FOREWORD Welcome to Cockburn Cricket Club’s wind up and presentation of the 2016/17 Yearbook. This publication is set to celebrate the highs of a year that culminated in 7 of 9 sides making end of season finals of which 3 sides made the Grand Final with Hanks 4th Grade team bringing a two-day premiership back to Cockburn. In addition to this Kerch’s 1st Grade team won the mid-season one-day premiership giving us 2 flags for the year in total. This Yearbook provides you with a comprehensive look at player statistics, milestones and most importantly club achievements. It also contains reports from the President, all Captains, the Coach and the Committee on this season’s events, we’ve thrown some funny things in as well. The Club continues to update the historical statistics data which can be viewed at our website www.cockburncricket.com. All seasons dating back to the club’s inception have been entered into the statistics database. A special mention to Life Member Joe Covic, who has managed this project for the past 8 seasons, including entering data from every match dating back to the 1981/1982 season. The yearbook is always a daunting task and can’t be completed without the support of others throughout the year with photos and articles/comments. Special thanks to all that assisted with content. A big thank you also to Michael (Spike) Collins for being MC on the night again and for everything else he has helped me with throughout the year together with Wade and BJ. To James Matkovich, a big thank you for organising and sorting out all the finer details for our function at the Crown Casino. Finally, I hope you enjoy this book and treat it with the respect it deserves. This Yearbook is a precious memory of the 2016/17 Season. SPONSORSHIP & DONATIONS The Cockburn Cricket Club would like to thank all of our sponsors for their help and support throughout the 2016/2017 season. It has been your help and support that has enabled our club to grow to become one of the biggest clubs in the South Metropolitan Cricket Association, this has been due to your generous support. Sponsorship has become a major source of income for our club, with the funds provided we are able to continue to improve our facilities at Davilak Oval and provide new equipment for our sides. But being able to fund these has also helped to attract new players to our club which resulted in fielding 9 teams this season, the highest number by any club. Every year is hard to entice new sponsors to the club, but this season it was by far the hardest. Not only in trying to gain new sponsors but also retaining some who have been supporting the club for a number of season have had to withdraw their sponsorship due to tough economic times that many small businesses are experiencing. Even with all the tough times we were still able to add a few new sponsors as well as welcoming back a few that have had short break last season. With all the hardships this season, we are pleased to report that this season sponsorship drive has been a very successful again for the Cockburn Cricket Club. To all our sponsors, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your generous contribution and support for the Cockburn Cricket Club. I also would like to ask all our players, members and supporters of the Club to ask people they know, where they work or family members if they would like to become a sponsor of the Cockburn Cricket Club for the 2017/2018 season. PRESIDENT’S REPORT Welcome to the Cockburn Cricket Club Annual Windup. I hope you enjoy the evening and I also hope you enjoy reading this record and celebration of Season 2016/17. It continues to be a great pleasure and privilege to be President of this great club. Last year was an exceptional year and one for the record books for the Club with 6 flags out of a potential 7 that we competed for. It was always going to be a challenge to replicate this success but we gave ourselves every opportunity do this with a highly competitive season and some exceptional performances. We played in 5 mid-season one day grand finals and 3 end of season grand finals. In total we played in more grand finals than we did last year but unfortunately we weren’t able to convert the majority of these into premierships. We won the SMCA 4th Grade Premiership and also the 1st Grade mid-season one day final. This is still a great achievement for the club and special congratulations to those teams. We are very proud of all the teams that competed in all finals and ultimately we are still the most competitive club in the SMCA and for this we should all be commended. You have to be in it to win it and it’s a credit to all players and officials at the Club for continually, season after season, creating opportunities for all teams to be able to compete for these premierships. This is a massive positive for the Club and one not many others can lay claim to this. This is what we all play for – finals cricket and the opportunity to win premierships. Congratulations to Steve Warchomij and Chris Kercheval on fantastic outcomes for their teams this year. All other teams were unlucky not to have won their grand final games but they should all be congratulated for their great seasons. We continue to be the biggest and one of the strongest clubs in the SMCA competition, on and off the field. We are the only club that fields 6 teams in the two-day competition and also the only one out of the 24 clubs with 9 teams in total in a 14 grade competition. This is unprecedented in the SMCA. There are so many people that have made this season a success. To all our players, sponsors, supporters and volunteers, a very big thank you. In terms of committee and off-field matters, as always, everyone on the committee had a role to play and you can see this in the Committee structure on Page 5 of this yearbook. I thank them all for their hard work and support during the year. I can’t speak highly enough of them. It was again an excellent committee and made my job so much easier. It’s never an easy job and takes a lot of time and effort to manage a club our size. We have a great Club because we have a great culture of inclusiveness, competiveness, comraderie and commitment to each other. Well done to you all. There are also so many other family members and friends and volunteers that have helped during the year and I thank you all. In particular I would like to thank my wife Julie-Anne and all my fantastic daughters for helping out whenever asked and providing great support on game days – without their support across the board I couldn’t do any of this. Thank you to PTT for his extraordinary assistance around the Club, not only behind the Bar but with all other general matters. Thanks to Lecia Horton for her efforts in the kitchen and another special thank you to Claude & Monica for their assistance whenever required behind the bar or in the kitchen. Particular thanks to Michael (Spike) Collins for all his support over the past 3 years as vice-president. Spike has been a mentor and great sounding board and source of advice for me over

