(from their website) Rising Sun Farm is a sustain-able family farm in upstate New York. We primarilyraise 100% pure bred, registered Black Angus cattle
that are grass-fed and raised using superior grass-fed beef product which has drawn the attention ofconsumers throughout the Tri-state area. Our Black
Angus beef products are of a higher quality andmore taste than store bought beef due to the care-ful practices and standards we use to raise our ani-
mals as well as the care put into processing theproducts. Our cattle live a comfortable, low stresslife and they are given no artificial growth hormones
or antibiotics. We also produce farm fresh eggs, chicken and pork products using similar sustain-able methods. All images featured on our website
are of Rising Sun Farm and our products producedfrom the farm.
The Farm is owned and operated by Levi Cahanwith partners Jeffrey and Sally Cahan. At a young
age, Levi developed a passion for agriculture andset a goal to own and operate his own farm. Leviattended Cornell University to obtain a BachelorsDegree in Animal Science and Masters Degree in
Agriculture Education. Levi spent a semester in NewZealand studying rotational grazing and noticed thebenefits of feeding animals on an all grass-fed diet.
This prompted his search for the perfect farm, whichhe found in Whitehall, New York.
Creating sustainability for the small-farming com-munity is vital. In order to raise awareness and edu-
cation, Levi teaches high school Agriculture in theSchuylerville, New York area. In addition to educat-ing the next generation farmers, it is important that
consumers are equally knowledgeable about theirRising Sun Farm products.
When you call or email, you’ll talk to a farmer
(or more likely the answering machine– we’re outside working. But don’t worry, we will call you back – just make sure to leave a message).
“This is in response to a request you put in your
papers about readers letting you know our favorite locally owned businesses. My favorite locally owned business is rising sun farm in Whitehall,
Washington County, New York. They have the very best beef I’ve tasted in a long time: 100% black angus, all grass fed and dry aged. they also sell
all natural pork, chicken and eggs.” J.C.

ON THE FARMby Andy Manne
This week’s ag report is sponsoredby:
HERE ARE THE BIG-PICTURE ISSUES THAT AFFECTTHE WORTH OF YOUR FARM:Soil type, drainage and location all play into the dollar value of your farmland. But as the agricultural industry becomes moreglobal, so do the factors impacting your farm.1. Global population growth. The world’s population is fore-cast to reach 9 billion by 2050. While that is a significant in-crease from the current 7 billion people.2. Water. Like population, water is not dispersed evenly aroundthe world. While water issues are more pronounced in otherareas of the world, recent prolonged U.S. drought conditionshave made water supply important.3. Wall Street. High farmland returns have attracted the inter-
est of investors, landowners, lenders and operators, adding morecompetitors at farmland auctions.4. Interest rates. For the past few years, many farmers havebeen able to purchase land with loans at extremely low interestrates.5. Shale energy. Like water, the potential of what’s under yourland might become more important than the soil on top. TheU.S. is now the largest producer of oil and gas in the world. Weare still importing, but our trade deficit is starting to shrink.6. Foreign exchange rates. A strong U.S. dollar equals morevalue for U.S. products, but it also means U.S. products aremore expensive to foreign buyers. A falling dollar equals highcommodity prices, which raise farmer profits and increases rentand land values. On the flip side, a rising-dollar environment less-ens farmland values.7. Regulation. Whether dealing with banking, ethanol mandatesor animal welfare, regulations are an invisible threat for U.S.farms. Staying up-to-date on U.S. regulations is vital.8. Wine. Why would wine make this list? Wine consumption inthe U.S. is going up about 14% per year, and in the world it isgoing up about 4% a year. Demand drives change and now the
U.S. is the largest wine consumer in the world. This is a tre-mendous shift that has led to a change in the dynamics of theprice of land. By comparison, an acre of corn valued at $12,000in the Midwest translates into an acre of grapes valued at $100,000in the heart of Napa. Land value is determined by the value of what you can produce off that land.9. The rise of China. China as a population center, buyer of U.S. goods and global player is top-of-mind for the ag industry. One of China’s biggest problems is lack of rainfall. China en-compasses 20% of the ear th’s population and 7% of the earth’swater resources. Now China i s trying to buy areas that can pro-duce food.10. Global trade. As incomes around the world have increased, especially in China and other emerging nations, trade with theU.S. has also increased. While more demand is positive for agmarkets this shift has led to stresses on agriculture. We’ve seenincreased commodity price swings and more volatility.
