PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
Colyton High School – A
Positive School
Term 2 has been an exciting term
of building upon the many
initiatives being implemented at
Colyton High School including our teambuilding
activities in Term 1. As part of our PBL
implementation and revised assembly structures
Year Advisers, supported by teachers, have been
running mini team building activities throughout
the term. We thank our Year Advisers, led by our
HT Wellbeing Mrs Gorman and their Deputy
Principals for the very hard work they contribute
to supporting their year cohort towards
performing as a cohesive unit. We are very
pleased with the progress of students to date but
understand there is still much work to do as we
continue to build Colyton High School as a
Positive School. To this effect we have engaged
the services of a Positive Schools Consultant, Ms
Rosemary Glassock, who is meeting with us
regularly to plan staff professional learning
activities and student and parent initiatives so that
the whole school community can effectively
contribute. We are also working closely with our
Learning and Wellbeing Officers from the
Department of Education, Nirimba to continue to
develop our Positive Behaviour for Learning
strategies.
50th Celebrations
Term 2 also saw some amazing 50th celebrations
led by Mrs O’Connell and supported by a team of
people across the school. We enjoyed an exciting
50th fun day for staff and students at school,
culminating in a vibrant Colour Run. The
atmosphere on the day was outstanding as the
whole school came together to enjoy the day.
Faculties operated some wonderfully creative
activities to engage the students throughout the
day. What a great celebration it was! But it did not
stop there as we then held an extremely well
attended 50th Open Night where we through open our
gates to the community, past and present, welcoming
current students, staff, parents and carers as well as
those from the past, many of whom travelled long
distances and were catching up for the first time with
past friends, for a long time. There were displays of
memorabilia in the hall, which looked magnificent,
and student performances throughout the night. It
was so interesting meeting people from the first
intake in 1967, as well as the many people from the
70’s, 80’s, 90’s and 00’s and hearing their stories. And
what stories they had! Colyton HS has enjoyed being
part of a proud Colyton community for the past 50
years. The next 50 is beginning! What will be the
legacy that current students and staff leave behind?
Some Recent Achievements
As we come to the end of Term 2 it is time to reflect
on some outstanding achievements for Semester 1. It
was wonderful to be recently presenting many awards
for academic and sporting achievement at a recent
whole school assembly. Congratulations are in order
for Jireh and Jiroh Mamea, as the selections for the
2017 NSW Public Schools Urban Dance Crew have
now been completed and these two talented
performers have been picked to rehearse for and
perform at the the State Dance Festival at The
Seymour centre on 15 September and at the Schools
Spectacular on 24 and 25 November. An outstanding
achievement by both students and this maintains a
proud record of representation in these events by
Colyton HS students. Thanks, also, to Mrs Ciocca for
the ongoing support of our dance students and
contributing to their success. We cannot wait to see
them perform this year, following their marvellous
performances last year.
Semester 1 Reports
At the time of writing this report, assessments had
been completed and Semester 1 reports were being
written and checked. Thank you for supporting your
child’s learning this semester and please, now, set the
time aside to discuss teacher comments and grades
with your son or daughter with a view to identifying
how they might improve their performance in
Semester 2. As always, if in doubt or you have

