CATEGORY UPGRADING FORM
The following instructions are applicable strictly to Elementary Teachers (members of TECT) and Secondary Teachers (members of (TSU). If you have taken additional courses during the summer or are in the process of taking additional courses this school year and will be completed within this school year, and are also in the process of obtaining an evaluation from QECO, please read carefully the following instructions as to how to apply for a salary adjustment. INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Please print and complete TWO (2) copies of the attached category upgrading form. 2. Please send ONE (1) copy of the category upgrading form via your school
Courier, regular mail, or FAX TO Human Resources, Attention: Elementary Teachers FAX 416-512-3047 or Secondary Teachers FAX 416-512-3048.
3. Retain ONE (1) copy of the category upgrading form for your files, when you have received the Statement of Evaluation from QECO and the explanatory letter, please send copies of these documents together with the category upgrading form via your school courier, regular mail, or FAX to Human Resources, Attention: Elementary Teachers FAX 416-512-3047
or Secondary Teachers FAX 416-512-3048.
NOTE: PLEASE READ CAREFULLY THE DEADLINE DATES ON THE ATTACHED CATEGORY UPGRADE FORM. The category upgrading form must be received in Human Resources by no later than November 30, 2007 in order to receive a retroactive adjustment to your salary to September 1, 2007. To qualify for a retroactive salary adjustment, the QECO statements must be received in Human Resources by no later than March 1, 2008. NO EXTENSIONS WILL BE GRANTED IF RECEIVED AFTER THE INDICATED DEADLINE DATES.

2007/08: TCDSB ECOSCHOOL CERTIFICATION!
The EcoSchool team is getting ready to send out the first edition of the TCDSB EcoSchool Certification binder next week. We have the 12 certified schools from last year back on board, and presently have 21
new schools that have committed to trying to become EcoSchool certified. And it seems as though
we are getting more requests each week. It’s not too late to sign up, but you will need to get
an EcoTeam organized with staff and students involved.

“WATTS”UP? CORNER. Hopefully everyone has had a month to adjust to the computer shut-down, and have become used to their computers being off when they arrive each morning. Early figures suggest that approximately 6000-7000 computers are being shut-down each night. As a reminder the shut-down time is 8:00 p.m. Thank you for your participation and continued support. This is making a significant impact by reducing our energy consumption, operating costs, and most importantly a large Greenhouse Gas reduction, which means a smaller TCDSB EcoFootprint! OCTOBER EDITION: Get Out and Environmentally Active this Fall!
The Energy Drill is Continuing - Last year, four schools participated in this Ontario Power Authority (OPA) funded energy conservation initiative. The results were terrific. The program is hopefully going to be expanded, and perhaps additional schools can be added. The Energy Stewardship Program is looking for volunteer schools to reduce their energy consumption. 3Rs Recap: Waste Reduction Week Oct 15-21: All Schools will be receiving a package from the Recycling Council of Ontario (RCO) in the 1st week of October. It’s up to you to get involved! City of Toronto Parks Clean-up Oct 15 – Nov 2: All schools are encouraged to sign-up for a fall Parks Clean-up. Please complete the attached form to participate. Ministry of Ontario 3Rs Inspectors are Coming! Your school could be visited by an Ontario Ministry of the Environment inspector to ensure that you are meeting the 3Rs requirements. HUMAN RIGHTS & RACE RELATIONS CENTRE 2007 ESSAY COMPETITION
First Prize of $500 Two Second Prizes of $100
The Human Rights and Race Relations Centre in partnership with the Toronto Catholic District School Board and Toronto District School Board presents the Annul Essay Competition on the subject of Racism and Bullying in schools. The major sponsors for this year’s project are CTV Globe Media and Eli Lilly Canada. Cash Prizes are given at the special Awards Ceremony held on March 25, 2008 within the City of Toronto. This Essay Competition is designed to challenge young Canadians to develop ideas to eliminate Racism and Bullying in schools. This year’s topic is: “ WHAT PROGRAMMES DO STUDENTS FEEL NECESSARY FOR SCHOOLS TO ADDRESS RACIAL DISCRIMINATION AND BULLYING ” The essay should not exceed 500 words and the competition is open to all students (ages 6 to 19 years) within the Toronto Catholic District School Board and Toronto District School Board. Please confine your essay to the topic and for further information, kindly consult the Human Rights and Race Relations Centre’s website www.hrrrc.ca (click on essay contest) for terms and conditions. The outstanding entry will be awarded a cash prize of $500. In case of more than one winner in the same category, the prize will be equally divided. There will be TWO second prizes of $100 each. One prize is reserved for students from grades 2 to 6. Each entry MUST give the following information in a covering letter: 1. Name of the student. (If an immigrant, state country of origin). 2. Grade, Age and Gender. 3. Name of the School (full address with postal code, telephone and fax numbers AND E MAIL ADDRESS to facilitate notification of names of the winners) 4. Names of the student's teacher and school principal.
(A cover sheet with the above information must be attached to each essay to facilitate identification)