the years. He steps down as vice-president this year due to heavy travel and work commitments but despite this he has been very supportive to me and provided some calm and thoughtful insight and mentoring whenever required. Thanks mate, very appreciate it. Turning to on-field - a very special thank you to our coach Fedele Camarda and assistant coach John Braid for another outstanding effort with all grades this year. This is the fourth year in a row that we have managed to get at least 6 teams in to finals. Everyone wants to play finals cricket and our Club consistently does that and this is because of the hard work done by Players, Coaches and Selectors. Again, I would also like to thank Matt Watson (chairman of selectors) and Brendan Jones for an amazing effort to select teams that all had a chance every week of winning games and getting into finals. Being a selector is the most difficult job in a club and again special thanks to Matt and BJ for giving all our teams a winning chance. It’s never easy and can be thankless at times but they have done a superb job. Thanks to Lance Black and Pip Raffaele for net co-ordination and grounds maintenance as well as cleaning of the clubrooms. Thanks to Joe Covic for keeping all our club stats up to date and also to Wade Westphal-Groves for all the extra stuff he does around the place that gets unnoticed, on top of his money management. A special welcome and thank you also to Mayor Logan Howlett and his wife Pat and the Cockburn Council for their support throughout this and many previous seasons. Our partnership with the Council is crucial to our long term success and we look forward to the Council’s already great support for many years to come. Thanks to all club’s players, volunteers, life members and sponsors for all their support also in what has been a great season. Congratulations to those that played milestone games during the year. Special mention to Fedele Camarda in getting to 400 games for the Cavaliers during the year. Congratulations to all the Captains – a great achievement for the year to get 7 out of 9 teams into finals. As you all know, the Club’s principles are based on having a strong culture and high levels of competiveness. This is evidenced by our prolonged success over many years. Long may it continue so that we can reap the rewards and continue our quest for more premierships in the future. Enjoy the night and lets all celebrate the positives of another impressive season. COACH’S REPORT The 2016/17 season presented many challenges for the Cockburn Cricket Club that as a club, we met head on. From the outset we took up the challenge to elevate our 3rd Grade side when the SMCA were caught short in the 2nd grade competition. I am proud of the fact that to a man the club had no hesitation accepting an opportunity to play the higher level. This is because as a club we strive to be the best we can both on and off the field and the results are clear for all to see. While we may be disappointed in our Finals results after the success of 2015/16, the fact that we finished in 8 Grand Finals is a fantastic achievement. In the past 2 seasons we have made 15 Grand Finals and won 8 of them! The real challenge next year is to convert more of our Finals appearances into Premierships! Ranko and his committee have once again led the club smoothly and our leaders have been outstanding. Running 9 Grades is a huge task but one the club is willing to engage, as we embrace those who are committed to making Cockburn a great club to be involved in! Well done to Matt Watson and Brendan Jones on a great job selecting and ensuring we had 9 competitive sides week in, week out. Our First Grade side was once again well led by Chris Kercheval who continues to impress as a leader. It was always going to be hard to go back to back and despite falling out of the 4 in the last game of the season, the boys were not that far away from their goal. We simply didn't bat well enough when it counted in what was a very open competition. Lessons have been learned and no doubt we will be back next year striving for the top prize! The boys of course covered themselves in glory with a hard fought victory in the One Day Grand Final. The first for the club in 21 years! Of course congratulations must go to Steve Warchomij and those who helped the 4th grade side to win their Flag. They thoroughly deserved their victory after finishing on top in both the one day and 2 day tables. To Captain's John Braid, Steve Warchomij, Jay Goddin, Matt Ferraro, Luke McCulloch, Jason Smith and Ranko Matic thank you for leading your sides with such dignity. To finish in finals in 7 of the 9 grades we were represented in, is testimony to that fact. Our younger players in particular will benefit from the experience and as a club, we are building quality depth that will be better prepared to stand up, under the pressure that comes with finals cricket. There have been so many great individual performances over the year that we have celebrated as a club. So many so, that I won't mention any single feat in this report, knowing that they will be highlighted in other sections of this yearbook. I will however single out Lance Black for his impeccable efforts in running the nets and John Braid for assistance at training throughout the season. I’m very fortunate that there are so many senior players who are prepared to help out when asked and for that I am very grateful. Finally once again, thanks to my family for supporting me through another summer of cricket.