concerns arising from the reports, do not hesitate
to pick up the phone and arrange to talk to your
child’s teacher or Head Teacher. If your concerns
are across a range of subjects then it may be more
appropriate to talk to a Year Adviser, Deputy
Principal or Principal. We hope your child’s effort
this semester has been duly rewarded and
everyone has some useful feedback for further
improvement.
2018 Planning
It is time to project our thoughts towards planning
for 2018. We are currently working toward our
course offerings for Years 9 and 11, next year and
an important part of this process are the subject
selection evenings and markets for parents and
students. At these evenings and markets there are
invaluable opportunities to learn more about the
Record of School Achievement (ROSA) and the
Higher School Certificate (HSC). The rules
regarding the award of these qualifications can be
quite complex and confusing and there are now so
many different options available for study. So
the school provides opportunities to learn more
about what is on offer and how to achieve them.
We also assist students and parents through a
comprehensive subject selection process so that
we can be confident they have made good choices
and are meeting requirements for the award of the
ROSA and the HSC. Please call us if you need
help or advice. Thank you to all those teachers,
parents, students and guests who make this
process supportive and user-friendly.
Meeting Requirements
Meeting requirements for the award of the ROSA
and HSC, including the Preliminary HSC (usually
studied in Year 11) is important in order to keep
progressing forward. When your child is not
meeting requirements teachers will send letters
home and make phone calls. It is important that
these letters and calls are taken seriously as they
are indicators that all is not right and your child is
in danger of not being eligible to receive their
ROSA or HSC. When addressed early and with
swift action, more serious problems can be
averted and your child can get back on track. The
longer it takes you and your child to respond and
resolve the issues, the more in danger they are of
not receiving their award. Currently, Deputy
Principals are meeting with students and/or their
parents to discuss cases where progress is of
serious concern. If you are in doubt, please
contact us at school to discuss your concerns. It is
also important to ensure that your contact details,
including addresses and phone numbers are kept
up to date as we use them to send out letters and
make timely calls which can make all the
difference between resolving issues in time, and
not.
Colyton High is a Uniform School
Thanks to those of you that are so supportive of
the school’s uniform policy. Colyton HS is a
“uniform school” as decided by the P&C, your
forum. We enforce the wishes of the P&C. Please
encourage and support your child in the wearing
of school uniform. Contact us at school if you
have concerns or issues or need some support.
The Year 12 students have recently received and
are wearing proudly, their new senior jackets that
they designed and ordered. They look fabulous
and are very warm. A big thank you must go to
the student leaders and their Year Advisers for
putting the proposal forward and a special thank
you on behalf of the students to the P&C for
supporting it. The students are very happy and
appreciative! Watch out for the upcoming uniform
discussions and your opportunity to contribute.
P&C Thank You
A big thank you must also go the P&C for their
ongoing commitment to the school and their
financial support for students including
sponsoring school scholarships and costume
expenses for the upcoming Sydney Pacifica
performances – thanks to all the students, parents
and staff involved in making this happen too! We
thank our P&C for their tireless efforts in raising
additional funds through sustained commitment to
our successful school canteen and the school
uniform shop. Please keep supporting them as all
funds come back to supporting and educating your
children at Colyton High.
Thank you once again to all our school
community for your ongoing, invaluable support.
Colyton High School is a school going places and
our reputation in the community continues to
strengthen with your help.
MR D BUTLER
PRINCIPAL
DEPUTY PRINCIPAL’S
REPORT
I hope that this article finds
everyone in good health and spirits.
Half the year has gone by and in
that time so many things have
happened that have had a very positive impact on
our school community. The celebration of our 50th
anniversary was the pinnacle of the school year to
date. It is an honour to be part of an institution
that has been shaping the lives of many young
adults over the decades. I hope to play a small part
in shaping the young lives entrusted in our care.
The evening reiterated the belief that students,
through their hard work will be successful
irrespective of where they go to school or what
their postcode is. I had the privilege of meeting
many students on this night who were very proud
of their high school education and what they had
achieved in their lives. I am of the belief that all
students are capable of achieving their best, they
just need assurance and guidance which is the job
of the educators. Our school has many great
educators who go above and beyond the call of
duty to improve the educational outcome of all
students. I am proud of our teaching staff and the
job that they are doing. We will continue to build
the capacities of our students so they become
confident and successful young adults.
The homework centre is an avenue that our
students are utilising very effectively to improve
their learning. It gives me great pleasure to see so
many students, spending their time focussed on
completing their assessments or revising content.
The number of senior students in the library is
increasing every week. The homework centre has
a very positive vibe, full of excitement and an
enjoyment of learning. I would like to thank staff
who give up their time to be part of the team and
help students without any expectation of reward.
As an avid learner, who has a vision of spreading
the importance of learning to all our students,
celebrating success, establishing high expectations
and taking pride in one’s achievement, I am
ecstatic by the buzz of learning and the improved
knowledge of students which will translate into
great reports. The catch phrase that I often use:
“the purpose of school is learning which has the
ability to transform lives” is coming to fruition.
The majority of the Year 10 cohort have had a
very good start to the year and I hope that they
continue to make responsible choices. This cohort
have a very exciting time ahead of them. They
have graduation, end of Year 10 dinner and dance,
subject selection, transition programs, excursions
and many other extra-curricular activities to look
forward to. Some students need to work very hard
to successfully complete Stage 5 and satisfy the
course requirements to transition into Year 11.
The path into Year 11 is not an automatic one,
students need to meet the minimum requirements
which means that some students will need to
resolve their “N-Award” which they have
accumulated because they have not completed
assigned tasks in subjects. The students have been
given many reminders that they need to complete
tasks in Stage 5 (Year 9 and Year 10) to move
onto Year 11. If you have a child in Year 10,
please have a chat with them about their work to
date or give me a call. My desire is that all
students meet the course requirements and move
on to Stage 6. They have to earn their place in
Year 11 and not be given a free pass. It will not be
fair nor equitable to all the other students who
have worked hard and earned their place.
The Year 7 cohort, who have been entrusted the
task of setting the tone of the school for the future
years to come, have very successfully accepted the
challenge. This cohort of students have excelled in
their responsibilities, both in and out of the
classroom. The vast majority of the students are
very responsible young adults who uphold our
SMART values and excel in their behaviour and
schoolwork. I have great confidence in this group
of students and I know that they will work with
me to make our school a great school. I take this
opportunity to thank the many parents who share
my vision of excellence in learning, high
expectations, full school uniform, no phone in
class (on silent and out of sight) and working to
the best of their abilities. I have seen many
positives as a result of setting very clear directions
and expectations and I hope that we will continue
to see growth. A small cohort of students needs a
little help in establishing boundaries and
following our SMART values. I believe that these
students, with guidance and support, will settle
into the routine of high school and be successful
in their learning. I will continue to work with
these students to reach achievable goals.
Colyton High School is a UNIFORM SCHOOL,
as such we expect all students to be in full school
uniform. A school shirt is not full school uniform.
I believe that uniform sets the tone of the school,
if we dress for the part then we will perform the
part. It is vital that all parents support us in our
endeavour to change the attitude of our students in
regards to uniform and to set a tone for our school.
We live in a society where how we look defines
us so I want our students to look the part and dress
smartly so they can send a message to the
community that we are smart learners. Winter is a
challenging time and students need to dress
warmly. We will accept Plain Black Tracksuit
pants as uniform. No logos or prints. Bright
jumpers will be exchanged for a school jumper.
Students who are completely out of uniform will
be referred to a Deputy Principal who will contact
home. Our school is willing and able to help
students get into uniform, so please see us so we
can work something out. I thank the parents,
especially of Year 7 cohort who have worked with
me to ensure that these students are in uniform.
We have to start somewhere and it is this cohort
that are helping us change the culture of our
school. We have a very bright future ahead of us
so let’s all work together to achieve it.
I look forward to meeting many parents during the
course of the year.

