CSE Diary for 16.01.2013
The bourse broke-off 7 days of stagnation during the days trading as the
benchmark index followed a linear trend upwards as it crossed the 5,800
mark for the first time since October 2012. The index touched a high of
5,832.8 (+83 points), before closing the day with a 62.2 point advance at
5,812.5 points (the highest single day advance in 5 weeks) amidst notable
across the board buying interest. The heavyweights, Sri Lanka Telecom,
Ceylon Tobacco, Carsons Cumberbatch and Chevron Lubricants weighed
on the index positively. The S&P SL20 also traded on a similar pattern yet
securing a lesser 28.9 points gain to close at 3,163.2 points. The turnover was
supported by large on-board deals in selected counters as it recordedLKR636.3 mn.
We welcome todays market rally with fundamentally backed players being
at the center stage amidst improved market sentiments across the board.
Notably some re-activation of retailors were witnessed which we believe
need further momentum for the bourse to sustain gains whilst supporting
overall participatory levels. The continued drop in government yields has
started to gradually reflect on equities which we expect to elevate further
as the market interest rates would follow the declining trend over the short
term, hence further enhancing the attractiveness of the equities. On the
backdrop we expect the local retail investor participation to gather
considerable momentum within next few months. Hence, we advise the
value seekers to fasten up accumulation in the steady players with
increased cash allocation as we expect the market to generate attractive
returns particularly with the reversal of rising interest rate environment.
Heavyweight, John Keells Holdings, extended buying interest spearheading
the days turnover as the counter recorded the days only crossing carrying
225k shares at LKR225.0. Several large deals were also drawn on-board in
the counter including a 150k share block as it closed with a marginal price
gain at LKR225.0. Substantial investor activity was notable in Softlogic
Holdings as the counter recorded several on-board trades as it touched a
high of LKR13.2, before closing at LKR13.0 with a staggering 11.1% advance.
Ceylon Tobacco continued to renew its 52-week high price amidst buying
interest touching LKR950.0 today where the counter closed with a 2.8% gain
at LKR899.4. Buying interest was also notable in banking & finance sector
counters; Hatton National Bank(-0.3%), Commercial Bank of Ceylon (+0.0%),
Peoples Leasing & Finance (+4.2%), Nations Trust Bank (+2.7%) and DFCC
Bank (+1.3%). Further Chevron Lubricants and Asiri Hospital Holdings both
renewed their 52-week high prices at LKR227.0 & LKR12.2 respectively. Large
on-board deals continued in Dialog Axiata whilst Sri Lanka Telecom alsograbbed considerable attention.
Europe Stocks Fall as World Bank Cuts Global Forecasts : European stocks
declined for a fifth day as the World Bank downgraded global growth
forecasts and Jean-Claude Juncker, who heads the euro group of finance
ministers, said the strength of the euro currency threatens the regions
economy. US futures and Asian shares fell. The Stoxx 600 retreated 0.3% to
285.06 at 10:06 a.m. in London, for its longest losing streak since May.Oil Trades Near One-Week Low as US Crude Inventories Increase: Oil traded
near the lowest level in almost a week in New York after US crude stockpiles
increased and the World Bank cut its economic growth forecasts. Crude for
February delivery was at USD93.22 a barrel, down 6 cents, in electronic

More apparel orders to India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka: Pakistan had to slow down on its high qualityapparel exports, maybe due to the high quality apparel exports in Sri Lanka. According to foreign reports,
with the power and energy expenses increasing alarmingly in Pakistan, apparel importers are looking
towards Sri Lanka, India and Bangladesh for their future export orders. According to reports, Pakistan had
not been able to make ends meet with their export orders which had left European importers in an awkward
position. According to reports, 15% to 20% of the orders received to Pakistan had been diverted to Sri Lanka,
India and Bangladesh. The difficulties Pakistan is facing at present was widely known and it may definitely
create complications, that in turn would be beneficial to its neighbours. Commenting on European interests
in Sri Lankan apparel, Cooray said that it was no surprise as Sri Lanka had been a continual supplier evenduring the war. Sri Lanka has been a reliable all time supplier of apparel products and has been famous for
its high quality standards.

World economy to grow at staggering 3.3 %, Asia to take centre stage: Sri Lanka's IMF ResidentRepresentative Dr Koshy Matai said the outlook of the world economy was not looking that good. We
expect the world economy to grow by 3.3 % this year and at a rate of 3.6 % next year, he said. He however

We have seen growth rates of 7 to 8 %, even up to 9 % in certain Asian countries which has really driven
global growth. It is not how it was 10 or 20 years ago,he said. With regard to the world economic outlook,he said it had not been good for a while and remained weak. The situation in Europe has been very weak and
many countries had endured a very weak fiscal situation.

Rupee slips on importer dollar demand: The Sri Lankan rupee edged down yesterday due to importer dollardemand, but currency dealers said foreign inflows into government securities could boost the currency in
the near term. The rupee closed at 126.50/60 to the dollar from Fridays close of 126. 25/26, traders said.
We still see foreign inflows into T-bonds and bills, a currency dealer said on condition of anonymity. We
might have a problem in the exchange rate if foreign investors start to withdraw massive amounts in short
period.

World Bank Cuts Growth Forecasts as Developed Nations Lose Steam: The World Bank cut its global growthforecast for this year as austerity measures, high unemployment and low business confidence weigh on
economies in developed nations. The Washington-based bank projects the world economy will expand 2.4%,
down from a June forecast of 3%, after growing 2.3% in 2012. It halved its forecast for Japan, cut the U.S.
projection by 0.5% and predicted a second year of contraction in the euro region. It also lowered projections
for emerging markets led by Brazil, India and Mexico. Overall, the global economic environment remains
fragile and prone to further disappointment, although the balance of risks is now less skewed to the
downside than it has been in recent years, the World Bank said in its twice-yearly report.

Commerce data released in Beijing today. For the full year, inflows fell 3.7% to USD111.7 bn, while Chinas
non-financial investment abroad increased 28.6% to USD77.2 bn. China is gradually losing its advantages as a
destination for workshops and plants as land and labor costs rise, while deploying some of its USD3.3 trillion
in foreign-exchange reserves in growth opportunities abroad.

Euro Exchange Rate Is Dangerously High, Juncker Says: The euros 8.4% gain against the US dollar in thepast six months is posing a fresh threat to the European economy just as it shows signs of escaping the debt
crisis, said Jean-Claude Juncker, who leads the group of euro-area finance ministers. Echoing policy makers
from Switzerland to Japan in bemoaning strong exchange rates, Juncker late yesterday called the euros
value dangerously highafter the 17-nation currency this week traded above USD1.34 against the dollar for
the first time since February last year. The euro has rallied amid growing signs in financial markets that thethree-year debt turmoil is fading and after European Central Bank President Mario Draghi last week signaled
no immediate plan to ease monetary policy further.
