River Flooding
Euston is looking a whole lot
greener along both highway
entrances as the highly
anticipated tree avenues have
now been planted.
With thanks to the Euston
ClubGrants program, Balranald
Shire Council was awarded a
generous sum for the purpose of
beautifying the township
entrances.
Thanks also to the Euston
Beautification Committee who
coordinated the planting of the
trees.
In total 50 trees have been
planted in the road reserves
along the Sturt Highway.
The tree species used is
Corymbia ficifolia ‘Wild
Sunset’, commonly known as
West Australian Dwarf Gum,
which at full height will reach
between 4-6m only and
provide beautiful foliage all
year round.
Council would like to thank the
Euston Club for their support in
funding this project.
Euston Tree Avenue
Murrumbidgee and Murray River
flooding has now peaked and will
begin to subside over the coming
weeks.
In Balranald, the Murrumbidgee
River peaked on November 9th
with a height of 6.91m recorded
at the Balranald Weir.
In Euston, the Murray River
peaked on November 14th with a
height of 9.05m at the Euston
Weir.
Minor to moderate flooding is still
occurring in the Lachlan River,
the peak has not yet reached
Oxley. This is anticipated to
occur around mid-to-late
December

What a busy month it has been. My congratulations to all the senior students in our Shire upon the completion of your exams. To the Class of 2016, on behalf of Council I would like to wish you the very best in all your future ambitions. The weather for the Balranald Derby Day could not have been better. It was a wonderful event with a fantastic turn out. Even better to see was local horses winning and placing in their races, congratulations to local trainers on a fantastic effort. I am pleased to report that despite all the water flowing into our townships the flooding has not caused any substantial damage and no houses have been lost. Councils levee banks held up well, and although staff had sandbags at the ready in the event that flooding exceeded forecast heights, these were not needed, and the water is now receding. Coming into the festive season I would like to wish all our shire residents and visitors a happy and prosperous Christmas. May your holidays be filled with family and fun. For all those travelling on our roads, please travel carefully.

Free LLS Workshop
Around the Shire there are currently a number of
roadworks projects in progress.
Maintenance grading is well underway in readiness
for the coming grain harvest season. Recent rains
have also assisted Council to pursue their capital
works program. Works have been essentially
completed on the Prungle-Mail Road and are
currently underway on the Tillara Road, as well as
the Balranald-Ivanhoe Road.
Council has recently contracted Primal Surfacing to
undertake road resurfacing works within the
Balranald township. These works are necessary
maintenance to prolong the life of the roads.
Balranald Motorcycle Club would like to thank
everyone who supported them during the 2016
racing season. It takes an amazing effort to bring
top quality Motox Racing to our town and they
have been totally blown away by the generosity of
people who have donated time, materials and
money.
The club’s major fundraising raffle is on again with
a kid’s 50cc Honda motorbike as first prize and
$200 meat voucher second prize. Tickets are
available from Balranald Takeaway or online at
www.visitbalranald.com.au/balranald-motox-racing.
Join them for the raffle draw at the
Ex-Serviceman’s Club, 6pm on December 16th.
The clubs presentations are on Saturday 17th
December to be held at Regatta Beach which is
currently flooded. If access is not restored they will
advise of an alternative venue. They will also use
this opportunity to hold the club’s Annual General
Meeting, this is just a formality as all positions
have nominations for 2017 but anyone wanting to
join the committee as a member or helper your
input would be greatly appreciated.

Storm Damages Water Supply at Euston
On the evening of Friday November 11th, the major storm in our region
caused an electrical shutdown on Euston’s water supply. However
thanks to Council staff member at Euston, Peter Mattschoss, and
contractors from Charnock Electrical who worked tirelessly around the
clock the risk of water supply failure was averted by the Sunday.
The moment of impact was captured by CCTV.
Celebrate in Balranald! Saturday 31st December At Greenham Park Hall From 7pm till 12.30am
A fully-funded plan to address a range of issues highlighted by the NSW Government has already been completed and sent to the Minister for Local Government on Friday 18th November. The plan was developed through the combined efforts of councillors and senior staff, after Minister Paul Toole on 8th November gave notice he was considering imposing a Performance Improvement Order. The Minister’s warning follows a report by the Office of Local Government, which identified a range of procedural, policy and other issues which could hinder Council’s performance and ability to serve the Balranald community. The plan Council finalised demonstrates just what Council can do when we all work together to achieve a common goal. We’re all on the same page when it comes to delivering the best possible results for the people of Balranald, and the efficiency with which this plan was developed demonstrates that. The Minister’s Notice of Intention gave council 14 days to respond to his letter and 6 weeks to provide an implementation plan addressing the findings and recommendations of the report. However, the newly-elected Council and its staff were so committed to improvement that Balranald’s response was received by the Government by Friday 18th November. Council is confident that this plan will not only help us address those challenges, but ensure we are able to continue to support our community at a local level. A copy of the Minister’s Letter and Council’s response can be found on Council’s website www.balranald.nsw.gov.au