Quality Time Spent With Students This term enabled me to leave my office and spend some time with students,
exploring the many different facets of their lives as they journey through school. As a
Deputy Principal, I am very fortunate that I am still able to teach a job that I love
dearly. Teaching enables me to establish a very different relationship with students and staff. This
relationship enables me to provide effective feedback to students and share my knowledge accumulated over
the many years. The classroom is a very dynamic place where many futures are envisaged and career paths
established. I was fortunate to accompany students to Jenolan Caves, Penrith Lakes Educational Centre,
University of Western Sydney- Hawkesbury Campus, University of Sydney and Oz Gala Day. These days
enabled me to spend quality time with students, gain a different perspective of them, enhance students’
comprehension of concepts and build social connections as well as team work. The days and the activities
were very successful and enabled us to improve our knowledge. It was a very positive experience by all,
despite my Junior Gala Team not reaching the semi-finals of Oz Tag.

Colyton Birthday Celebrations
On May 5 the whole school celebrated its 50th Birthday. The morning started with an exciting whole school
drone photo. The students and staff stood together to form a 50 symbol on the back field, while a drone took
videos and images.
The senior students were the first group to participate in the color run. The students successfully ran
the obstacle course a number of times, while the teachers enjoyed throwing the Holi powder over them.
The junior students were enjoying themselves at the back of the school. The back of the school had laser tag,
bungee lanes, trampolines, an inflatable obstacle course, karaoke, photo booths, Henna and many more
stalls.
The second half of the day, all of
the students swapped to the
other area and participated in the
activities. It was a wonderful
day of celebrations, with both
students and teachers coming
together to celebrate our
school’s 50th anniversary.
Students collected sponsorship
money for this event and as a
group they raised $4,211.00.
The following students made
outstanding contributions, John
Higgs, Jordynne Powell,
Lachlan Pabian, Jessica
Stevenson, Joshua Stevenson,
Anthony Balaz, Jayde Clements,
Brent Jackson, Johnson Bell,
Breanna Smith, Katelyn Kos,
Angel Russelle,and Failagi

money will go towards school
improvements that the students
have suggested. MRS W O’CONNELL