Award of Excellence The Canadian Race Relations Foundation (CRRF) Award of Excellence recognizes public, private or voluntary organizations whose efforts represent excellence and innovation in combating racism in Canada. A minimum of $20,000 in cash prizes and awards are available for the winners of this initiative. The Award of Excellence initiative to recognize Best Practices is part of an exciting educational program sponsored by the CRRF. All the winners will take part in a learning symposium where they will share their success with participants at a national conference. The symposium and awards ceremony will take place in Calgary, in 2008. Purpose ♦ To celebrate achievement in the struggle against racism in Canada. ♦ To acknowledge best practices and excellence in the field of anti-racism. ♦ To collect/share information and materials aimed at the elimination of racism. ♦ To establish partnerships and networks with a broad range of public, private and voluntary organizations. ♦ To further the Foundation’s mission to eliminate racism in Canada. Eligibility: Organizations based in Canada from the voluntary, private, or public sectors are eligible. Winners of a previous Award of Excellence or Award of Distinction (2005) are ineligible to apply. Only one best practice per group can be submitted. Nominations: Applications may be submitted by the organization or youth group responsible for the initiative, or by a third party nominee. Adjudication & Submissions: An Awards Jury, appointed by the Foundation, will review the submissions. The award finalists will be notified, following the decision of the Awards Jury. The decisions of the Awards Jury are final. The submission consists of the completed Nomination Form, a Best Practice Report and two support letters. This submission (one hard copy; 5 duplicates on cd-rom) must arrive at the CRRF office by no later than Friday, January 14, 2008. The submissions become the property of the Canadian Race Relations Foundation and may be publicized as part of the CRRF Best Practices program. There are six categories in the Award of Excellence. Chief Inspector Jacques Clouseau, the world’s most unusual criminologist, fights for his life and the future of all mankind in this hilarious caper. Deadly assassins and a beautiful Russian agent are all part of the action as Paul Dreyfus, once Clouseau’s boss and now a raving lunatic, holds the world hostage with the ultimate weapon, the Doomsday Machine. Time is running out. Can Clouseau save the world? There are 40 characters in the play, as well as opportunities to work behind the scenes. St John's School Fair SNAP Beaches 2007 October St. John’s Catholic School in East Toronto invited families to share in the fun at the school’s annual fall fair. There was excitement for kids of all ages with a variety of games and activities including, an obstacle course, bouncy castle, dunk tank, children’s craft and jewellery making, face painting and much more. Side events were ongoing as well, with the basket raffle, cake
walk contests, bake sale, and tea room.

Student Artwork Enhances New Book Exploring Spiritual Themes His Grace, Archbishop Thomas Collins was a special guest at the launch of “Becoming a Child…..while thinking about God!” at St. Marcellus Catholic School September 27th. The book--a collaborative effort by Fr. Gianni Carparelli and the students and staff of the school--is directed at both adults and children in an effort to explain the significance of God in their lives. Also in attendance were TCDSB Director of Education Kevin Kobus and Superintendent Paul Crawford.
Written in simplistic, everyday language, and enhanced by student artwork, the book tackles common questions that children encounter while grappling with the notion of God, such as “Who is Jesus?” and “Why should I pray?” “Becoming a Child” is designed to support the Religion and Family Life program of the Toronto Catholic District School Board by focusing on three major topics for three different age groups: the experience of friendship and communion

SUBJECT: 10-5 St. Jude’s part of a Historic Unveiling of Maple Leaf at Emery Village On Wednesday September 19th, 2007 grade 4 to 8 students along with staff proudly represented St. Jude’s School in a historical community unveiling of the Maple Leaf at the intersection of Weston Road and Sheppard Avenue. All participants were treated to a barbeque and refreshments hosted by Councillor Mammoliti.
Some in attendance included Trustee Piccininni, Councilor Carrol, and our very own Mayor Miller. A proud day for the St. Jude’s community.

THE BRYAN BONSER MEMORIAL VOLLEYBALL TOURNAMENT
for school senior girls’ volleyball teams
Bryan Bonser, former teacher for the TCDSB, most recently at St. Martin de Porres, dedicated much of his life to education and a great deal of time developing the skills of young volleyball players. He supported the S’Port for Kids Foundation, a registered national charitable organization, which works with youth aged six to 18 years. James K. Bartleman, former Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, said of this organization: “In every community there are children and youth who are eager to participate in organized sports. The costs involved sometimes limit their opportunities, and that is why S’port for Kids has stepped in to fill this need. By raising funds to support less fortunate individuals and teams, the Foundation gives them a chance to learn the value of teamwork and to realize their potential through amateur sport.” The Bryan Bonser Memorial Volleyball Tournament was established to both remember Bryan for his contributions to sport in the TCDSB, but also to assist the cause which he supported over the years. ALL PROFITS FROM THE TOURNAMENT WILL GO TO S’PORT FOR KIDS to help them carry on their work. Dates: October 24 (preliminaries) October 25 (finals) Times: 3:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. (approx.) Working Together to Educate All Attention Teachers of Learning Disability Programs
UPDATE ON LEARNING DISABILITIES A course consisting of four full-day sessions will be offered to TCDSB teachers of Learning Disability Programs and Special Education teachers who work extensively with students with learning disabilities.
