Itisarealprivilegetobewri6ngyouasPresidentoftheCSSS.IwouldliketostartbythankingthosewhohavefinishedtheirtermsonCouncil:JoannWhalenasPast-President,JudithNyiranezaasEasternCouncillor,MichaelCarsonasStudentRepresenta6ve,andNewtonLupwayiasCJSSEditor.Theirmanycontribu6onsandtheircommitmenttotheCSSSaregreatlyappreciated.NewmembersofCouncilareNathanBasiliko(PresidentElect),Louis-PierreComeau(EasternCouncillor),GazaliIssah(StudentRepresenta6ve)andAnneNaeth(CJSSEditor).Con6nuingintheirrolesareNouraZiadi(PastPresident),RichFarrell(WesternCouncillor),EdithOlson(Treasurer)andAmandaDiochon(Secretaryextraodinaire).Whatagreatteam!

Alreadyithasbeenabusyyearandtherearemanyexci6ngsoilscienceini6a6vesandeventsunderway.TheyearstartedoffwithabanginearlyJanuarywiththe“SoilsAcrossLa6tudes”jointmee6ngoftheAmerican,MexicanandCanadianSocie6esofSoilScienceinSanDiego,CA.I,forone,wasveryhappytoenjoythemoreclima6callyfavorablela6tudeofthemee6ng,anditwashearteningtoseesomanyCSSSmembersinaZendance.Thereweremanyoutstandingpresenta6onsandourownmembersfiguredprominently.Congratula6onstoDr.CynthiaGrant(CSSSFellow)forherpresenta6onastheinvitedspeakerfortheLeoM.WalshDis6nguishedLectureship.Congratula6onsalsotoAsimBiswas(UniversityofGuelph)whoreceivedtheSSSAEarlyCareerAward,recognizinghismanyscien6ficcontribu6ons.Congratula6onsalsotoKenVanRees(UniversityofSaskatchewan)andClaudiaWagner-Riddle(UniversityofGuelph)whobothwereinductedasSSSAFellows–well-deservedrecogni6onindeedforboth.Itwaspar6cularlyexci6ngtoseeCSSSstudentmembersexcelatbothoralandposterpresenta6ons.TheCSSSwasabletoprovidetravelawardsof$2,000eachfor11studentmembersanditwasclearlyaworthyinvestment.AllofourCSSSstudentmembersdidawonderfuljobanditwasexci6ngtoseethemsharetheirresearchonaninterna6onalstage.Overall,itwasanimpressiveCSSSturnoutandoutcomeforsoilscien6stsfromtheCanadianla6tudes.

Alsohappeningthisyearisthecrea6onofaCanadian,opensourceIntroductorySoilSciencee-textbook.Asmalleditorialboard(MajaKrzic,FranWalley,RichFarrell,AmandaDiochon,andMaximeParé)createdchapteroutlinesfor“core”chaptersandhaveiden6fiedacadreofauthorstoleadthedevelopmentofthesechapters.UnderMajaKrzic’sleadershiponwri6ngtheproposal,weweresuccessfulinobtainingfundingfromBCcampusforthedevelopmentofthisopensourcetextbook.Nextstepsincludeiden6fyingCSSSmemberstoleadthedevelopmentofaddi6onalchaptersthatCSSSmemberscanchoosetovolunteer.Expectaddi6onalupdatesonthetextbookprojectattheupcomingCSSSAnnualmee6nginSaskatoon.

ThefinalpushisonfortheCSSSAnnualMee6ng“ProfilingChange:ACenturyofSoilScience”July9-13inbeau6fulSaskatoon,Saskatchewan(IamadmiZedlybiased–butSaskatoonreallyisagreatplacetobeinthesummer).Themee6ngcelebratesthe100thanniversaryoftheDepartmentofSoilScienceattheUofS,andthereareexci6ngcelebra6onsplanned.

ThehistoryofsoilscienceinCanadahasnotaZractedmuchaZen6onfromscholars.Thingsarechanging,however,ashistoriansandhistoricalgeographersofscience,theenvironment,andagriculturearebeginningtono6cethisoverlookedsubject.

KirstenGreer,ahistoricalgeographerandCanadaResearchChairatNipissingUniversityinNorthBay,isone.Sheisinterestedinhowandwherescien6stshaveconductedfieldwork,andhowitgeneratesideasandconcepts.OneofherrecentprojectstrackedAmericangeographerRobertSwantonPlaZasheledanexpedi6onfromTorontotoJamesBayinthe1930s.

PlaZ’sinterestinagricultureledDr.Greertobecomemorecuriousaboutsoilscience.Inthesummerof2018shevisitedOZawawithsoilscien6stDr.NathanBasilikoofLauren6anUniversitytomeetAgricultureandAgrifoodCanada(AAFC)soilscien6stsXiaoyuanGeng,leadsoilscien6stwithexper6seinpedogenesisandsoilmapping,andDaveHowleZ,asoilsdataanalyst.TheytouredofficesandstoragespacesinAAFC’sresearchfacility,theK.W.NeatbyBuilding.

