Food Organics and Garden Organics waste service launches next monthWe are just weeks away from the launch of Council’s new Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) kerbside bin collection, one of Boroondara’s biggest service enhancements in decades.

FOGO is for properties that use Council kerbside collection services and is being rolled out in two phases. From Monday 4 May, residents in single-dwelling properties and units in blocks of up to three can put food and garden waste in the same bin, diverting an estimated 19,000 tonnes of waste away from landfill each year. That is just over seven waste trucks per day!

Your existing green waste bin has an orange lid. This will be replaced with a lime green lid, transforming this bin into your FOGO bin. Residents without a green bin will receive a 120L FOGO bin. Households will also receive a kitchen caddy to collect food, one year’s supply of caddy liners (150) and a FOGO information pack.

Please read the information pack and check our website to see what can and cannot be placed in your FOGO bin. This will help eliminate bin contamination, and prevent bin contents from going to landfill.

For more information visit www.boroondara.vic.gov.au/FOGO or call 9278 4444.

Councillor Felicity Sinfield

It has been a busy start to 2020 for Council with some exciting local projects well underway.

We continue our advocacy to reduce the negative impacts of the North East Link project on Boroondara. Council launched legal action recently and if you would like to stay up to date please visit our website and social media accounts.

I recently caught up with our 2020 Boroondara Citizen of the Year, Mr Ted Wilkins (featured on the cover) to chat about what our community means to him. Ted was recognised for a lifetime of achievements, which have made a lasting and positive impact across Boroondara.

Many of you may know of Ted’s work, without realising the quiet achiever diligently working away in the background. For many years, Ted has generously devoted his time to numerous local organisations and groups including the Rotary Club of North Balwyn, the North Balwyn Uniting Church Council and the North Balwyn InterChurch Council’s Carols Committee (who organise the Christmas carols at Macleay Park in Balwyn).

Ted’s generosity, reliability and willingness to pass on the knowledge and experience gained from his career in insurance is valued highly by those around him. To this day, Ted continues to live an active and selfless life supporting his family, organisations and causes close to his heart. Congratulations Ted!

The new Kew Recreation project is progressing well, with works scheduled to commence on 30 June 2020. The community and members will continue to receive reciprocal rights and be able to use their membership at any of the Boroondara leisure and aquatic centres

while the Kew Recreation Centre is closed. Council is also working closely with the YMCA to develop alternative options for programming to ensure members health and wellbeing needs are met during the closure.

We all appreciate Kew’s unique historical character, so it is comforting to know that the Kew Heritage Gap Study (Amendment C294) is making progress. In January, Council received a report from the independent Planning Panel. The Panel’s recommendations will be considered by Council’s Urban Planning Special Committee. Once reviewed, Council will make a final decision on the amendment before submitting it to the Minister for Planning for final approval.

This is a challenging time for humanity, and Council will continue to support our community through the COVID-19 pandemic. We can stay connected and continue to deliver modified services in the months ahead. To read our pandemic plan, and stay up to date, please visit our website and follow us on social media for the latest local news.

Help your local wildlife this autumnDid you know Cotham Ward is home to local wildlife including the tawny frogmouth?

You can support our unique animals by creating a wildlife-friendly garden at home. You don’t need a big garden – just a small area for wildlife-friendly features.

A wildlife haven can require less maintenance and water compared to an exotic garden. If you get your neighbours involved, your gardens can become valuable stepping stones for native animals, which will be able to move safely between our parks and reserves.

You can start your native garden by planting dense shrubs where birds can shelter, nectar-rich plants for honeyeaters and daisies for butterflies. A warm, sheltered corner, including some rocks in the sun, will make your local lizards happy.

For more tips on creating your wildlife-friendly space, download our Backyard Biodiverstiy booklet at www.boroondara.vic.gov.au/wildlife-friendly-garden.To see the design and have your say please visit

Victoria Park Regional Playground The upgrade of the northern playgrounds at Victoria Park is on track with the second round of community consultation to commence in April.

This consultation is seeking feedback on a draft concept design, which was created based on community feedback received in late 2019.

The draft concept retains the much loved bluestone embankment wall and includes

new slides, a double flying fox and new swings. It also features a small water play area, a family-friendly ‘learn to ride’ bump track, parkour and fitness equipment and new nature play opportunities.

New park amenities, shade structures, picnic settings and seating will complement the new playground surrounds.

For more information visit www.boroondara.vic.gov.au/kts-upgrade or call 9278 4439.

Kew Traffic School is currently undergoing refurbishments to modernise and refresh the facilities.

Located on Cotham Road in Kew, this much-loved community facility has been providing a high-quality road safety education program to local children since 1954.

Plans for the site have been developed based on feedback from Kew Traffic School users, who told us they would like to see improved facilities.

A new party room at the Kew Traffic School will delight both parents and children,

providing a facility that better meets the needs of our community on hot summer days and wet winter days. There will be access to a covered outdoor seating area and a new bike storage shed with an attached maintenance workshop for everyone.

Kew Traffic School will reopen for private parties, the road education program and ride and play sessions later this year. Council is excited to deliver an improved experience for our community and thanks everyone who provided input. Works have now started and are estimated to be completed later this year.

North East Link updateYou will have seen reports late last year that the North East Link project was approved by the Victorian Minister for Planning and early works are now progressing for utility relocations.

In response to the Minister’s approval, Boroondara Council has launched legal action to challenge the Minister’s approval of the project.

Council maintains it was not possible to properly assess the project’s impacts using the reference design, which was nothing more than a concept. A reference design does not provide any clarity about what is actually going to be built.

We are concerned the full impacts of the project on our environment and community remain unknown and by the time designs

are finalised, it will be too late to provide input. Council is taking this stance on behalf of our community and we will provide updates as proceedings progress.

For updates visit www.boroondara.vic.gov.au/north-east-link-project.

Kew Recreation Centre project update I am excited to advise that demolition and construction of your new Kew Recreation Centre is on track to start in the middle of the year.

The state-of-the-art centre will feature four aqua spaces, including a 25-metre indoor pool with eight lanes. There will be an improved fitness studio with four spaces suitable for both low and high intensity exercise, and two indoor sports courts.

Council is working with the architect to update the design based on feedback received from the community during the two stages of consultation. The detailed elements of the design, including the interior look and feel of the centre will be available to view later this year.

To learn more about the project, please visit www.boroondara.vic.gov.au/kewrec or call 9278 4765.

Immunisation for your child Immunisation goes hand in hand

with maternal and child health care. Through the Department of Health, Council runs free, regular immunisation sessions to protect against diseases such as whooping cough and measles.

Find a session near you at www.boroondara.vic.gov.au/immunised.

For more information visit www.boroondara.vic.gov.au/mch or call 9278 4606.

This year we are celebrating the centenary of the Maternal and Child Health service in Boroondara. The first baby health centre in the City of Boroondara was opened in November 1920 at the Kew Town Hall.

Today, the service offers free health and developmental checks for children aged 0 to 4 years and information for parents. There is also a range of support groups for first-time parents, Mandarin-speaking families and those experiencing postnatal depression. Other programs available include:

• home visits for families experiencing early parenting difficulties

• a day-stay program that helps with settling, sleeping and feeding

• lactation clinics for families who need breastfeeding support.
