Opportunities in Banking Sector
India is in the brink of economic evolution. Banking sector is one of the primary sectors to provide
support for this growth. The Indian banking system consists of 26 public sector banks, 25 private
sector banks, 43 foreign banks, 56 regional rural banks, 1,589 urban cooperative banks and 93,550
rural cooperative banks, in addition to cooperative credit institutions. Public-sector banks control
nearly 80 percent of the market. Banking sector index has grown at a compounded annual rate
of over 51 per cent since 2001, due to which the Banking Industry has been a major job provider.
Within the next ? ve years, the number of banking jobs is projected to increase by almost 7.5 lakh
units . By December 2015, the total number of employees in Scheduled commercial bank was
1,171,426; with State Bank of India & Associates having 280,818 employees. With scheduled
commercial banks poised to add approximately 25,000 jobs in 2015-16, it never looked better to
join the banking sector.
Why Banking - as Career?
Career Path: Bank of? cers enjoy a very well de? ned career path and are exposed to many areas
of expertise. One of the most illustrious example is Arundhati Bhattacharya. Joining SBI as a PO in
1977, she has helmed positions such as Corporate Development Of? cer and Deputy Managing
Director before becoming the Chairperson of SBI in 2013. This might be the reason a few thousand
opening every year attract lakhs of application. Please see below to understand a generic career
progression of an of? cer.
Why Professional Guidance or Training
The Institute of Banking Personnel Selection Common Written Exam (CWE) and SBI PO exam are
conducted once every year. The recruitment in private, public, co-operative and rural banks in
India is done with the help of this two-tier examination system, followed by a rigorous interview
procedure. As per of? cial declarations of SBI during result announcement, it is revealed that about
17 lakhs to 20 lakhs aspirants apply for 1500 to 2500 openings every year. Normally number of
candidates shortlisted for Mains examination is 20 times the number of vacancies. Finally, the
number of candidates shortlisted for interviews are 3 times the number of vacancies.
The questions coming in different sections of IBPS CWE PO/MT or SBI PO follow similar pattern,
except the level of dif? culty of question coming in SBI PO paper are easy to moderately dif? cult
With a high ? ltering ratio, aspirants need professional guidance to maximize attempts and to
increase the level of accuracy.