Dr.Greerwasespeciallytakenwiththesoilmonoliths—productsoffieldwork,ofcourse—andcolour-codedsoilmapsthatshesawduringthattour.Iwas,coincidentally,beginningworkonasoilexhibi6on(s6llunderdevelopment)andwascurioustolearnmoreabouttheseobjects.Wedecidedtocollaborateto

seeifwecoulduncovermoreofthehistoryofCanadiansoilscience.AAFChasbeenanessen6alrepositoryforphysicalitemsanddatarelatedtothehistoryofsoilscienceinCanada-Dr.GreerquicklysawtheriskoftheseitemsremaininguncataloguedandlargelyforgoZen.

WorkingwithXiaoyuan,whoprovidedfunding,andDave,whosupportedtheproject,wearrangedforahistoricalresearchertoexamineobjectsanddocumentsstoredinAAFC’svariousbuildings.Dr.PeterAnderson,ahistoricalgeographerandhistoricalresearchconsultant,beganworkinJune,sor6ngthroughboxesanddrawers,leafingthroughnotebooksandfiles,andexaminingoldfieldinstruments.

Theen6reteampar6cipatedinthecatalogingofhundredsofstoredanddisplayedsoilmonolithsandlong-forgoZenpedologyfieldtournotesandphotographs.Dr.AndersonloggedeverythinginadatabasethatprovidesadetailedinventoryofAAFCmaterialrelatedtothehistoryofsoilscienceinCanada.

Dr.Andersonalsohad6metorecordanoralhistorywithre6redsoilscien6stDr.CharlesTarnocai,whoseYukonfieldnoteswerere-discoveredbyDr.Andersoninastorageshed.Dr.AndersonwroteabouthisworkforIngenium,thena6onalmuseumcorpora6onIworkfor,andalsoincorporatedsomematerialsintoQueen’sUniversitycoursethathetaughtinthewinterof2019.

Lookingahead,ourteamisalsogoingtofocusonamorecri6calhistoricalviewofsoilscienceanditsepistemologyinCanada.WithsupportfromarecentSSHRCgrantawardledbyDr.Greer,andwithNipissingandDokisFirstNa6onsasessen6alpartners,wewillexploretheroleofcolonialisminthehistoryofsoilscience,whichwasso6ghtlylinkedtosoilmappingandestablishingproduc6onseZleragricultureandthetakingofland(e.g.inNortheasternOntario,breakingtheRobinsonHurontreaty).LedbyourIndigenousresearchpartners,wewillseeifsoilmonolithcollec6onscouldbeusedinwaysthatbeZerrespectholis6cconnec6onstotheearthmovingforward.

UsingLivingLaboratoryapproachtodevelopandtransferinnova:vesoilandwaterqualityBMPsinPrinceEdwardIsland

Arablecropproduc6oniscentraltotheeconomyinPrinceEdwardIsland(PEI),whereover40%ofthelandmassisdedicatedtoagriculturalproduc6onwithpotatobeingthemaincashcrop.Intensivefarmingiscarriedoutonshallowsoilsinrollinglandscapeswhereextremeprecipita6oneventsarefrequent.Theresultisahighriskoflossoffer6lesoil,andcontamina6onofreceivingwaterswithnutrients,pes6cides,andsediments.Thesoildegrada6onassociatedwithlossofsoilandnutrientsanddecliningsoilorganicmaZerhasbeeniden6fiedasakeyfactorlimi6ngproduc6vityandeconomicsustainability.Theloadingofnutrients,pes6cidesandsedimentstoreceivingwaterscompromisesgroundwaterquality,contributestoanoxiceventsinreceivingestuaries,fishkills,anddevaluestheecologicalgoodsandservicesprovidedbyagriculture.Thereisthereforeanurgentneedtoacceleratetheadop6onofBeneficialManagementPrac6ces(BMPs)andnewtoolstomi6gatethesoilandwaterqualityissuesinPEI.Inresponse,AAFCproposesusingtheLivingLaboratoryapproachthatbringsfarmers,scien6stsandotherpartnerstogethertoconductresearchintheagriculturallandscapeandco-develop,test,monitorandimplementBMPstoenhancesoilhealthandwaterqualityinPEI.UnderthisnewLivingLaboratoryini6a6ve,about13BMPs,includingplan6ngcovercrops,implemen6ngreduced6llage,reducingnitrogeninputtopotatocropsbyadequatelyaccoun6ngnitrogensuppliesfromgreenmanureandsoilorganicmaZer,implemen6ngsupplementalirriga6onwherewaterisavailable,andadop6ngpes6cidereduc6onprac6ces,wereco-iden6fiedtotestanddemonstrate.Ateamofover70par6cipantsincludingscien6stsfromAAFC,DFO,ECCC,academiaandprofessionalsfromtheProvince,andfourNGOsandtheirassociatedfarmerswithcomplementaryexper6seandcapaci6eswasformedtoconducttheproject.Thisprojectnotonlyincludesstrongintegratedscien6ficprogramsbutalsoincludessocio-economicassessmentandknowledgeandtechnologytransferac6vi6es.AAFCCharloZetownResearchandDevelopmentCentreisleadingtheresearchcomplementedwithanexternalproposalledbythePEIEastPrinceAgri-EnvironmentAssocia6on(EPAEA,incl.13potatofarmers).Theprojectwillbeconductedfromspring2019tospring2030with$3.5millionbudgetallocatedtotheAAFC-ledproposaland$2.4millionallocatedtotheEPAEA-ledproposal.Theac6veengagementofscien6sts/professionalsfromAAFC,DFO,ECCC,AcademiaandtheProvinceandthelocalfarmingcommunityprovidesanunprecedentedopportunitytolinktheBMPswithsoilhealth,cropproduc6vityandreceivingwaterqualityandassociatedaqua6cecosystemhealth.Thelong-termgoalwillbetobuildagriculturalresiliencyandenhancetheecologicalgoodsandservicesprovidedbytheagriculturesectorandpreservethesociallicenceofagricultureinPEI.

