  • Chapter 5: Greyhawk — Tournament Adventures (1978-1980) WithanewAD&Drulesystemnowinplace,TSRwasreadytostartreleasingadventures—exceptthat’snotentirelytrue,asthemajorityoftheseadventurespredatedthecompletionofthetrilogyofAD&Drulebooks.And,TSRwasreadytosupportGaryGygax’sworldofGreyhawk—excepttheseadventuresweremostlyplacedinGreyhawkretroactively.

    But,historyisafunnything,andtheseearlytournamentadventuresarecertainlyrecognizedtodayasboththefirstAD&DadventuresandthefirstGreyhawkadventures.

    TheMaps.TheGiantsadventureshadincludedverytraditionalmapsofcaverns,dungeons,andhalls—exactlythesortofthingthatyou’dexpectinclassicD&Dmodules.Descentcontainsonesimilarmapdepictingalargecavernsystem,butitalsoincludessomeveryuniquemapsthatareunlikeanythingelseproducedforD&D,beforeorafter.Theyshowhowthedesignerswerestillexperimentingwithgraphicdesign,andhowthewholegamecouldhavegoneinverydifferentdirections.

    Thatbeginswitha“largescalemap”thatdepictsnearly2,000squaremilesofcavernsonahexgrid.It’saratherpeculiarhexmapbecauseitdoesn’tlabeltheindividualhexes,butinsteadmarksnumbersatthetopandbottomofthemapandlettersofftotheleft.(Theresultisprettyhardtoread.)ThismaplookslikeitshouldsupportthebiggestUnderdarkhexcrawlever,prefiguringwildernessadventureslikeX1:TheIsleofDread(1981).Instead,theencountersinDescentaremostlyconstrainedtojustfourofthosehexes.

    Howdoyouprovidetacticalmapsforsuchlarge-scaleadventuring?Descentoffersananswerforthattoo:itcontainsasetoffourgenericmapsoftunnelsandcavernsthatcouldbeusedinvariousorientationsforspecificencounters.ItwassortofareinventionofTSR’sDungeonGeomorphs(1976-1977),butonasmallerscale.

    I:MoreOriginsofTournaments.GenConD&DtournamentsdatedbacktoatleastGenConVIII(1975),whenRobKuntzran“SunkenCity”.However,themodernD&Dtournament,withafocusonsmallgroupsrunningthroughmultipleroundsofplay,wasinsteadinitiatedbyBobBlake,amemberofacentralIndianagaminggroupcalledtheValparaisoUniversityD&DSociety.Inhisfirsttournament,atGenConIX(1976),twentygroupsoffiveplayerscompeted.BlakealsoranthetournamentatGenConX(1977)andlatersawbothadventurespublishedbyJudgesGuildasGenConIXDungeon(1976,1978)andOfSkullsandScrapfaggotGreen(1977,1979).

    In1978,TSRwasplayingwiththeideaofpublishingtournamentstoo.ThatJulytheyranthethree-partgiantstournamentatOrigins’78(1978)andthenimmediatelyrecoupedtheircostsbyproducingthetournamentsasthe“G”Giantsadventures(1978).Itwasagreatmodel,andonethatTSRcouldeasilyrepeat.WithTSRalsobeingaskedtorunothertournaments,suchastheadventurethatbecameS4:TheLostCavernsofTsojcanth(1978)forWinterConV(1976),itwasclearlytotheirbenefittodovetailtheirideaofinstantlyavailabletournamentadventureswithBobBlake’sownGenConwork.

  • II:TheDescentTournaments.TheDescenttournamentsrepeatedTSR’spublicationtrickfromOrigins’78atGenConXI(1978).Blakeranamultipartdescent-into-the-earthtournament,thenTSRimmediatelyreleasedthreerelatedadventures:D1:DescentintotheDepthsoftheEarth(1978),D2:ShrineoftheKuo-Toa(1978),andD3:VaultoftheDrow(1978).

    Curiously,thefirstofthosepublishedadventures,Descent,wasn’tactuallyusedinthetournament!Instead,theroundsofthetournamentwereallbasedonthelattertwoadventures—entirelyexcludingthefirstmodule’sbridgetothegiantsadventuresanditsintroductionoftheundergroundrealms.

