M  arch newsletter the making of

olorize olorize olorize C C ome of you may have wondered just how exactly weo about putting together a show. Well, this month, I de-ded to let you in on the making of  Colorize – the

atest addition to our productions.

reating a new show in 13thFLOOR starts in prayer. Most of the time, when we as a production committee

art off with the creative process, we have no ideas onhe table whatsoever. So we pray, and it takes howeverong it may take, but usually that is where a show is

orn. So, around the end of last year, as we were pray-ng about the new productions, we were led to readom Eze. 37, where God commands Ezekiel to proph-cy life over the valley of dry bones. We felt that weeeded to build a the new production around this con-ept.

ext, it took us time to make sense of what exactly Godwas saying. One key verse still stands out to me. It reads:

hen he said to me: Son of man, these bones are thewhole house of Israel. They say, 'Our bones are

dried up and our hope is gone; we are cut off.'

Therefore prophesy and say to them: 'This is what

the Sovereign LORD says: O my people, I am

going to open your graves and bring you up

from them; I will bring you back to the land of

Israel. (Eze. 37:11, 12)

So, moral of the story? The people of God were lifeless– dry – because of lost hope. Life happened, circum-stances were unpleasant and they had lost their hopein God. So the show is about life and about hoping inGod in the midst of circumstances.

Next, we start to create the appropriate vehicle, so tospeak, to best carry the message. This is the fun part –the part where we get creative! We create a setting, the circumstances, the characters and a basic storyline.

Colorize combines the stories of three characters, whom all cross paths with each other at some point, but they pretty much live separate lives. We decided touse the metaphor of color, as opposed to black andwhite, to symbolize hope and life. The concept of theshow is enhanced through video, so every time cir-cumstances in the life of a character causes him/her tolose hope, they turn black and white on video. Astheir hope is restored, they turn color.

Now that we have the basic storyline, the read workstarts: writing a script, choreographing about sixdances, multiple video shoots, composing music, andthen teaching all of that to our 40 students…

And then we have a show! Four shows, and then wecan tour! Four touring weeks, that makes a touringcycle. Four touring cycles, and the year is over, and theministry happened, and then we start all over again.
