Algebraalgebra from (Arabic) al-jabr -
al - meaning the restoration (and the compensation), addition (and subtraction)
jabr – meaning bone-setting, restoration
algebrista is a bonesetter or “restorer” of bones. A barber of medieval times called himself an algebrista because he did that on the side, hence the red and white striped barber poles

GradingHomework Students are expected to complete homework as assigned. Points are earned for each question with the correct answer and work shown. Work not shown will not earn credit for that question. A student may submit a ticket for an excused (EX) grade on the assignment. Late work will not be accepted. In the case of an excused absence, students will have one class period to complete the work assigned on the day of the absence. Work due the day of the absence is due upon student’s return.
![Page 38: Composition Notebook Outline](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062517/56812cd7550346895d919313/html5/thumbnails/38.jpg)
GradingExams Tests are given at the end of each unit. Retesting, if available, will be done outside class time and within two weeks of original testing date. To be eligible for retesting, a student must have all homework for that unit completed prior to the original test. The maximum score on a retest is 80%.
Quizzes & Projects Quizzes are unannounced. They may not be made up after the date given, but may be taken in advance, before/after school on the day of the quiz. If absent for a quiz, no grade will be recorded.
Miscellaneous may include participation, preparation, and activity-related grades.
![Page 39: Composition Notebook Outline](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062517/56812cd7550346895d919313/html5/thumbnails/39.jpg)
Grading
Final Exam: If you have perfect attendance (no tardies, only “S” absences) and a B or better, you will be eligible to take the final exam early (Pre-AP and AP classes) or be exempt (regular classes). VGHS policies overrule the previous statement if they are contradictory. Students absent more than 10 minutes during the class (either tardy or checked out early) will receive an absence for that day. You may attempt if you wish to raise your grade.