    III:TimeforAnotherBreak.SowheredidthenewDescentadventurescomefrom?GaryGygaxwrotethembecausehewas“sickofwritingAD&Drules”.Forhim,writingadventureswasa“relaxation”,thatwas“almostasfunasplaying”.TheworkonthedescentseriesbeganafterGygaxcompletedtheAD&DPlayersHandbook(1978)andbeforehestartedtheAD&DDungeonMastersGuide(1979)—whichoncemoremeantthattherulesfortheseadventuresweren’tactuallycompleted!

    IV:TheRestoftheCon.WhatelsewasgoingonatGenConXI?TheDragon#15(June1978)revealssomespecifics.TSRwaspushingGammaWorld(1978),whichhadbeenreleasedatOrigins,andthePlayersHandbook(1978),whichwasofficiallyreleasedthatGenCon.TherewasaDungeon!(1975)championshipaswellasbeginners’D&DeventsrunbyJ.EricHolmes.Theywerealsowargametournaments,showingtheoriginsofthehobby.

    DesignTrope:RailroadorSandbox?Withthathugehexmap,DescentcouldhavebeenTSR’sfirstbigsandboxadventure,allowingplayerstoexploreavastlocaleastheysawfit.Usingthelarge-scalemap,GMscouldhaverunyearsofadventuresintheUnderdark.Infact,Gygaxdidhavesomenotesforplacesthatdidn’tmaketheirwayintothedescentadventures.However,heneverfullydevelopedthembecausehisplayersweren’tthatinterestedindelvinginto“thedepthsoftheEarth”.

    Instead,Descentisabitofarailroad.TheplayersaredirecteddownasinglepathastheyfollowthefleeingdrowfromtheGiantsadventures.Iftheystayontrackthey’llhavetwosmallencounters(withdrowandmindflayers)thenonebigencounter(inalairruledbydrowandtroglodytes)overthecourseoftheadventure.Thattroglodytelairisaprettyclassiclocale-based(cavern)adventure,makingittheexceptiontoDescent’srailroad.

    World of Adventure

    IntroducingtheUnderdark.ThemosthistoricelementofDescentiscertainlythefactthatitintroducestheUnderdark,acivilizedlandbeneaththeEarth(Oerth).

    Sortof.

    TheUnderdarknameisn’tusedhere;thatinsteadoriginatesintheDungeoneer’sSurvivalGuide(1986).And,thelandsinthisfirstadventurearen’tthatcivilized:thetroglodytelaircouldjustaseasilyhavebeenacaveofchaos.

  • But,thepotentialisallhere,particularlyinthatlarge-scalemap.Itwouldblossominthenexttwoadventuresinthisseries.

    ExploringGreyhawk.DescentisaGreyhawkadventure,setdeepbeneaththesurface.Becauseofitsundergroundlocation,itdoesn’tofferverystrongtiestotherestofthesetting—thoughyearslaterChrisPramaswouldrefertothedrowoftheseadventureswhenhelinkedthemtoanotherdrowsocietyinwesternOerikaspartofthebackgroundfortheChainmailMiniaturesGame(2001).

    The Creature Compendium

    UnderdarkRaces.ThefamousmonstersoftheUnderdarkbegintogelinthisadventure,whichfeaturesbothdrowandmindflayers.Gygaxalsointroducesanewmonster,thejermlaine,whichheinventedasan“olderversion”ofthegremlin.Finally,DescentalsoincludesTSR’sfirstlichinanadventure:Asberdies,whohascast600magicmouthspellstoprotectthelocationofhistreasure.

    GameTropes:Tournaments,Scoring.BobBlakebelievedinobjectivelyscoringtournaments.InTheDragon#19(October1978),heexplainedsomeofthecriteriaheusedtoscoreShrine.Anyonewhopassedthroughtheshrine,pressingforwardinthehuntforthedrow,receivedpoints.However,themostpointswenttopartiesthatpursuedthe“perfect”path,whichappearstohaveinvolvedmovingnonviolentlythroughtheShrine.Pointswerealsoawardedforslayingkuo-toaandforsurvivingtheexperience.

