Introduction

The purpose of this profile is to provide an overview of the health of the population living in the area covered by Lincolnshire Westt CCG. The profile contains the key demographics of the area and also the key health problems in the area.

The reader of this document should consider the links to the Joint Strategic Needs Assessment and consider how the five priority themes may be affected by the findings from this profile. The five priority themes are listed below:

1. Promoting healthier lifestyles

2. Improve the health and wellbeing of older people

3. Delivering high quality systematic care for major causes of ill health

4. Improve health and social outcomes for children and reduce inequalities

5. Tackling the social determinants of healthi

Throughout the profile links will be supplied to relevant websites and data sources so you can obtain the raw data as required. There are several caveats to the information in this profile that need to be considered:

The data included in the profile is a snap shot and the dates indicated.

Some of the information used contains details of the GP registered population whereas other data

sources use ONS population estimates.

At this stage we have focused on providing facts and figures in the document. In the near future we are hoping to add the views from a Public Health Consultant who will give their expert knowledge of the area.

1 Overview

Lincolnshire West CCG has 38 practices covering Lincoln, Navenby, Gainsborough, North Hykeham, Branston, Nettleham, Brigg, Welton, Saxilby, Ingham, Washingborough, Metheringham, Willingham by Stow, Bassingham and Scotter.

The CCG has five Localities; Gainsborough, Lincoln North, Lincoln South, North of Lincoln, and South of Lincoln.

Lincolnshire West CCG have a clear vision statement:

“The people of Lincolnshire West receive compassionate care and excellent health services that promote healthy lifestyles and prevents illness”.

Lincolnshire West CCG will deliver this vision by working through the five goals:

1. Continually improve the health of all those living within Lincolnshire West (e.g. Stop Smoking

programmes, reducing obesity).

2. Reduce health inequalities and improve the quality of life for all (e.g. NHS Health Checks for all,

reduce life expectancy variations).

3. Help patient’s access high quality, responsive healthcare of their choice (e.g. more local services,

easier to get to, more choice).

4. Work together to develop healthcare designed for the needs of our patients, their families and

carers (e.g. work with Social Care and Community Services, Frail Older People Project).

5. Ensure we have effective, value for money services that improve patient experience and safety (e.g.

monitor and act on patient views and involvement)ii.

Key Points

Lincolnshire West CCG has high levels of deprivation compared to other areas in Lincolnshire.

The highest proportion of the population is between ages of 20 and 24 years.

Life expectancy within the CCG is slightly better than the England average.

Prevalence of cancer, diabetes, coronary heart diseases and stroke are

slightly higher than the England average.

The GP referrals to outpatients, elective and emergency admissions are all above England average, with emergency admission rate being also the highest out of all Lincolnshire CCGs.

2 Key Demographic Information

2.1 Population

The GP registered population of Lincolnshire West CCG is 223,773 and the Census 2011 resident population which was taken from the Lincolnshire Research Observatory is 225,298. This is a difference of 1,525. This may be due to residents within an area registering with GPs outside the CCG boundary.

2.2 Age Profile

The chart below provides an age profile of Lincolnshire West CCG (APHO website). The chart below clearly shows a higher proportion of the population of people aged 20-24 years.

3 Health and Wellbeing

3.1 Life Expectancy and Mortality

Under 75 mortality rate from cardiovascular disease, respiratory disease are slightly lower than rates for England. Mortality rate from cancer is higher than England rate and the highest out of all Lincolnshire CCGsiii. Please note that there are discussions around how those rates are being calculated and the methodology may change in the near future.

The graph below shows the average life expectancy for both males and females within Lincolnshire West CCG and England. It can be seen that the average life expectancy is slightly higher in this CCG compared to England.

3.2 Major Diseases

3.2.1 Long Term Conditions – Key Points (2011/2012)

Diabetes prevalence is slightly higher than the England average. The prevalence of diabetes has

increased compared to 2010/11 slightly following National trends (5.7% to 5.9%).

Coronary Heart disease prevalence is above the England average: 4% within Lincolnshire West

compared to 3.4% for England.

Stroke prevalence is higher than the England average: 1.9% within Lincolnshire West compared to

1.7% within England.

Hypertension prevalence is above the England average: 13.8% within Lincolnshire West CCG

compared to 13.6% in England.

Psychoses prevalence is at the same level as the England average: 0.8% in Lincolnshire West CCG

and 0.8% in England. However, depression prevalence is slightly above the England average:

12.3% in Lincolnshire West CCG compared to 11.7% in England.

Cancer prevalence is above the England average: 2.0% (CCG) – 1.8% (England).The number of

Cancer admissions per 1000 is also above the England average: 41 (CCG) – 28.6 (England).

3.2.2 Referrals & Admissions (2010/2011 data)

The rate of GP referrals to outpatients (1st attendance, per 1000) is above the England average:

200.5 (CCG) compared to 191.7 (England).

The rate of elective admissions (per 1000) is above the England average: 138.6 (CCG) compared to

121.0 (England).

The number of emergency admissions (per 1000) is above the England average: 98.0 (CCG)

compared to 89.0 (England).

3.3 Lifestyle – Key Points

Obesity prevalence is above the England average: 12.6% (CCG) compared to 10.7% (England).

The prevalence of obesity has increased from 2010/11 to 2011/12 from 12.2% to 12.6%.iv

The accurate smoking prevalence rates cannot be found for individual CCG areas. However,

according to the Integrated Household Survey by the Department of Health, smoking prevalence is

much higher in Lincoln area (28.3% comparing to 20% in England). West Lindsey and North

Kesteven districts have the smoking prevalence of 17.9% and 20.0% according to the surveyv.

The Health and Wellbeing Strategy 2013-2018 states that “It is estimated that a higher percentage

of adults in Lincolnshire smoke than in the East Midlands and England. However, the percentage of

people quitting smoking is higher in Lincolnshire than in England.”

Priorities within Lincolnshire according to the Health Profile 2012 (www.apho.org.uk) are obesity,

alcohol and tobacco.

4 Other Determinants

4.1 Levels of Deprivation

Lincolnshire West CCG area has an average deprivation score (on the Indices of Multiple Deprivation) of 19.83, the second highest of all Lincolnshire CCGs. Over a quarter of its lower-level super output areas (LLSOA) fall within the most deprived 20% in Lincolnshire.

It is estimated that around 16% of the population within Lincolnshire West CCG are living in what is classified as one of the 20% most deprived areas in Englandvi. Most deprived areas are concentrated around Lincoln and Gainsborough.

The map below shows the levels of deprivation (Indices of Multiple Deprivation 2010) in Lincolnshire overall in comparison to England.

4.2 Unemployment

The geographical area covered by Lincolnshire West CCG contains areas of the high unemployment rates in Lincolnshire: 3.9% based on unemployment benefits claimants rate as the % of working age population.

4.3 Child poverty

It is estimated that 17.42% of children in Lincolnshire West area are living in povertyvii, which is higher rate than the Lincolnshire average, but lower than the rate for England (20.6%).