CSSS Introductory Soil Science Textbook Call for Chapter Proposals

TheCSSSIntroductorySoilScienceTextbookprojectisunderwaywitheight“core”chaptersalreadyintheworks(Introduc6on,SoilGenesis,SoilOrganicMaZer,SoilWater/Physics,SoilChemicalProper6es,SoilBiodiversity,SoilNutrientCycling,SoilClassifica6on).Thesecorechapterswillcoverthesoilscienceessen6als,butwewantourCSSStextbooktogobeyondthesecoreessen6als,andreallyhighlightandpromotethewiderangeoftopicsthatwerecognizeas“soilscience”.Weareaskingyou,theCSSSmembership,tothinkbacktoyouruniversityyearsandconsiderwhatexcitedyouaboutsoilscience.Maybeyouwouldliketoshareanareaofsoilscienceforwhichyouhaveagrowingpassionorexper6se.Maybeyouarepursuingapar6cularareaofresearchthatyouareexcitedtosharewithsoilsciencestudentsacrossCanada.Thesky(orshouldIsaythesoilbeneathyourfeet)isthelimit.Perhapsyouwouldliketocontributeachapteronfieldmethods,ortheconnec6onbetweensoilhealthandhumanhealth,ordigitalmapping,ortheculturalecosystemservicessoilsprovide.Interested?Allproposalsarewelcome,butpleasesendthembyMay31,2019.PleasecontactFranWalleyfran.walley@[email protected]

Retirement Announcement | Dr. Brian McConkeyDr.BrianMcConkeyre6redasaResearchScien6stfromAgricultureandAgri-FoodCanada(AAFC)onJanuary25,2019.Dr.McConkeycompletedhisBScandMScinAgriculturalEngineeringattheUniversityofManitobaandtheUniversityofAlberta,respec6vely,andhisPhDinSoilScienceatWashingtonStateUniversity.Dr.McConkeyjoinedAAFCinJanuary,1986andworkedattheSwiiCurrentResearchandDevelopmentCentrethroughouthiscareer.From2010to2014,hewastheSeniorAdvisor,Agri-EnvironmentalServicesBranch/ScienceandTechnologyBranchatAAFC-SwiiCurrent.HereturnedasResearchScien6stin2014un6lhisre6rement.Hehaspublished169peer-reviewedpapersininterna6onallyrecognized

journals,andco-authored28bookchapters.Heservedon3PhDand9MScgraduatestudentcommiZees,andsupervised/co-supervised10youngscien6sts.

Dr.McConkeyhasmademajorprogressonimprovingmethodologiestoassesstheenvironmentalsustainabilityandimpactofagriculture.Someofhismethodologicaldevelopmentissummarybindingguidanceforcountriestouse,whilemostcoversinnova6vespecificscien6ficimprovementstodataanalysis,measurementstrategies,newmodels,andmethodselec6onandapplica6on.Hisresearchhascontributedtoscien6ficadvancementsinunderstandingandquan6fyingtheeffectofagriculturalprac6cesonsoilcarbonandsoilerosion,spanningthefullrangeofscalesfromglobaltosite-specific.Inaddi6on,Dr.McConkeyhasmadeimportantcontribu6onstoourunderstandingandquan6fica6onofagroecosystemfunc6onincludinganalysisofvegeta6on-soil-energystatus,andgreenhousegasemissions,aswellasonissuesregardingtheadapta6onoftheCanadianagriculturalsectortoglobalchangeinvolvingclimatechangeand/ornewbioenergysystems.HealsocontributedtoabeZerunderstandingofwaterregimeontheCanadianprairies.