    DesignTrope:GygaxianNaturalism.ShrineisamuchmoreimpressiveadventuringlocalethanthosepreviouslydetailedbyTSRandthat’sinlargepartduetoitsGygaxianNaturalism.Shrinedepictsanentiresocietyofkuo-toa,centeredaroundtheireponymousshrine.It’snotonlyamorecoherentandmaturelocationthanthesomewhatrandomcollectionofmonstersfoundinthetroglodytelairinDescent,butit’salsothefirstcompleteadventurefromTSRthatplayersmightnotjustfighttheirwaythrough—thoughthereweresomeminorexamplesintheGiantsadventures,whereplayersmighthavemadecommoncausewiththerebelliousorcsinG1:SteadingoftheHillGiantChief(1978)orwiththerivaldrowinG3:HalloftheFireGiantKing(1978).

    AlloftheseNaturalistideas—ofbuildingcivilizationsandcreatinglocalesthatcouldsupportmorethanjusthackingandslashing—wouldbecomeevenmoreimportantinD3:VaultoftheDrow(1978).

    DesignTrope:RailroadorSandbox?ShrineexactlymatchestheformatofD1:DescentintotheDepthsoftheEarth(1978):itrailroadsplayersthroughtwoshortencounters,thencontinuesontoamuchlongerlocale-basedadventurethattakesupthebulkofthebook.

    ExploringtheUnderdark.ShrineshowsthepotentialoftheprimordialUnderdarkbydepictinga(small)civilization.

    The Creature Compendium

    Kuo-Toa.Gygaxcreatedthekuo-toabecausehewantedanothernon-humanracefortheUnderdark,tocomplementthedrowandmindflayers.Hesayshemadethem“outofwholecloth”,whichprobablymeansthatanysimilaritytoH.P.Lovecraft’sdeeponeswasnotintentional.(AtTSR,RobKuntzwasthebigLovecraftfan,notGaryGygax.)TheywouldjointhedrowandtheminflayersfromDescentasastandardraceoftheUnderdark.

    Svirfneblin.Gygaxcreatedthesvirfneblin,or“deepgnomes”,becausehewastiredof“basicallygoodgnomeshangingaround”.Thesvirfneblinwereinsteadgnomesthatcould“giveapartysomemajorheadaches”.Theyalsoreferencedgnomes’classicdepictionasearthelementalsbecausetheyhadearthelementalsummoningabilitiesoftheirown.TheywouldbecomeanotherstandardUnderdarkrace.

    The Rogues Gallery

    Blibdoolpoolp.Forthefirsttimeever,D&Dplayersaregiventhechancetomeetagod:Blibdoolpoolp,theSeaMotherofthekuo-toa.Notably,GygaxincludesnostatsfortheSeaMother:PCsareunabletofighther,whichisquitedifferentfromthedirectionthatD&DwouldmovewiththereleaseofQ1:QueenoftheDemonwebPits(1980).

    Asforthestrangename:Gygaxsaysthatitwas“onomatopoeic”,meanttoremindplayersof“thesoundoflargedropsofwaterfallingintoapool,andsplashingingeneral”.

    I:Same‘Ole,Same‘Ole.TheoriginsofVaultmatchtherestofthedescentseries,whichwereallcreatedbyGaryGygax,runastournamentsatGenConXI(1978),andpromptlysoldasadventures.

    VaultwasusedasthebasisofthesecondandthirdroundsoftheGenConXItournament.Theexactdividingpointisn’tobvious,butitisknownthatthesecondroundofthetournamentresultedinTPKsforeveryonebutthewinningteamdueto“ahorribleencounterwithademon.”

    II:GettingHigh.GygaxranVaultaroundfourtimespriortothetournament:forhisLakeGenevagroupandforplaytesters.ThereactionofhisGenevagroup,whichnowincludedsomeTSRemployees,wasperhapsthemostamusing:they“tookonelookaroundandmadehastetogetaway”.

