Which one tells us more about Jessie? Number 1 or 2? Why?
Read the following paragraph carefully.
MY FRIEND MARILYN
My best friend Marilyn is a very nice girl whom I have known
for ten years. One of the reasons why I like her so much is
that she has such a nice appearance. She has beautiful, long,
curly hair and she has a nice haircut, too. Her big blue eyes are like the deep
ocean. With her physical appearance, she looks like a movie star. Also, the
freckles on her face make her so cute. They remind me of my aunt who passed
away a few years ago. Secondly, I like her character a lot. She is a fair-minded
person who treats everyone with equal respect. Furthermore, she is very calm
and she can keep her temper in the most difficult situations. Lastly, she has
some interesting hobbies and interests. She spends a lot of time working in the
garden. She really likes planting different kinds of flowers or plants. In addition
to this, she is fond of travelling. Although she is so young, she has already
visited ten countries so far and she likes bringing souvenirs from these
countries. As you can see, there are so many reasons why I like her so much. I
hope we will be friends forever.

Then organise your planning into a structured piece of writing such as this:
My Best Friend
My best friend is one of my schoolmates. His name is Mark and we have known each
other since we were six years old. Mark has short brown hair, green almond-shaped
eyes, a small nose and freckles on his cheeks. He is one of the tallest boys in our
class. Mark likes to wear casual clothes and when he comes over to my house he
looks very comfortable in a pair of jeans and a T-shirt or sweater.
It seems like Mark and I are always talking or laughing about something. He has a
very nice personality and a wonderful sense of humour. We have very similar
hobbies. We both enjoy playing football and support England. Sometimes, during
Summer, I go with Mark and his family to the beach where we spend most of the
day swimming and building large sandcastles.
I can’t imagine going to school and not having Mark there. We are lucky that we
have each other and that we get along so well. I hope that our friendship will
continue to be just as strong as we grow older.
Now it’s your turn to
write about your best
friend! Don’t forget to
plan your writing first.
Let’s discuss!
Do you think that this description is detailed enough? Would you have added
something else? Did you want to know something more about Mark? Could the
writer have added some similes?

Describing a Setting
My Bedroom
My room is situated on the second floor of our house. It is the smallest of our
three bedrooms. I share my room with my younger brother who keeps his side
rather untidy. I like to keep my side of the room clean and uncluttered. All
the furniture is made of pinewood. There is a large wardrobe and a chest of
drawers with all our clothes. I have interesting books and trophies on the
shelves over my bed and I enjoy reading in my cosy bed before I sleep. I have
a lovely view of the garden from my bedroom window and every morning the
sun shines into the room making it glow with warmth.

Checklist
Good job!
Oops!!
I have identified the right word to
help me write the acrostic poem
and made sure it is spelled
correctly.
The word is written vertically and
in capital letters.
My poem describes well what I
wanted to say.
I have made the right use of the
necessary punctuation marks and
left spaces between words.
Acrostics are a fun poetic form that anyone can write. They have just a few
simple rules.
You just have to follow these five easy steps:
1. Decide what to write about.
2. Write your word down vertically.
3. Brainstorm words or phrases that describe your idea.
4. Place your brainstormed words or phrases on the lines that begin with the same
letters.
5. Fill in the rest of the lines to create a poem.

Writing a Friendly or Personal Letter
It’s fun to write and receive letters!
Take a look at the parts of a letter, then write your own!
De La Salle College©
~ 52 ~
HEADING 1. Begin your letter by writing your address in the top right-
hand corner of the page. This is important in case your return
address (on the back of the envelope) is torn, or the envelope
is thrown out. This way the person who receives the letter will
always have your address and will be able to reply to you.
Write the date just under the address.
GREETING The greeting usually starts with 'Dear' and is followed by the
person's name and then a comma. In an informal friendly
letter you can also start with ‘Hi’ or ‘Hello’.
BODY After skipping a line, you begin the body of your letter which
is the main text of your letter.
CLOSING The closing includes a short capitalized expression such as
'Sincerely' or 'Love' and is followed by a comma. Skip a line
after the body before writing your closing.
SIGNATURE You sign your name beginning directly below the closing.
POSTSCRIPT Sometimes you may add a postscript at the end of your letter.
You write P.S., add a note and then end it with your initials.

Addressing an Envelope
Front: On the front of the envelope you are telling the postman
exactly where to take the letter.
Back: It is important to write your return address on the back of your envelope in
case the letter is accidentally delivered to the wrong address.
Address it right!

Your teacher is going to give you a paper with the name of a boy from a year 4
