These notes are intended to provide information and
guidance on standards, materials, nishes and the handling
and storage of the products supp lied by Top Tubes Electrical.
We hope this section will assist stockists of our products,
their customers, including electrical contractors, and the
consultants responsible for preparing specications. Please
contact us to seek further assistance or to raise any specic
queries you may have.
Materials and FinishesTop Tubes Electrical conduit ttings and conduit tube are
manufactured from appropriate grades of steel, malleable
ron or brass, where necessary protected by zinc or
paint coatings.
Galvanised CoatingsUnprotected iron and steel will usually rust rapidly when
exposed to moisture and air. Zinc coatings prevent this
primarily by acting as a tough barrier between these metals
and the environment. Even if there is minor damage to the
galvanised coating then sacricial erosion of the zinc will
continue to inhibit corrosion.
The life of a coating depends primarily on the thickness of
the coating and the rate at which it is eroded, both usually
expressed in microns or (millionths of a metre). The
Galvanizers Association 44 (0) 121 355 8838 denes the
term galvanised to mean protection by hot dip galvanising
and can provide an authoritative response to any questions
you may have concerning galvanising.
Rates of erosion of galavanised coatings reect a number of
factors primarily the presence of moisture and atmospheric
pollutants such as sulphur dioxide (SO2). In warm dry
conditions loss of zinc may be less than 0.1 micron a year
but in coastal, marine or polluted environments this rises
signicantly and may exceed 5 microns a year. The results
of research undertaken by the Galvanizers Association in the
UK and Republic of Ireland in 1998-2000 and published as
The Zinc Millennium Map conrm that, as a consequence of
reduced SO2 levels in the atmosphere, galvanised coatings
typically last up to three times longer than in the 1970s and
n the UK rates of erosion rarely exceed 1.5 microns a year.
It is important to understand the different types of zinc
coating available.
Hot dip galvanising after manufacture involves immersing
the article in molten zinc after all production processes,
other than tapping of threads, have been completed. It
provides the greatest amounts of protection and is used on
Top Tubes Class 4 conduit tube (typical zinc thickness 50
microns) and most cast products including circular conduit
boxes (typical zinc thickness above 80 microns). The
external bore of the Class 3 conduit tube supplied by Top
Tubes is protected by an in line hot dip galvanising process
which can be precisely controlled resulting in a very smooth
and uniform nish with an excellent appearance.
Pre-galvanised or mill galvanised steel is coated at the steel
mill by a hot dip process. Here the zinc coating thickness
is typically just under 20 microns and may be disrupted by
subsequent manufacturing processes. Top Tubes Electrical
products may use mill galvanised steel to protect products
such as box lids where galvanising after manufacture
might cause distortion or have poor appearance. Top Tube
Electrical do not supply pre galvanised conduit tube which
does not have the continuous coating required to meet
published product standards.
Zinc plated products have a much lower zinc thickness,
typically 7-8 microns which is applied electrolytically. It is
used to protect components such as fasteners and nipples
where other methods are not practical.
Storage of ConduitNewly galvanised articles have a bright, shiny surface nish
although this rapidly weathers to a matt dull appearance
as the protective patina develops. Ideally galvanised
products, in particular when newly galvanised should be
stored in warm dry conditions, preferably under cover. It
is important to prevent freshly galvanised steel becoming
wet, particularly if air is not free to circulate, since these
conditions lead to formation of a white powdery deposit
know as wet storage stain or white rust. Should this occur
the deposits can easily be removed by mild abrasion. The
reduction in the zinc coating thickness is rarely signicant
and can be easily checked with an electronic thickness
gauge to conrm that the anticipated maintenance free
period remains adequate.
StandardsThe products supplied by Top Tubes Electrical comply with all relevant National, European
and International Standards. National Standards are typically based on dimensions
and detailed descriptions, whereas later European and International Standards specify
performance under dened test conditions. Both approaches are therefore useful.
BS 31 : 1940
Covers conduit and ttings produced to imperial (inch) sizes with Whitworth form screw
threads. 1 and 2 products supplied by Top Tubes Electrical comply with BS 31.
Please contact us if equivalent metric size products are required.
BS 4568 : Part 1 and Part 2 : 1970
These national standards cover the supply of metric product incl uding the most popular
20mm, 25mm and 32mm sizes and remain the best source of detailed dimensional
information on these products. Part 2 includes standards sheets which cover the
main product groups. Top Tubes Electrical products comply with these sheets for
example, small circular boxes sheet 4, large circular boxes sheet 5, distance saddles
sheet 23.
BS EN 50086 Series
This family of European standards was drawn up to cover conduit systems and was
ultimately intended to replace national standards. They employ dened tests to cover
measurement of parameters such as resistance to compression and impact strength
with graded classications which allow the standard to cover both metal products and
plastic equivalents. It should be noted that many plastic equivalents to metal conduit
systems are less strong, may be subject to more restricted temperature installationlimits or could prove problematic under re conditi ons. Top Tubes Electrical products
typically exceed the performance required to meet the most stringent mechanical and