    Surprisingly,Vaultwasoneoffewhigh-leveladventuresthatGygaxeverran,demonstratinghowverydifferenthisintentwasfromhowD&Dwasbeingplayed.Gygaxsaid:“AllofmyplayersretiredtheirPCsfromgeneralplaywhenthosecharactersreachedthemid-teensinlevel.”

    III:TheMissingAdventures.Vaultreferencesthenextadventureinthisongoingsequence,“Q1:QueenoftheDemonwebPits”.Gygaxhadaplanforitbuthewouldneverwriteit.Instead,itwouldappeartwoyearslaterbyadifferentauthorandwithadifferentplot.

    Gygaxalsowouldhavelikedtowritemoreadventuresinthisarea.Hehopedtousethedrow“asvillainousantagonistsinmanyanadventureintothefastnessoftheUnderdark”andmanyyearslatersaidthatexpandingthedrowcityofErelhei-CinluwouldbeoneofhistopchoicesforareturntoD&D(withtheotherbeingrevealingwhatmightliebeneaththeTempleofElementalEvil).Sadly,noneofthiscametopass.

  • IV:TheFirstUpgrade.Afewyearsdowntheline,TSRwouldcompilethefirstfive“G”and“D”adventuresintoG1-2-3:AgainsttheGiants(1981)andD1-2:DescentintotheDepthsoftheEarth(1981).Vaultgotreprintedatthesametime,butitwasbigenoughthatnosuchcompilationwasnecessary!TheneweditionofVaultislargelyidenticaltotheoriginal,otherthansomeartworkchanges:thesacrificialcoverbyDaveSutherlandhasbeenreplacedbyanErolOtuspiecedepictingEclavdraEilservsandhertentaclerod.Additionalpieceswereaddedontheinteriorandbackcover.

    CityTropes:Infiltration.Afterfivevolumesofdungeon,hall,andcaverncrawls,Vaultofferedsomethingtotallydifferent(andtotallynewforD&D):theinfiltrationofacity.Certainly,thissortofinfiltrationwaspossibletoaminorextentinG1:SteadingoftheHillGiantChief(1978),butinVaultit’sprettymuchthewholestory.Theplayersmustsneakaroundanevilcity,investigateclues,andfigureoutwhattodowithin.AsGygaxsaid,itrequiredskillslike“big-timeroleplay”and“bribery”,“threat”,or“whatever”.

    DesignTropes:Sandbox.Moregenerally,Vaultisahugesandbox.There’snoindicationofwhatplayersshoulddooncetheygettothecity,andthishascausedquiteabitofconfusionamongplayersofthisadventure.Eclavdra,thequarryofthepreviousadventures,hasalmostnopresenceinthisone,andinsteadthefocusturnstothefoesofherhouseintheFaneofLolth—whichhasledagenerationofcasualreaderstobelievethatLolthwastheinstigatoroftheGiantsadventuresratherthanEclavdraandherElderElementalGod.

    Worlds of Adventure

    ExploringGreyhawk:Erelhei-Cinlu.TheadventureisanextensivedescriptionofthedrowcityofErelhei-Cinlu,hiddendeepbeneathGreyhawk.ItalsohintsatanadventureoutontotheSunlessSea.Sadly,thiswouldbenearlythelastappearanceoftheseevocativelocales,otherthanafewmagazineappearances:WolfgangBaurwouldrevealanothercivilizationupontheSunlessSeain“KingdomoftheGhouls”forDungeon#70(September/October,1998)whileErelhei-Cinluitselfwouldberevisitedin“VaultoftheDrow”byMonteCookforDragon#298(August,2002).

    Drow.Ofcourse,thedrowwerethebackgroundfoesintheGiantsadventures(1978)andstartingwithG3:HalloftheFireGiantKing(1978),theybecameamoreactiveforce,bedevilingtheplayersthroughoutthedescentadventures(1978)untiltheylandintheirhomecityofErelhei-Cinlu.Now,thenewdemihumanracefinallytakescenterstage.

    Sowheredidthedrowcomefrom?Gygaxapparentlyfoundtheword“drow”withadefinitionof“darkelf”insomebook.Backin1979,hecreditedeitherThomasKeightley’sFairyMythology(1828)orRobertKirk’sTheSecretCommonwealth(1691-1692,1815).Muchlater,hesaidthathefoundthewordinan“oldunexpurgateddictionary”.

