CUBISM1908-1914
Break it down….
• Inspired by Cezanne, but founded and lead by Picasso and Braque … “nothing but little cubes” . Started with Picasso’s “Les Desmoiselle d’Avignon”
• Subject varied, but color palette was limited to neutrals. ( Though Picasso broke a part and create his signature style that contained many colors)
• ANALYTICAL analyzing form of objects by shattering them into fragments spread out on the canvas
• SYNTHETIC reassemble the structure– formed new art of collage ( so Matisse wasn’t the first to do it!)
Example of Analytic
Picasso “ Portrait of
Voullard” 1910
Analytic.George Braque
Synthetic Example. Picasso “Guitar”
Picasso “ Three Musicians” 1921
Picasso
• Learned to draw before he could walk- he was first an Academia artist.
• “ It took me four years to paint like Raphael, but a lifetime to draw like a child”
• Different periods of his life influenced his art, until he changed art history with one painting ( the same painting the start of Cubism)
• “I paint what I know, not what I see”– inspired by Cezanne geometric patterns ( mountain side landscapes)
