Coral Sea charm

Coral Sea Charters deckie Josh Muller with a big hump-headed Maori Wrasse picked up on a Shimano Butterfly jig. Just goes toshow you can catch anything on a heavy metal jigged down deep! Picture: PETER ZERONI

By PETER ZERONI

RECENTLY I was fortunateenough to be aboard the Cor-al Sea Charter Company’sflag ship, the Elizabeth E II.She is a massive 108ft inlength, exudes old-worldcharm and class, and each ofher cabins even boasts itsown en-suite.

Add in the five-star foodand service, and you’re in aleague few can match.

On this trip we were target-ing an area of the Great Bar-rier Reef in the Coral Sea lo-cated approximately 200kmdue east of Thursday Island. The species list encounteredduring our seven-day voyageincluded big coral trout,Maori sea perch, a variety ofemperors, job fish, red bass, assorted cods and trevallyspecies, as well as Spanishand shark mackerel.

Not only were the speciesnumerous, but the size of fishlanded was pretty mind blow-ing for a Darwinian, with

coral trout to 13kg and somethumper hump-headedMaori wrasse.

All up we landed 31 differ-ent species, with the major-ity caught on baits.

However, in between fulfil-ling my role as a rovingphotographer, I did manageto break out the jig gear andgot stuck into some exoticfish — many of which I hadnever caught before.

Late each day I also press-ganged the two hard-workingdeckies aboard into field test-ing some new metal jigs.

They jumped at the chanceand landed some fantasticfish on assist-hook riggedHalco Twistys, Shimano But-terfly jigs and big knife jigsfrom NT’s own Reidy’s.

Suffice to say they are nowjigging converts.

If you ever get a chance to

fish the outer Great Barrier

Reef, grab itwith twohands and

hang on tight. For further in-