50th Anniversary ‘Open Night’ On May 19, Colyton High School opened its doors to the past and present
members of the Colyton community. Staff and students from the past 50 years
attended the evening to reminisce about their times spent at Colyton High School.
There were a number of classrooms and areas of the school open for viewing.
Guests were invited to walk around the school and view the changes and
improvements from the past 50 years.
Our focal point of the night was the school’s Hall where students performed music and dance pieces
throughout the night. Along with the performances in the Hall there were also a number of photo and trophy
displays. The attendees on the night enjoyed looking through the photos and trophy displays along with
talking to old friends.
A very big thank you to all of the students and staff who helped on the night. Mr Brown and Ms Bruin catered
for our guests along with students who volunteered their own time. Mr Lane and Mrs Ciocca organised a
wonderful night of performances, along with the other members of staff who attended the evening.

Year 8 History - Polynesian Expansion across the Pacific
Year 8 have been learning about the Polynesian Expansion across the Pacific this term. We have been
engaged in learning about the various aspects of the many different cultures, including tattoos, food,
mythology and social hierarchy etc. One aspect that many classes have focused on are the theories
surrounding their origins. This has required students developing their skills associated with the different
theories regarding how the people of these islands arrived there. Their study has involved historical theories
based on boat designs and human remains. As a result, many students have attempted to build boats of a
similar design to demonstrate their understanding. We are glad that Y8 have enjoyed this study this year.
Year 10
Year 10 spent a week completing Year 11 taster lessons in preparation for their senior school subject
selections.
Year 10 were given the chance to have mini lessons about the variety of Year 11 subjects that HSIE offers in
the senior school. All students were given the chance to partake in a lesson about Ancient History, Modern
History, Legal Studies, Business Studies, Society and Culture, Business Services and Retail. It was great to
see so many of our students enjoying the variety of lessons.
The following are students involved in a ‘Choc Chip Archaeology’ activity designed to use strategy and
archaeological techniques. It was also fun to be able to eat the ‘evidence’ at the end.

Debating Team Premier’s Debating Challenge for Years 7 & 8 Students
The Premier’s Debating Challenge is open to government schools throughout NSW,
with age divisions for teams from Year 5 all the way up to Year 12. Teams entering the challenge compete
in a round-robin series of debates against nearby schools, with the winners going on to compete at regional
and state level to determine the eventual state champions.
This year, our Year 7 and Year 8 students have been given the opportunity to represent our school at the
Premier’s Debating Challenge competition. On Tuesday May 30, 2017, we hosted our first round against
Chiefly College, Dunheved, with Colyton successfully affirming the topic “That single sex schools should
be scrapped”.
There are 10 students who have given up most of their recess and lunch to prepare for the Premier’s
Debating Challenge. They do not know the topic until an hour before the actual debate, then they get an hour
to prepare before debating.
Pictured below is our team that won against Chiefly College, Dunheved Campus. Our first speaker was
Alicia Dean, our second speaker was Kane Rimmer, our third speaker was Joshua Lee and our team advisor
was Diana Jouhar. A big thank you to our Year 7 students who also participated. Fantasia Lali
(Chairperson), Liam Menadue (Timekeeper), Patrick Mannix (Welcome to Country) and Luke Manea for
helping out with the catering.
Our next debate will be against Crestwood High on Wednesday June 28, 2017 and we would like to wish
our team all the best. Our team for round 2 will be Alicia Dean, Emily Payne, Joshua Lee and Jessica
Stevenson. Our reserves will be Diana Jouhar, Fantasia Lali, Jazmyn Joy and Kane Rimmer.

African Leadership Program
From the deep traditions of Africa comes a joyous and exciting program that immerses
students in art and rhythm. The African Leadership Program takes place every Week A
Tuesday periods one and two. The program has been structured to develop the important
skills young people need including, perseverance, resilience, education, skill
development, group participation, team building, confidence, self-esteem, leadership and community
connection.
The school, staff and community have a significant role to play in supporting students, young adults and
families of cultural and language diverse (CALD) backgrounds. The African Leadership Program is a
welcoming and approachable environment that helps to build a sense of belonging and trust for students and
their families. We cultivate a culture of respect having a nurturing environment and are inclusive of
difference amongst the whole school community.
Here are some photos of the students working together on a collaboration art piece that once completed will
be placed up in the school grounds.
Keep up the amazing work. So proud of you all!

