PREFACE
This Defence Standard supersedes
DEF STAN 40-8 Issue 2dated 7 February 1983
i This Defence Standard summarises the test methods and general requirements for Cord,Lacing and Tape, Lacing including LFH variants for Ministry of Defence (MOD) use.
ii This Defence Standard has been prepared because there is no suitable British or CECCStandard acceptable to the MOD. When a suitable British or CECC Standard becomesavailable this Defence Standard will be amended to implement the British or CECC Standardfor MOD use.
iii This Standard has been agreed by the authorities concerned with its use and is intended tobe used whenever relevant in all future designs, contracts, orders etc and wheneverpracticable by amendment to those already in existence. If any difficulty arises whichprevents application of this Defence Standard, the Directorate of Standardization shall beinformed so that a remedy may be sought.
v Any enquiries regarding this Standard in relation to an invitation to tender or a contract inwhich it is incorporated are to be addressed to the responsible technical or supervisingauthority named in the invitation to tender or contract.
vi This Standard has been devised for the use of the Crown and its contractors in theexecution of contracts for the Crown. The Crown hereby excludes all liability (other than

a. A load of 6.75 kg shall beapplied gradually over a periodof 1 to 1 minutes andmaintained for 5 minutes
There shall be nobreakage.
(ii) Elongation The specimen shall be measuredwith the load still applied.
Elongation for each 150mm interval shall bewithin the followinglimits:1 mm nominal diameter
12 mm to 24 mm
(iii) Elasticity The load shall be removed andimmediately after an interval of oneminute the specimen shall bemeasured.
The variation from any150 mm interval shallnot exceed:6 mm for 1 mmnominal diameter.

8.3 KNOTTING For this test, a mandrel 6 mmnominal diameter is required. Themandrel shall be subjected to thedry heat and dry cold cycles withthe specimen. The method ofknotting is shown at Annex A.
(i) Temperature (dryheat)
The specimen and mandrel shall bemaintained at a temperature of35C-38C for 7 days. At the endof the period and while still at thistemperature, the specimen shall beknotted over the mandrel.
There shall be noindication of cracking orother deterioration.
(ii) Temperature (drycold)
The specimen shall be removedfrom the mandrel. The specimen
and mandrel shall then bemaintained at a temperature -5C to-8C for 6 hours.
At the end of the period and whilestill at this temperature thespecimen shall be knotted over themandrel.
There shall be noindication of cracking orother deterioration.

temperature of 85C for 7 days.
(i) Flexibility At the end of the period whilst atthe high temperature the cord shall
be closely wound three times undera tension of 0.5 kg on a 6 mmdiameter mandrel which has beenconditioned with the specimens. Asuitable method is described inAnnex B.
There shall be noindication of cracking orany other deterioration.

MANDREL BOX FOR FLEXIBILITY TESTS
FLEXIBILITY - TEST METHOD
The appropriate mandrel shall be mounted in an insulated box provided with a removable lidand a thermometer to indicate the temperature inside the box. The mandrel must be providedwith an external drive so that it can be rotated without opening the box. The test specimensupporting a 0.5 kg mass at its free end shall be attached to the mandrel. The box with its lidopen shall then be subjected to the appropriate test condition as specified in 8.4.1and 8.4.2.
At the end of the conditioning period the lid will be closed and the thermometer reading shallbe within 2C of the test temperature. While at this temperature, the mandrel is to berotated at approximately one revolution per second for three complete revolutions.

Removal of Product Qualification Approval
IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT
1. This Standard contains a Product Qualification Approval (PQA) scheme.iMOD policy requires that all
PQA schemes are removed from Defence Standards called up in contracts placed after 1stJanuary 1998.
2. Users of this Standard are to contact the Project Manager (PM), Equipment Support Manager (ESM) or
Technical Service Authority (TSA) named in the contract or order, to identify whether there is a continuing need
for an approvals scheme.
3.iiProduct Conformity Certification (PCC) is a risk based process that replaces PQA. Once a risk has been
identified PCC can be included as a contract clause. In exceptional circumstances agreement can be sought from
AD/Stan for PCC to be included in a Defence Standard.
4. At the next revision of this Standard the PQA scheme will be removed.

iDefence Council Instruction (General) 197/97; Quality Temporary Memorandum 5/98; Chief ofDefence Procurement Instruction CDPI/TECH/250 (draft)iiPCC is certification that a product meets its specification. When PC is required by the contract, the
contractor is responsible for obtaining the necessary PCC. Certification shall be provided from aNAMAS accredited laboratory when appropriate. PCC shall apply where a Risk Assessment has beenidentified by the PM; ESM or TSA.