I, along with many others, am very proud of our club. I love watching the juniors come through with the willing help of our seniors who are more than happy to support our young cricketers. There's nothing better than coming back to the Dav to listen to the match reports, catch up with friends and watch the kids play, knowing they've spent another magic day together! Bring on 2017/18! 1ST GRADE CAPTAIN’S REPORT After the success of last season, 2016-17 had the potential to be a good one, but also the potential to be a tricky one, for many reasons. Other clubs preparing more thorough for us and coming harder at us, was a given after a premiership season. Although this was no doubt a factor, I am of the firm belief that often, we were beaten by ourselves rather than the dominance of others. With absolutely no disrespect intended to other clubs in saying that, because the competition was very tight and some clubs showed noticeable improvement, I feel we fell short in key areas that we have prided ourselves on over the last two years, key areas that sore us build our brand of cricket. Commitment to training and preparation, hunger for the contest, the will to not just get the best out of ourselves but the bloke sitting next to you, these qualities and emotions fell short of the standards we have set for each other. As a result, the close games that we had become accustomed to winning, became narrow losses. Ultimately this resulted in us sliding out of finals contention. Although not far away, we can’t sugar coat it and we all view the season, and rightly so, as a season of lost opportunities.

Without doubt our losses this season were due to our performances with the bat. Consistency and the inability to fight through pressure were for most part non-existent. As top and middle order players, we need to take it upon ourselves to fix this, at times our tailenders showed us how this should be approached. Glancing over the season numbers, to have one of our players top the runs tally, and our next best come in at #21 paints a bleak picture. Only 2 players made over 200 runs. In comparison, premiership team Armadale had six players in the top 20, all of which made over 300 runs. Say no more. In a rare highlight from us with the bat, Adam O’Neill blasted his maiden A grade century. It was an incredible innings to witness, the most pleasing element of this innings was Adam giving himself time to get going, time to adjust and feel the game. What Adam can produce when he does this was on display that afternoon against Bicton. Another I would like to mention is Chris Scenini at the tail of our innings. Chris remained not out on 9 occasions, sometimes facing 40 plus deliveries, this is the fight we all need to display.

With the ball this year, for the most part we were very good. On occasions though we seemed to really lack that suffocating effect we have previously had on opposition batsmen, too many times letting them off the hook with a loose one. As good performers go, we had none better than Chris Scenini, 38 wickets at an average of 12.47, for a leg spinner, that is incredible. Chris was very stiff to just miss out on the SMCA bowling average, a great year. Troy Evans took his game to a new level this year and was outstanding, 22 wickets and most of them being early ones was important. You can’t ask much more out of your opening bowler than early poles. Vice-Captain Troy De Jesus had a solid year with the ball, also claiming 22 wickets. Jun Jun’s ability to bowl through the middle to late part of an innings and break partnerships has been crucial. Although not the year he would have desired with the bat, like a lot of us, Jun did have some good all round games, these games were enough for him to claim the A Grade MVP award, well done. I also want to thank Jun for his support and leadership as Vice-Captain. Andrew Oreb toiled hard as usual and finished the year with 18 wickets. Colm Kinsella was a very handy inclusion for the club, a strike bowler who certainly rushed top order batsmen at times. Colm also played some important innings down the order for us with the bat. James Matkovich’s glove work this season is certainly worth mentioning, very tidy indeed. Macca has a great cricket brain and his input and leadership throughout the year was greatly appreciated.

Injuries and availabilities hurt us throughout the season. With heavy reliance still on our older brigade, the time is now for our 15-40 game players to really take ownership of their roles and stamp themselves as consistent, imposing figures in this competition. It is this group that will push us older guys to stay hungry and keep improving, the drive needs to come from you guys more than anyone. Although overall, no one involved is satisfied with the season, we can’t dismiss the fact we took out the One Day Premiership. Not our end goal but we should be very proud that through a season we underachieved, we were still able to add another A Grade Flag to the wall. Well done boys.

On behalf of myself and the A grade playing group, there are many to thank. Ranko and the committee, thank you for another outstanding year of service and support. Fedele, thank you for your quality leadership and support, we will bounce back. Chooky and BJ, thank you for your work and support on what was a very tricky season at the selection table. Players, partners and families, as players we know it’s a big commitment and a long summer so thanks for supporting the guys. Everyone behind the scenes, working the bar, afternoon teas, dinners, and all that goes into looking after us players, we thank you.

Lastly, to the playing group, thank you for your help and support. Enjoy the break, but also feed off the disappointment of going from top of the table with three rounds remaining, to sliding out of finals contention. We can’t accept that. Our talent, friendship and the enjoyment of playing together is unquestioned. If we reignite our hunger and our want to be the best we can be, success will be inevitable. But it doesn’t just happen, it’s up to us. We are a good side, don’t forget that. But potentially, with the right mindset, we can be a great side. A great side, creating more unforgettable memories. 2NDGRADE CAPTAIN’S REPORT

Looking back at season 2016/17, I am still feeling like it was the one that got away. The 2nd grade had a successful season, that unfortunately failed to produce a flag. At the start of the season we were promoted from 3rd grade to 2nd grade to fill the void made by Kardinya. The side finished on top of the home and away ladder by a significant margin, but then lost the one-day final and the semi-final. It shows just how hard premierships are to get in any grade and why you should celebrate every time you win one. Congratulations to Hank and his team for their premiership in 4th grade.

