Jonathan Culler, Class of 1916 Professor of English and Comparative Literature at Cornell University,has written extensively about structuralist poetics, critical theory and lyric poetry. His booksinclude Flaubert: The Uses of Uncertainty, Structuralist Poetics: Structuralism, Linguistics and theStudy of Literature and Literary Theory: A Very Short Introduction. In this lecture, Culler expandsthe discussion of poetics developed in his most recent book, Theory of the Lyric, to address thepossibilities and potential disadvantages that are opened up by bringing narrative theory to thestudy of the lyric.