LOTE Year 9 Japanese On May 16, our Year 9 Japanese elective class went on an excursion to Sydney. Here are some
comments confirming what a fantastic day it was:
Our Year 9 Japanese class went to the Japan Foundation where we wore beautiful yukatas (happy coats)
and did a traditional dance called the Bonodori. (Megan)
The Japanese excursion was a fun experience and I hope to do it again. (Seth)
It was very different because we tried on traditional clothing and learned a lot more than we had learned
in class and we got a lot more involved. (Zac)
We used fake yen to play games like fishing, hoop throwing and throwing a ball into the holes. It was a
very good excursion. (Brent)
We ate lunch at the food court, and tried things like sushi, noodles and rice, and finished off with a trip to the
Daiso (Japanese discount store), where we got rid of a lot of money on fun Japanese things.
Year 8 Japanese We have had a good start to the year in Japanese. We have been learning how to say hello to each other, say
the numbers in Japanese and even the Japanese alphabet (Hiragana). We have also learnt about their festivals,
one of which is called Children’s Day. The carp-shaped windsock above the café are to represent this special
day.

Museum of Contemporary Art Year 12 Visual Art and Photography students enjoyed a great day at the Museum of
Contemporary Art, Circular Quay, learning and experiencing contemporary art!
We attended a brilliant exhibition by the French-Algerian artist Kader Attia (born 1970).
He works across diverse media including collage, photography, video, sculpture and
installation. Exploring ideas around cultural exchange, appropriation, and the tangled relationship between
cultures and the West in the wake of decolonisation, Attia articulates theories of ‘injury’, ‘repair’ and
‘reparation’ through his practice. So relevant for today!
Such a great day in spectacular Sydney.

the best.
OZ-TAG Gala Day On Tuesday May 30, 50 students were involved in representing Colyton High School in the
Western Sydney Oz-Tag Gala day held at Jamison Park, Penrith. We had 4 teams represented
on the day. Year 7/8 Boys coached by Miss White, 7/8 Girls coached by Mrs Fulton, 9/10 Boys Coached by
Miss Ciacciarelli and 9/10 Girls coached by Miss Ransom.
All teams played well throughout the day, representing the school with great school spirit and
sportsmanship. All teams supported each other throughout the day by cheering and encouraging each other,
which was great to see. Special mention goes to the following students:
7/8 Girls MVP – Destiny Orake
7/8 Boys MVP - Rayshawn Russell
9/10 Girls MVP - Metua Moeroa

Careers Corner Welcome to the mid-year edition of the Careers section of the school newsletter. We
have some exciting work ready programs coming up for our students. These programs will give the students
the required skills to become ready for work.
The transition from secondary school to further education, employment or training is one of the most
important in setting students up for success in life. For over ten years, the Beacon Foundation’s High
Impact Programs have been providing an opportunity for students to prepare for a successful transition from
school to the development of competencies in a range of ‘21st Century Skills’, such as communication,
collaboration, initiative, leadership, teamwork, networking and social skills.
Approximately five members of the local business community will attend this event to participate in
activities, which will provide students with a valuable opportunity to develop connections with local people,
hear directly from them about their workplace and their personal experiences and hone the newly acquired
skills learnt through the course.
We had a very successful school to work transition program last week when our Year 10 students completed
their subject selection process. Our career search activities helped our students to make the right selection of
the subjects successfully.
Our students are also attending the Western Sydney Career expo at Homebush to enhance their knowledge
and have more exposure to the other opportunities in different areas. Students will get the chance to meet the
training and apprenticeship representatives in person to get firsthand information.

Office Duty In Semester 2 Year 7 students will be rostered to do ‘office duty’ in the front office. This will involve two
students from the same class spending one whole day out of class. Over the course of the Semester it is
possible that your child would be rostered on 3 or 4 times.
This is an invaluable experience for your child as he/she will undertake a variety of tasks in the office. The
school office receives many requests, often from parents, involving the delivery of messages all around our
very large school. Without the assistance of your child undertaking this school service these messages and
other important matters could not be carried out effectively.
Students attending school on their rostered office duty day are expected to bring a book to read in between
messages. When they return to class the next day their teachers will provide them with the school work they
may have missed. If you have any objection to your child participating in this role, please write to the Year
7 Year Adviser, Mr Lane.
We’re currently developing a 10 year
strategy for how to manage and improve our sport, recreation, play and open spaces across the whole of Penrith.
Tell us what you love about Penrith’s sport, recreation, play and open spaces, and what you’d like to see added or improved.
The survey is available until 16 June.
