III.III. Reading practice
Like many other aspects of American life, the people refuse to let the government controleducation. Expatriate families are often shocked to discover that there is no national education system. Most school funding is at the state level, and each district has an elected board of education to set curriculum and handle administration. According to Dr. Anne Copeland, coauthor of Understanding American Schools, standards vary so widely that the
American education
quality of local schooling often determines where families choose to live. While the vast majority of children attend public (state-run) schools, many parents look to alternative options, such as independent (private) schools or home schooling. There are also schools with religious affiliations, such as Jewish or Catholic parochial schools, where students can receive the religious instruction forbidden in public schools.
Extracurricular activities are considered an
integral part of a child’s overall education.Though participation in music, sport, science, arts, and community-service activities, children broaden their horizons and learn new skills. Similarly, the work ethic kicks in early. With that first roadside lemonade stand, American children of all backgrounds get a taste for financial independence. This often starts with them doing basic household chores in exchange
for an allowance (pocket money), continues inthe form of a “paper route”( 送报赚钱的工作 ) orbabysitting job, and progresses to a weekend position at a local store or restaurant. Some claim that all these activities lead to stressed-out families and children who are too tightly scheduled. However, American children seem to thrive by keeping busy and are often well prepared to meet the demands and responsibilities of adult life.