A number of thank yous are in order, as no team gets on the park without a significant amount of off-field assistance. To Ranko and the committee for running the club. PTT for setting the ground up and running the bar during matches at the Dav. Thanks also to the selectors Chooky and BJ, we may not always have seen eye-to-eye, but your support was invaluable. Training would not have been possible without Fedele as coach and Blackie as net captain. I’m sure I’ve missed a few and to those, my apologies.

The strength of 2nd grade throughout the year was the fact that everyone contributed, rather than relying on a couple of stars. This is shown in the bowling with the top five bowlers taking between 19-24 wickets each (all games) with averages 16 to 16.95!

One of the most pleasing things for me this season was seeing a number of players take the step up into 2’s and be successful. Michael Cimetta had an outstanding start to the season and opened in every game he played. Matt Jones joined us just before Christmas as a fill-in, and then made the spot his own. Derek Smith is a class bowler and showed his ability throughout the season. Boro Jerkovic made his way from one-day G grade to 2’s and lost form at the appropriate time to get dropped into a 4th grade premiership, quite an achievement! I’m sure they will cement their spots in 2’s next season and look to push higher.

The Disco Factor. To those that have played with Disco, little more needs to be said. His power hitting was always entertaining and certainly assisted in winning a number of games. His bowling was Jekyll and Hyde – he would back up a rancid spell with a sublime spell the following week that no one could lay a bat on. It is a shame that it looks like he will be working away again next season. Congratulations on the Club Champion award.

A special mention must go to Mark Blinco and his “wonder ball”. He reckons the umpire called it the “ball of the day”, Blinc’s took to calling it “ball of the year”. The rest of us are calling it the “wonder ball”, as we are still wondering how he hit the pitch! (1 over, 1/6, 12 balls bowled, no runs off the bat). Good thing you can bat!

I really can’t leave this without a mention on the SMCA grading. At the time of writing, it appears that the SMCA is going to demote us to 3rd grade in order to promote Kardinya. This defies logic, as Cockburn went to 2nd grade to accommodate the SMCA decision to drop Kardinya from 1st grade to 3rd grade, at Kardinya’s request. We then beat everyone in the home and away season in 2nd grade, such that if we didn’t already have a 1st grade side, we would have qualified for 1st grade!

The future for the club looks good with the strength of the 2’s and 3’s as it is now. The younger players in these grades now need to be looking to taking the next step into A grade and then we can ensure continued success at the highest level for this club.

3rd GRADE (SMCA 4th) CAPTAIN’S REPORT Firstly I would like to express my gratitude to Fedele and the committee for giving me the opportunity to captain this year. After last year’s premiership season in the Seconds I decided I would like to try my hand at captaincy and I am so glad that I got the opportunity to captain the three’s this season. Being my first year as captain I was extremely lucky to have some very experienced guys who helped me a lot throughout the year. Nick Ratta was the perfect choice as vice-captain with his well known insight into the game and opposition players, along with Joe Covic who I spent a lot of time with behind the stumps learning the craft of sledging (by the rules)......mainly his rules! The side, for the majority of the year, had an abundance of experience and I would like to mention my joy at getting to play once again with Stan Koios, Anthony Ricci, Paul Mirco, Pip Raffaele, Matty Ferraro and Steve Camarda in their cameo roles during the year. But when you have these guys in your side it’s important to have guys who can touch their toes and the young blokes such as Sam Devereux, Jay Fernie, and the Goncalves brothers were all massive contributors to the team’s success. As much as you love playing with your mates week in, week out the young guys bring a great energy and comraderie to the team and will all play a big part in the club’s future years. Playing with your mates and winning games of cricket is why we rock up each Saturday and to get to play the year with my long time mates Arron Savage, Brendan Jones and the return of Craig Hall this year really made the victories so much sweeter! Speaking of victories, we were able to take out the big one destroying Hilton in the grand final and remained undefeated in the fixtured matches throughout the year!! We did have one stumbling block, losing the one day grand final by eight runs, but I believe this was the wakeup call we needed to make sure the year was successful! As a team the performance was something I could have never imagined and there were plenty of individual performances worth mentioning. Stan Koios’ - 107 v Kwinana, Nick Ratta’s - 98 v Willeton, Disco’s - 157 v Willeton (yes that is not a typo), Paul Mirco’s - 120 unbeaten v Cannington, Matty Jones’ - 86 v Cannington, Disco’s - 5 for 53 v Cannington, Paul Mirco’s - 127 v Riverton, Sam Devereux - 6 for 37 v Riverton, Joe Covic’s - 85 v Riverton, Matty Ryan’s – 76 v Piarra Waters (to win the game chasing 250!), & Disco’s – 81 v Kwinana. To finish with the individual accolades I have to mention the Grand final performances of Joe Covic with his 69 runs from 200 balls with the support of Boro Jerkovic scoring 47. This gave us a good total at Davilak in which Doggy has gone straight through Hiltons bat’s finishing with 5 for 24 and giving us victory by 119 runs! This was a great day for myself, the boys and the club and I wish we could have had couple of guys who missed out through selection with us as they were fantastic contributors throughout the year, but unfortunately only 11 can play on the day. All jokes aside……Sadly…we also lost a Cavalier recently: Peter J Smith played a season for us in 1996/97 after Fedele encouraged him to have a game. Fedele met Peter through one of Georgina's friends and he was a genuine gentleman. He played mainly in a side led by Shane (Rowdy) Roebuck. In a note sent by his wife Jodie to Fedele we were told how much he enjoyed his time at Cockburn. At the time he was working at the Sheraton Hotel and had to change quickly and rush to work after games. Due to work, the fact he lived in East Victoria Park and other commitments he only ever played the one season. The CCC would like to express our deepest sympathy to Peter's family and recognise his contribution to the Club. RIP Peter.

