new public services based on the relationships between citizen and government
What is the emotional state passen-
gers can be expected to find themsel-
ves in by the time breakfast is served?
The KVD design team took this as the
starting point for the development of
a range of intercontinental economy
class inflight meals for KLM.
inflight meals to fit passengers’ emotional needs
How should the government set about improving and innovating the public
services we all use? The Dutch ministry of the Interior and Kingdom relations
approached KVD to create a new perspective on the way public services are desig-
ned. The resulting framework is applied in both national government departments
(e.g. organ donor registration) as well as local authorities (e.g. dog taxes, social
care services).

human oriented sustainable transport (HOST)
Which strategy should an academic research
group adhere to in designing their pro-
prietary inventions in order to communicate
their ambitions to market innovative, animal
friendly imaging equipment? KVD designed
the Uspect II Gamma camera, an ultra-high-
resolution imaging device for molecular
small animal imaging.
innovative imaging equipment new kiosk retail concept
KVD designed the new Kiosk, a self service retail formula
located in train stations and on platforms. The concept
and layout of the Kiosk is based on five different roles of
people in public space.
The European partnership project HOST aimed to explore
sustainable urban mobility from a human-driven perspective
instead of designing on the basis of available technology.
The project result is an innovative concept of vehicle ar-
chitecture for the transport of persons and goods in urban
environments.

redesign ANWB finger posting HEINEKEN beertender - home draught system
For over fifty years the blue and white ANWB signs
have been showing the way in The Netherlands. At the
end of the nineties npk was honoured to receive the
assignment for a redesign, that suited the identity of
the ANWB (The Royal Dutch Touring Club).
The result provides considerable improvements with
regard to uniformity, legibility and functionality. The
old arrow-shaped sign has given way to a rounded ver-
sion, with a separate graphic arrow. The existing po-
les were not destroyed, but used as a starting point in
the design. The new components are, where possible,
made of durable materials such as stainless steel and
aluminium. Another important aspect is the energy
consumption. By using so-called 'long life lamps' and
special electronic equipment, some 50% less energy is
required for the illuminated signposts throughout the
country.
The best draught beer in your own home!
With BeerTender, Heineken has succeeded
admirably in creating a new way of enjoying
a refreshing glass of beer… BeerTender
cools the beer to just the right temperature
of 6 to 8˚ C and the pressure is such that the
draught beer always has a fine head. The
capacity of the Heineken keg, which was
specially designed for BeerTender, is four
litres. After it has been opened, the beer
can be kept for at least three weeks.
The development of BeerTender was a
npk turn-key project, undertaken in close
co-operation with Krups: design and engi-
neering from the first concept to the last
screw.
The npk graphic design team was responsi-
ble for the product graphics. They also cre-
ated the design for the quick reference card
and the user instructions. Extensive user re-
search was conducted in various countries
for the design of the quick reference card,
which consists entirely of illustrations.

dog service mobiletwin letter box
The new PTT Post eye-catcher is excel-
lently suited to the allure of the company:
reliable and customer-friendly. The new twin
letterbox has 50% more capacity and is more
burglar-proof. The communication has also
become more lucid. An electronic display
panel between the two openings indicates
when the next collection will take place.
Customer information is presented immedi-
ately underneath.
The functional design consists of fewer
components and has been constructed to
accommodate technological evolution.
In 2007, all the ‘old’ letterboxes will be
replaced by the new model.
The Wall Dog Service Station previ-
ously designed by npk encourages
dog owners to clean up after their
dogs. As an addition to the service,
the Dog Service Mobile has been
developed to improve the quality
of life in urban public spaces even
more.
The trailer is connected to a Seg-
way, an electrically driven personal
transporter. The service employee
who works with the Dog Service
Mobile takes away the dog dirt with
a special tool, freezes any possible
residue with nitrogen and collects
it in a waste bin, thus keeping the
streets and parks tidy.
toolkit
The hundred kilometre long
HSL-Zuid section Antwerpen-
Amsterdam connects the
Netherlands with the European
network of high-speed rail links.
In close cooperation, npk and
the project organisation HSL-
Zuid have developed a design
strategy for the HSL toolkit.
This ‘toolkit’ includes baffle
plate systems, overhead wire
pylons, fencings, modular frame
elements and escape provisions.
The different “toolkit” elements
have a clear mutual relationship
and identity of their own. Atten-
tion was also paid to technique,
safety, environment-friendliness
and endurance. The ‘toolkit’
forms a guide line for all the dif-
ferent parties that work on the
development and realisation of
the HSL-Zuid.

Dorel | Quinny Zapp - strollerRevab | Axi -wheelchairwww.vanderveerdesigners.nl
Collapsed, it is the world’s smallest buggy (69x27x30cm);
unfolded, it is one of the most spacious and comfortable.
The Zapp has protective tubing that curves around the child. This
same tubing alludes to windsurf boards and skateboards in its
design, creating an energetic character.
The fabric does not wrap round the tubing as would otherwise
be expected; instead a beaded edge along the fabric is slid into
a groove in the aluminium. Thus the tubing remains visible as
does the dynamic design.
The Axi is a wheelchair for public spaces:
hospitals for example. Van der Veer
Designers drew inspiration from airport
luggage trolleys.
The wheelchairs can nest into each other.
In its default stance, the Axi’s brake is on.
When the handle is depressed, it rides.
Since the wheelchair has the looks of a
conference chair, there is less of a stigma
associated with its use, making it stand
out from its competition.

Burgers | New Look - bicycle bagsGMG | Yepp Maxi - bicycle seat
In close collaboration with Burgers Lederwaren,
Van der Veer Designers has been developing new
bicycle pannier bags for the New Look brand.
The New Look bag collection ranges from univer-
sally functional bicycle pannier bags to trendy fa-
shionable products that appeal to a wide array of
users and feature a variety of functions.
Trendy at the product level, but also equally so
in the areas of design, branding and marketing.
A revolution in the bicycle pannier bag sector.
Gazelle | styling and graphic design
How do you cater to consumer demands? Van der Veer
Designers has developed a successful method for this. This
allows Gazelle to annually launch a balanced collection of
bicycles.
Aided by colour collages and colour combinations, we visualise
the trends in colour. We suggest both colours and graphic styl-
ing for every model.
We then make prototypes complete with stickers of the graph-
ics. This creates a good impression of what the bicycle will look
like.
The design brief from GMG: give dated child
bicycle seats a new look and put GMG back on
the map in doing so.
Van der Veer Designers designed the Yepp Maxi,
a rear mounted children’s bicycle seat. The Yepp
Maxi can accomodate children up to 22 kg (up
to approximately 6 years old).
The design is innovative and distinctive. Made
from EVA (best known for its use in Crocs©
shoes), lightweight material that is comfor-
table and shock absorbing. The soft foam
material is completely non-absorbent. You can
fasten the Yepp Maxi into place or remove it
with the click of a button. The seat features an
integrated anti-theft lock.