    Theexactsourceremainsuncleartoday,asthewordwasnotactuallyinanywidespreaduse.ManyresearcherssuggestthatGygaxstumbledupontheword“trow”fromtheOrkney

  • andShetlandislands,whichdoesindeedhaveavariant“drow”anditselfisderivedfrom“troll”.However,ifthedrowaredrawnfromAnglo-Saxonlore,theycouldalternativelybedescendedfromtheSvartálfaheimr—thedarkelvesofNorsemythology.

    Whateverthesourceofthename,Gygaxthenproceededtocreatearaceofhisown,whofinallygetmoreextensivedetailsinVault:welearnthattheircityisarrangedintoHousesthatareatoddswitheachotherandalsodiscovertheimportanceofthespideryreligionofLolth.Andit’smademoreobviousthaneverthatthedrowareevil.Gygaxwouldlaterexpressamazementatthenumberofpeoplewhowantedtoplaydrow,sincehe’ddonehisbesttomakethemirredeemable—thoughheacknowledgedthatmaybeonly99%wereevil.Ironically,Gygaxwroteaboutanon-evildrowofhisown:Leda,intheGordtheRoguenovels(1985-1988),whowasacloneofEclavdra(!).

    ButthemostimportantquestionaboutthedrowwasleftunansweredinVault,andsoplayersspentthenextdecadearguingwhetherdrowshouldbepronouncedlike“bow”or“bough”.Fortunately,FrankMentzercompiledapronunciationguideinDragon#93(January1985)wherehesaid:“drow,ordro”.OK,maybethat’snotsohelpful.

    The Rogues Gallery

    EclavdraEilservs.TheplayerschaseEclavdraallthewaybacktoErelhei-Cinlu,andthenshelargelydisappearsintoherhouse’sestate.Attheleast,Vaultpresentsherwholestory:thatherhousetriedtobecomemonarchsinErelhei-Cinlu,causingthepriestessofLolthtoturnagainthem.Inturn,houseEilservsturnedtotheElderElementalGodandattemptedtomostlyhisworshiptoapuppetkingdomaboveground.Afterthisadventure,Eclavdralargelyappearedinnovels,startingwithGygax’sGordnovels.SheappropriatelymakesanappearanceintheAgainsttheGiantsnovel(1999),wheresheiskilled.

    ElderElementalGod.LikeEclavdra,theElderElementalGodlargelydisappearsinthisfinaldescentadventure.ThereisanotherEEGtemple,butit’sjustacopyoftheonefoundinHalloftheFireGiantKing.

    Withthatsaid,there’sonepuzzlerelatedtotheElderElementalGodthatisjustaboutinvisiblebecauseitwasneverexplained.ThewebofLolthcontainsfourstrangeitems:“anironpyramid,asilversphere,abronzestarofeightpoints,andacubeofpaleblue”.They’resaidtobeforQ1:QueenoftheDemonwebPitsandindeedbecometeleportationkeythere,butthatwasn’tGygax’soriginalintent.GygaxhasanothertryinT1-4:TheTempleofElementalEvil(1985)wherethefouriconsareexplicitlylinkedtotheelements:anearthpyramid,anaircircle,afierystar,andawatersquare.ItappearsthattheobjectsweremeanttofreetheElderElementalGodfromimprisonment—buttheywereneverusedforsuchineachQueenoftheDemonwebPitsorTheTempleofElementalEvil,probablyduetoGygax’slackoflateinvolvementineither.

    Lolth.Instead,wegetamajorappearancebyanewgod,Lolth.She’sintroducedasthemaingodofthedrow,andsomewhatsurprisingly,she’shangingaroundinthedungeonsunderErelhei-Cinlu.Assuch,she’sthefirstgod(oratleastdemonlord)thatD&Dplayerscouldofficiallykill(oratleastbanish).

  • Inlateryears,Lolthhasbeenverypopular,andtheElderElementalGodhasbeenallbutforgotten,soapparentlyEclavdra’splotreallydidn’tworkout.