SPECIAL ACHIEVEMENTS SEASON 2016/17

Colm Kinsella:

- First person to hit the new roof (Technically the gutter) - First person to be hit onto the new roof (Panel may need replacing)

Michael Cimetta:

- Achieved a higher Tinder average (54.3) than batting average (10.2) after Christmas. Ranko Matic:

- Got shot by a sniper at Davilak and survived. Troy DeJesus:

- Played a whole season of Kick-it without needing new pads. Gabe Puca:

- Burnt a record number of pies and sausage rolls in the pie warmer. Steven Goodall:

- Ran out Chairman of Selectors on 88 and didn’t get dropped.

Jake Goncalves:

- New personal best number of duffers entries (7). Jay Goddin:

- Bettered his own record for number of boxes used to consume beer (8)

4TH GRADE (SMCA 5TH) CAPTAIN’S REPORT Once again it was a pleasure to Captain a side at the club and again it was a thoroughly enjoyable experience. Despite regular changes to personnel I could never fault the commitment of all players who came through the 5th Grade. As a result we made both the One Day and 75 over Grand Finals but unfortunately were not good enough on the big days. Despite this fact, I feel that the way our younger players stood up on regular occasions puts us in good stead for the future. Once again Steve Goodall showed that he is a very talented cricketer excelling with both bat and ball. It will be nice to see Steve push up the Grades to take his game to another level. Jay Fernie performed well for us with the bat and was rewarded with promotion and eventually played an important role in the 4th grade finals campaign. Andrew Cianfarani had a solid year with a 5 wicket performance in the One Day Grand Final and Jason Cecchi was sensational in hitting the first ever century in a Grand Final for the club. Jace Vodanovic again showed his talents with limited opportunities and will no doubt be an asset for this club. He is a fighter and I'm happy to go on record to say it was a mistake not to play him in our Finals. Finally Jake Goncalves who came into our side for the last 3 matches showed that he is a person of high calibre. We know that he is a very good bowler but when given the opportunity with the bat he proved he is equally capable. Danny Bateman will benefit from the experience and I believe as with many bowlers his best is still ahead. When he gets it right he's a handful for any batsman in the competition. The older guys like Chook, Just, Pip, Jerry, Congo, Steven, Hally and all others who played with us this year showed they still have plenty to offer and made my job easy. It’s always difficult to make decisions when you have so many options but it shows the character of the people in this club that we can function so smoothly. We will move on from the season with fond memories and many positives to run with but will also be motivated by the reality that we missed our opportunity to win 2 premierships. It is my intention to get back out there and give ourselves every chance to have another crack at the big one. We have to dare to win and we know that the rewards are worth it when we get there! 5TH GRADE (SMCA 6th GRADE) CAPTAIN’S REPORT I would like to start by saying thanks to Fedele, Chooky and BJ for giving me the opportunity to captain my first team, and supporting me throughout the year. I would also like to thank everyone that played in the team throughout the year, it was great having a mix of experienced and younger players coming through the side. It was always going to be tough taking over a winning team and filling the shoes of the Chook man from last year, however, I couldn’t be prouder of the blokes that carried us to the grand final. We gave it a fair crack with a young side, and I can only see us improving from here. I’d like to thank Zak Overton for vice captaining and sticking with me through some rough games this seasons, I would also like to thank Peter Firth, Doggy and Blackie for helping me and out teaching me a few things about captaining. All in all we had a successful season by making the 2 day grand final, although losing by 20 odd runs, it was a bold effort considering our opposition. There were a few low moments in the regular season, however, there were many more highs. After getting pumped by Kelmscott in the first game I wasn’t sure what I had gotten myself into. We were able to turn this around next game by beating Leeming outright in the first 2 day match for the season. After this we were able to play pretty consistent cricket allowing us to finish 3rd in the overall ladder. There was quite a few stand out individual performances that I would like to highlight; Zak Overton’s hard fought 85 against Kardinya when the team was 5/60 to help get the team to 229 Doggy’s marathon 6/56 from 20 overs against Kardinya Tom Weston’s flawless 71 chasing 180 in a one dayer against Leeming Adam Merendino’s clutch 4/21 off 8 defending 134 in a one dayer against Kelmscott Brendan Mirco’s unbeaten 64 against Riverton where he batted 50 overs in the scorching heat It was great seeing a lot of the younger players maturing and achieving success in the team, let’s hope we can improve and bring the flag we deserve back to the Dav next season. 6TH GRADE (SMCA 7th GRADE) CAPTAIN’S REPORT

