Page 5: cold drawing

Page 5

1.10.6.2 Inspection of surface defects

1.10.6.2.1 General

Unless otherwise stated at the time of ordering, the selection of methods from the following is left to the discretion of the producer for revealing surface defects.

— pickling test (see 1.10.6.2.2); — magnetic particle test (see 1.10.6.2.3); — compression test (see 1.10.6.2.4); — alternating torsion test (see 1.10.6.2.5).

The specification in Clauses 1.10.6.2.4 and 1.10.6.2.5 shall be taken into account for the field of use of the compression test and the alternating torsion test.

The depth of the defects shall be determined on the wire rod in the as-rolled state by means of a filed test piece or by microscopy. In the case of arbitration, microscopic inspection shall be carried out.

1.10.6.2.2 Pickling test

In the pickling test, a 200 mm length of wire rod in the as-rolled state is immersed — as a test piece intended to reveal any surface defects — in a sulphuric acid or hydrochloric aqueous solution composed, respectively, of

— 1 volume of sulphuric acid ρ = 1.84 kg/1) and 9 volumes of water;

— 1 volume of hydrochloric acid (p = 1.19 kg/1) and 1 volume of water.

The test piece is pickled by immersion in a solution at a temperature of between 60 and 70 °C, until the oxide is removed and for a maximum period of 15 minutes. The pickling shall be followed immediately by rinsing of the test piece first of all in running water and then in denatured methyl or ethyl alcohol and then dried in air.

1.10.6.2.3 Magnetic particle test

For the magnetic particle test, a 200 to 300 mm length of wire rod in the as-rolled state is subjected to a surface inspection after prior magnetization.

The presence of defects is shown by the alignment of the magnetic particles in the presence of the magnetic field.

1.10.6.2.4 Compression test

For the compression test, a straight length of wire rod in the as-rolled state, of length equal to one and a half times the corresponding nominal dimension and with flat-end faces perpendicular to the longitudinal axis, is crushed by a press at an initial temperature of approximately 900 °C until its length is reduced to 50% of its initial value.

For steel CD 53 and all steels with lower carbon content, the compression test may be carried out cold at the discretion of the manufacturer.

1.10.6.2.5 Alternating torsion test

The alternating torsion test is carried out on the wire rod in the as-rolled state, or where applicable after spheroidizing. The test length shall be 50 times the diameter in the case of

round cross-sections and 56,4 y ^ for other cross-sections, with a maximum of 500 mm. The test shall be carried out firstly in one direction up to the number of 360° twists indicated in Table 1.2 and then in the opposite direction up to the same number of twists. If the test piece breaks prematurely, and there are no surface defects visible, a re-test shall be carried out in which the test piece may not break before the end of the test.

For steels 2 CD 5 to 2 CD 25, the alternating torsion test is carried out on wire rod of diameter (or equivalent dimension) less than 15 mm. For other grades of steel, the test is carried out on wire rod of diameter (or equivalent dimension) equal to or less than 8 mm.

1.10.7 Re-tests

EURONORM 21 applies for re-tests.

1.11 MARKING

The coils in each consignment shall bear a mark containing the following information:

— dimensions of the transverse cross-section of the wire rod; — designation of the steel grade·, — cast number (except in the case of basis steel 1 CD 9); — name and identification mark of the producer; — any other agreed information. The marking shall be resistant to pickling.

L12 CLAIMS

For claims and action on them the requirements of EURO-NORM 21 apply.

III.l FIELD OF APPLICATION

This section of this EURONORM applies to special steel rod (wire rod) for cold drawing and/or cold rolling.

III.2 REQUIREMENTS

For the general requirements see Section I.

III.2.1 Chemical composition

The values indicated in Table III.l apply for the chemical composition of the cast. The permissible deviations of the product analysis in relation to the ladle analysis are given in Table III.2.

111.2.4.2 Total decarburization (partial and complete)

The limit values for depth of total decarburization in Table III.4 apply.

111.2.4.3 Inspection of decarburization

Inspection of decarburization is carried out in accordance with EURONORM 104 with the following deviations.

The total decarburization is inspected by microscopy with a magnification of χ 200 on an etched transverse metallographic test piece. The total depth of decarburization shall be taken as the mean of eight measurements at the ends of four diameters at 45° to each other, starting from the area of maximum decarburization, at the same time avoiding starting from a local surface defect. In the calculation of the above mean value, any measuring point of the seven remaining situated in a local surface defect shall not be taken into account in the calculation.

III.2.2 Defects

Wire rod shall not have any internal and/or surface defects such as shrink holes, segregation, cracks, seams, incrustations, notches, scale or burrs which may be detrimental to its appropriate use.

III.2.3. Depth of cracks

For the inspection described in Subclause 1.10.5 and 1.10.6.2, the depth of crack limit values corresponding to the values indicated in Table III.3 apply.

111.2.4 Depth of decarburization

The specifications given below regarding the depth of decarburization and the inspection procedures relating to it (see also 1.10.5) only apply if agreed at the time of ordering.

I II .2.5 Inspection of non-deformable non-

metallic inclusions

The method for inspecting nonmetallic inclusions and the assessment criteria for it shall be agreed at the time of ordering by referring, where possible, to the following standards:

— DIN 50 602/1985  Metallographische Prüfverfahren Mikroskopische Prüfung von Edelstahlen auf nichtmetallische Einschlüsse mit Bildreihen;

— NF A 04107  1980  Produits sidérurgiques Méthode micrographique de détermination de la teneur en inclusions non métalliques du fil machine en acier non allié;

— ASTM E 45/1985 — Standard practice for determining the inclusion content of steel;

( ') The deviations relate to the values in Table III. 1 except for the case specified in note (2). In a cast the deviation shown by an element in the product analysis may only be below the minimum value or above the maximum value of the range given for the ladle analysis, but never the two at once. For the elements defined by a maximum content, the permissible deviation relates to this maximum.

(2) The permissible deviations relate to the actual ladle analysis indicated in the inspection certificate, or, where appropriate, the test report.
