volunteers in following cropsAfter growing Clearfield® oilseed rape, volunteers with some tolerance to Group B* herbicides may appear. These can be controlled easily through standard cultural and chemical means.
- Take care to avoid field-to-field mechanical movement of seed e.g. clean out harvesting and planting machinery
- Stimulate germination of volunteers post-harvest to control with cultivation and possibly an approved formulation of glyphosate
- For chemical control, ALS herbicides will give variable control so non-Group B* herbicides will be needed
* ALS inhibitor herbicides e.g. sulfonylureas