Wow wee what a roller coaster of a season for the newly introduced 65 over 7th grade team. It turned out to be a very tough grade coming up against some big club’s 2nd and 3rd grade teams versus our genuine 6th grade team!

As tough as the grade was the 38 different players that played under me can hold their heads high as after a slow start we finished the season as the team to beat and with a little more luck would have been worthy premiers.

We started the season slowly with six or seven changes to the team every week but somehow fought hard to make the One Day Grand Final. We were very unlucky to lose this Grand Final to Phoenix with a few poor umpiring decisions not going our way.

After Christmas the teams development was awesome to see, with a more stable team that was building some great chemistry. The growth in players like Mahli, Bomba, Choco, Bowsa, Barret, Santich, Tyrie plus the great form of the older guys in Mitchell, Micale, Legena, Wade, and Stogen’s great keeping saw us have some amazing victories against some very good opposition. The highlight was our victory over a cocky Jandakot Park team with Bomber Patels unbelievable innings from being night watchman to guiding the team to victory. This innings must be one of the greatest innings in Cockburn’s history!

We ended the regular season in 3rd position and the form team in the 7th grade. With an away semi versus the eventual premiers Piara Waters who hadn’t made under 200 runs all season we rolled them for 138 with an amazing bowling display from old war horses in Clint Mitchell and Justin Micale. Chasing the 138 required to get us in the grand final seemed a formality after being 6/137 needing 2 runs off 14 overs. Then the lowest ebb of the season happened in 7 balls loosing 4 for 1. All out for 138 also, saw us tie with Piara Waters. They went through eventually winning the Grand Final easily. The mood in that room after this loss was something hard to describe with nothing but silence and tears. We fought so hard and built a really strong team bond and to see the look in the boy’s eyes after this loss was heartbreaking!

However there were some great highlights along the journey

Round 1 - Andre Van der Westhuizen and Troy Harris debut for the club. Welcome to these great guys!

Round 2 - First win of year sees Dave Wilson take 4 wickets and the debut of a star in Dave “Choc” Calanna with 32 not out in his first ever game.

Round 4 - Rob Santich stars with 6/42 against a very good Piara Waters

Round 5 - Steve Camarda’s 88 runs sees him propel up the grades and Mitchy with a classy 50. The new “Brute” was born with a fierce bowling display 6/35 from Tyrie Wilkinson.

Round 6 – versus Phoenix, unearthed future 1st grade players Kaiden Cookson (27 runs and 2/16) and Tommy Weston (23 runs)

Round 7 – sees Ahmit Mahli star with 36 not out and 3/28, with Matty Bowerman a nice 45 not out.

Round 8 – versus Piara Waters Geoff Barret smashes an amazing 111 runs with Clint Mitchell chipping in with another 50 and 3/26 with the ball.

Round 9 - versus CBC saw a swashbuckling 60 runs from Wade Westphal Groves and another bag of 5 wickets for Rob Santich.

Round 10 - versus Phoenix Clint Mitchell makes 40 and takes 4/44, Mahli takes 3/10 and a nice 36 from Choco!

Round 11 – versus Maddington Ahmit Mahli stars with 5 /24 including a hat-trick! Choco and Clint with very good 60’s! Club legend Frank Legena makes his long awaited return to the club and a cameo from Terror!

Round 12 – versus Jandakot after being 3 for 7 chasing 152, myself (105 runs) and Bomba (41 not out as night watchman, plus 2 wickets) put on 132 run partnership to see us to victory! Mitchy 30 runs and 3/17 also very handy.

Round 13 - Choco stars with 107 not out, I get a lucky 115 and Justin Micale takes 4 wickets!

Round 14 – 3 wickets each for Santich and Wilkinson. Bowerman top score with 42 runs.

Semi Final – Highlight was seeing how much this loss meant to everyone, it’s more than a game!

