World Renowned
Chef, Jean-Georges Vongerichten
By David Miskit
Jean-Georges Vongerichten is one of the world’s most renowned chefs with a constellation of
restaurants all earning three and four star accolades.
According to a post created for Vongerichten’s website, his influences are rooted in his travel.
Although he was born and raised just outside Strasborg in Alsace, France, his training didn’t
truly begin until he traveled to Auberge de l’Ila work-study program.
There he served as apprentice to Chef Paul Haeberlin. Vongerichten continued to travel and
study, accumulating a variety of influences.
He worked under Paul Bocuse and Master Chef Louis Outhier at L’Oasis, the three star Michelin
restaurant located in southern France.
However, it was his experiences after leaving France that truly began to influence his particular cooking style.
He left to travel through Asia to continue his training, in the process working at the Oriental
Hotel in Bangkok, the Meridien Hotel in Singapore and the Mandarin Hotel in Hong Kong.
In this time, Vongerichten developed a love for the exotic and aromatic flavors of the East,
focusing on an infusion of vegetable juices, fruit essences, light broths, and herbal vinaigrettes in
his style.
These influences have created a very unique style that has earned Vongerichten a reputation
as one of the world’s top chefs.
He has opened many restaurants, where he is involved in concept, menu, architectural design,
staff selection and trainings.