Finally I would like to thank the Club and Committee for the opportunity to captain this great bunch of blokes. From President Ranko, Fedele (Coach), Lance Black (Net Coach), BJ n Chooky (Selectors) thanks for your support though out the year. Also a special thanks to my Vice Captain Clint Mitchell for all your help and advice over the year, you are a star and a champion bloke!

It was a roller coaster but one hell of an enjoyable ride! We will be back…..

ONE-DAY E CAPTAIN’S REPORT It was again an honour to captain the E Team as we sought to take the next step and capture the flag that narrowly eluded us last season. There was a real sense of excitement as the lads got back together to play the game we love and we can take pride in the way the team went about its cricket. Unfortunately a combination of injuries and the realities of balancing nine teams every week meant that we rarely fielded the same team week in, week out and never really built the momentum that leads to premierships. Despite this we performed strongly and comfortably made the final four and it was a real disappointment to be knocked out in the semi-finals. The up side of regular team changes was that we got to see just over a quarter of the Cockburn playing group pull on the whites for the E Team. From first year Cockburn members David Calanna, Peter Ratta, Andre Van der Westhuizen and Troy Harris to young guns Tom Weston, Kaiden Cookson and Jacob Sax and even younger guns Matt Medin, Jayden Camarda and Campbell Bartle to Club stalwarts Jerry Pires, Shane Roebuck and Lui Medin as well over twenty players that have made up the one day teams over the last couple of years, it was a pleasure to play alongside them all and everyone’s contribution was appreciated. I would like to congratulate Tony Palfrey on winning our MVP despite only playing eight games, contributions with both bat and ball made him a worthy winner. His back injury that kept him out for half the season was arguably the worst although the fellow who spent a month out with a ruptured testicle might have something to say about that. On that note I would like to thank Mick Phillis for looking after the team while I was incapacitated. Some of the highlights for me this season was watching the bowling development of Paul Clarke, Anthony Galati and Mitch Ferris, all terrific young men who will serve the club well into the future. It was also a pleasure to watch Tony Palfrey, David Calanna, Tom Weston and Mick Phillis score their maiden half centuries for the club. But my favourite memory of this season was watching Lui Medin, not the magnificent 124 he scored against Leeming, but the fantastic 72 run partnership that he had with his son Matt that laid the foundation for a terrific win against Phoenix. On a personal note I would like thank Rowdy Roebuck, not just for his contribution at the top of the order but for his on field mentoring, it was greatly appreciated. I would also like to acknowledge the contribution of our club leaders, Ranko, Fedele, Chook, BJ, Wade, JB, LB, Slugga and team captains. ONE-DAY G – COCKBURN 1 - CAPTAIN’S REPORT Firstly I would like to thank Fedele & Matt for the opportunity of captaining the ‘Father – Son’ team, also known as One-Day G’s for the 2016 / 2017 season. Even though we didn’t fulfill our goal of making the Grand Final, I believe we had a very successful season by finishing 3rd after the regular season and losing in the Semi-Final to a very experienced Thornlie team who were the runners up in the One-Day F’s competition last season. Other than the couple of games I played last year in the One-Day F’s team, it had been roughly 10+ years since I last had the pleasure of playing for the Cockburn Cricket Club, this year I had an absolute ball & to captain the team this year it was an absolute honour. During the season we came up against teams that had former ‘A’ grade players, players with 400+ games experience & even some teams that had players who should have been playing in grades a lot higher than our grade. The One-Day G’s team was a true father-son team, as pretty much each week we generally had 7 – 8 players 16 years of age or younger, topped up with 3 or 4 let’s just say more experienced players (This isn’t number of games played experience either 😊😊). During the season there was quite a few junior players who made their senior debut, these players being Franki DiMento, Nick Fulton, Ethan Fulton, Matthew Medin, Jayden Camarda, Damian Dearle, Tom Barnett, Lawson Micale & Campbell Bartle. Our main strength during the season was definitely our bowling and a majority of the time our fielding, having young athletic & keen players in the field came in very handy. Though on the flip side there were times that the power of concentration wasn’t there and the minds of players were else-where. As my unofficial Vice-Captain Vince Santaromita was a model of consistency with the new ball & finished the season with a team leading 26 wickets at an average of 13.42, he was well backed up by Jalen Smith, Cameron Bartolomei, Jayden Camarda, Luca Collica, Tyler Watson, Ethan Fulton & Nick Fulton. Tom Barnett & Damian Dearle bowled well in the limited games they played towards the back end of the season. Unfortunately our weakness during the season was our batting where we only had a total of 7 scores greater than 50 runs. On the positive side Tyler Watson (56 no), Matthew Medin (69) & Franki DiMento (50 retired hurt) all made their maiden half centuries in seniors. As a batting group we need to place my importance on our wickets & hopefully all players take this on board for future seasons. As I have mentioned to the group, as well as the powers who be in the club there are a few players who have the potential to be future squad members for the 1st & 2nd grade as they gain move experience and confidence in their games. It is now up to all players to work on their games during the off season & aim to play in as high grades as possible.

On a final note, I would like to thank all the players that represented the One-Day G’s team during the season, everyone’s contribution assisted us in making the semi-finals and an overall successful season, so thank you all very much. ONE-DAY G – COCKBURN 2 - CAPTAIN’S REPORT First up I’d like to say that I really enjoyed captaining the “BG’s” team this season but more importantly I was proud that our club took a risk by putting in a 9th team into the SMCA competition even after not playing the first 3 rounds. This put us well behind the pack in terms of points accumulation and well behind the Top 4. Nevertheless it was a brave move by the club as it was unheard of that a senior club could field 99 players in one round of cricket and we continued to do so for the rest of the year. Having the BG’s in the competition ensured that anyone that wanted to play cricket at Cockburn could do so. It was a great team to play in and had a balance of experience and youth all year. Our first game was against the top of the table and undefeated Thornlie in Round 4. With some fighting Cavalier spirit, we managed to beat them first up and were off and running. At the same time we welcomed Boro Jerkovic (an ex-cockburn junior) to the seniors. Boro hadn’t played cricket for over 10 years and was the key to us winning a few games early in the season and after his maiden century for the club in ODG in Round 6 he made his way through the grades all the way to 2nds and eventually winning a premiership medal in 3rd Grade. An extraordinary year for him. Welcome to the Cavaliers Boza! Other great performances during the season came from Ethan Fulton who made 2 unbeaten 50’s for us during the season and kept extremely well and even bowls spin. A great young talent. His brother Nicholas also contributed significantly with bat and ball and dad, Paul, had an outstanding all-round effort culminating in the MVP award for the team. David Wilson contributed well all year in all respects as did Rob Sax, Ben Lines and Andre Van der Westhuizen who made a great 73 in round 6 against Phoenix. Mitchell Ferris and PTT bowled extremely well when they played with us as did Troy Harris. Troy Foster (10 Wkts), Campbell Bartle (10 Wkts) and Rob Sax (9 Wkts) were great bowling contributors all year. It was good to see Joe Camarda play his 150th game for the club this year in ODG in the same game that his son Riley made his debut for seniors. Joe last played for Cockburn in Feb 2007, 10 years ago, so it’s been a long time between games and fantastic that he is back! Riley also made a 55 for us during the season. Other debut father and sons were Greg Munt (made 59 no in round 11) with his son Jarryd who also had a solid year. Peter Brookes had a day out against Thornlie in Round 7 making 66. Brendan Mirco made 59 in round 8 against Kelmscott that ensured a victory for us on that day. Dane Johnston also bowled very well for us when he played as did Mark Bartle. We had quite a few narrow losses during the year or games that could have quite easily gone our way if we had taken a few more of our opportunities. Nevertheless we still had a good season considering our late start and it was extremely satisfying to be playing alongside some great young talent. DUFFERS FINALISTS Matthew Ferraro: Forgot to check his teams kit and rocked up to the game with a juniors kitbag. Zak Overton: After Hank telling him that he had to go to swimming lessons on Sunday morning, he asked why Hank still needed swimming lessons? (Hanks 4 year old son has since completed his summer swimming lessons) Jesse Mirco: Asked if you could still be given out if it hits your pad strap, pointing out that ‘you are given out if it hits your glove so why would your pad any different?’ Taya Mirco: For believing Rhino when he asked for money for the straw she wanted with her drink. Brendan Jones: Selected an 11a and 11b in a one-day fixture. Graham Santich: Came into the A-Grade change rooms and asked where the scorebook was, to which Greggy replied “In the drinks esky”. He searched the drinks esky which contained cordial and ice and said “I don’t think it’s actually in here” Jake Westphal-Groves: Called out “Good running boys!” half a second before a fielder threw the ball that resulted in a direct hit run out. Cameron Oxford: After hearing about Kercheval’s double hundred, he said “I hope he makes it to the Dav for some celebratory frothies!” Kerch scored his double hundred at Davilak. Sam Devereux: For thinking Riverton play their cricket in Kwinana! Zak Overton: Setting the field and being ready to go only to realise he’d left the match ball in the rooms. Pippo Raffaele: Hally bowled 2 balls and went off injured. Pip finished his over but took a wicket. He asked if he got credited with the wicket or Hally did. Jay and Jake Steve Goodall: After some great celebrations at Davilak the boys all decided to head to Disco’s house to continue the partying. After getting a lift to Disco’s house, Steve wondered why the guy that drove them there was still at the house having a beer with everyone and enjoying himself. Steve then queried who had paid the Uber guy and then went over and thanked the driver for the ride to Disco’s house. It turns out this so called “Uber” driver was in fact a fellow Cavalier, a previous teammate and premiership winning player Alex Liyanage and was not an Uber driver!!!!!
